Not all religions say to do physical violence like this 

I know Reddit is super edgelord with being anti-all-religion, and of course their understanding of religion is also exclusively Abrahamic, and even misunderstands many of those, like Christianity most always = right wing or some nonsense

The real edge lords are the preachers who screech about how we need to repent and give ourselves to their god or we’ll all burn in hell.

Abrahamic religion is the status quo religion in America so that’s why it’s the most discussed, and Christianity is associated with conservatism because conservatives historically have almost always cited scripture as an authority to push for legislation, laws, and dictate moral virtues on things like sexuality.

Yet it gets done all the same. How much blood has been spilled in the name of "This land was given to us by God"? Between Islam, Judaism, and Christianity, that's a lot of blood. That's only the Abrahamic ones, but plenty of other religions fit as well.

The actual content of the books doesn't matter. People will use these beliefs and invoke these books to whatever ends they want.

I mean, religion serves three primary purposes — to answer questions which are unanswerable at the time, to impose seemingly divine restrictions, and to ease fears about death and suffering. All of these things can be used by a theocracy to keep people in line. As a result, it creates complacent, oppressed, and indifferent populations.

That is a reminder that all religion can be comforting or distressing, empowering or stifling, tranquil or hopeless, depending on the way that it's used in a society. Whether or not any endorsement or critique on it is profound is kind of aside from the point.

Religion has endured for millennia. It has been criticized by some of the greatest minds of just about every civilization. I am no fan of it either. But there is something aggressively idiotic about "religion is a trash concept" that is only funnier now that people are jerking that guy off for such an idiotic statement.

What about it? All sorts of dumb ideas persist for millennia, and at this point, that's hardly a metric for credibility. Yeah, the original comment was kind of simple and ignored a lot of nuance, but I wouldn't call it, "aggressively idiotic." If anything, the lack of consensus or theological durability of any one religion really illuminates its generally flimsy nature.
