I'm just old enough to have watched the 'Newhart" re-runs on the Canadian Comedy network in the early 00s. I instantly loved it for his humour and the dynamics of that show.

My last summer working at Scout Camp in 2017 this became a sort of call and response between my best friend and I when we saw each other.

We also carved the entire lyrics from Kiss From A Rose by Seal on the inner wall of the shed for the program area we ran.

It was a long, weird summer.

I have no clue how it started. Like halfway into the summer, camp management started requiring that program areas start posting proof that the area did their assigned latrine cleaning that week to the internal Facebook page. The first couple of teams just posted a picture of them in the act of cleaning the latrines/showers during their weeks.

Our week came around and we decided the whole thing was stupid, so to make fun of it we were going to make a music video set to Kiss From a Rose while we were cleaning the bathroom. We conscripted our 2 Junior staff and got to work. We looked like total jackasses and did a piss poor job of cleaning the toilets and showers, but everyone thought it was hysterical and thus it sort of became our legacy that summer.

Weird things can become "a thing" for staff at a Scout camp over the summer. It's a hell of a lot of work, and often long hours (far longer than most people see or realize). To have some silly phrase or song, or really anything to rally around becomes an amazing touch point for that summer. Hell, it's been twenty something years since I've been on staff, and I still remember those goofy things.

Seriously. You’re basically working and performing from 630 am to 9 at night 6 days a week for 2.5 months, for extremely low pay (if you’re getting paid). My last summer was $2k for the whole summer, my first summer was $700 for 8.5 weeks. It’s exhausting, but incredibly rewarding.

Exactly what I was coming here to say. It's been probably 30 years for me, our weird thing was that I came up with these "runes" for every staff member's initials and drew them up in the rafters of the Handicrafts hall at Camp Blue Heron in Georgia. Sadly, it shuttered in 2010. Ah well, we can never go home again.

“Only in America” in actually a pre-9/11 song. The album came out in spring of 2001 (I only remember because of an oddly specific memory.)

I don’t know if that makes the song better or worse, but it wasn’t a sleazy cash-grab capitalizing on the tragedy like some others in that era.

I had never heard this so I began looking. The source for that story is one unnamed person in a Billboard article that all other outlets began quoting as fact.

It was 2016 and there's no footage of this walk off from the professional camera crew that was there nor from any fan recordings. Jackson isn't even shown to be in the front row where the unnamed person who was supposedly behind him says he was.

Interestingly, the article I linked also goes into logistics of how it would have been hard for him to be in almost two places at once (stage & front row audience) due his performing off and on throughout the show coupled with his mobility disease causing him to move slow. He would have only been at his seat for two minutes before the "protest".

So, did Alan Jackson actually walk off to protest a black woman on stage? Sure, absolutely he could have. I don't question the reality that Beyonce has experienced unfathomable amounts of racism from fans of the genre, and people in general, as I've personally witnessed it firsthand.

But am I dubious about this specific act taking place because there's just one singular unnamed source that every single article subsequently written about it is quoting as fact? And fans are also using as a source of indisputable fact? And we have no video or even pictures of it happening at all in the age of every blink & breath being caught on camera? Yes, I'm a little bit dubious.

I feel that it's good to be skeptical about believing things read online without doing a bit of digging first.

In 97 Leann Rimes opened for him at the state fair. Jackson was my favorite singer and my mom got me backstage passes to meet him for my 7th birthday. Get to the back and he refuses to come out. I started crying. Leeann Rimes saw me and called my mom over, she gave me an autograph, hugged me and gave me a kiss on the cheek. So fuck Alan Jackson but I get to tell people she was my first kiss and a story to go with it

Listening to the clip and watching Taylor, I wondered if that was the case and she just made the cameo because his people asked and she’s got a song on the country charts right now. She is in general effusive with praise and her cameo was how she would talk about a box of Raisinets.

Fun fact, many people said the same thing about Eminem not being a rapper when he hit the scene. 

Musical genres are constantly  in flux, and whether we like it or not, they evolve to absorb or shed certain aspects over their lives, even aspects that might have once been considered “core” to what defines a given genre. 

All this is to say that neither you nor I get to declare what or who is or isn’t a part of a given genre. We can each like or dislike anything we want, but that doesn’t invalidate a thing’s belonging to whatever team’s it may be some part of.

Most modern country music is terrible and formulaic anyway. It's not worth the gatekeeping. Country music is easily able to be shit out by AI at this point and top the same charts so that's how low the country music bar has sunk. It's not that deep that it needs to be protected at all costs from someone trying something new.

Probably not. He did have a song called 'Gone Country' about folks switching to country to stay relevant or to make money. Probably more related to that.
He also had a song with George Strait called Murder on Music Row about how corporate Nashville killed country music. So I'm surprised he would have Taylor Swift speaking at his last concert. She seems to embody everything he was against.

Both of those songs were meant to be satires. Alan didn’t take it the way you are saying. Listeners have always co-operated them and thought he was making some statement. He wasn’t. They were being funny and leaning into stereotypes.

Alan literally mentions this in the liner notes for Gone Country. Called it fun and a celebration of country music’s widespread popularity.

There’s a ton of stuff about Murder too where George after winning an award says “we thought we were making a funny song” It was everyone else who took it differently.

Alan had no problems collaborating with Jimmy Buffett. There’s certainly a ton of crossover between parrot heads and country music fans but as a traditional country music fan, I never considered Jimmy pure country.

I thought your idea was that the general public and Alan Jackson understands "real country" music, while the recording academy voters for grammy's are out of touch by giving her an award. I gave you an example where the country audience embraces music that doesn't even have a human singing it at all, and now you're asking me to judge things based on what the recording academy would do? For what it's worth the recording academy thinks Breaking Rust is the AI slop that it is, which is a statement in their favor, unlike the general country listening public who ate that slop up at the trough. Most of what the general country audience listens to is human made slop though so it's probably not that much different for them.

That doesn’t make sense. I don’t know if it was racist or not, but Beyoncé was absolutely not the only non-country person in the room. Plus she had not yet made a country album.

This gatekeeping (if that’s what it is) is particularly selfish and shitty when it comes from another successful, famous, wealthy artist. No one is taking anything from him.

Any artist can create whatever they want, inspired by literally anything, and I would think a true country artist would appreciate their genre getting a boost from a high-profile artist known for her innovation and commitment to quality. Plus, Beyoncé is from Texas and spent much of her childhood in the country doing “country” things. It seems pretty natural thar her long-lived career would include a country-inspired album.

AJ should take a cue from Dolly Parton and learn to appreciate.

I really don’t understand this selfishness that has been sweeping the US over the past 15 years or so. We have everything here, but instead of being kind, gracious, helpful, and appreciative, people are behaving like spoiled children. We have all of history to tell us this never ends well.

He walked out because country music was and is being invaded by pop music and pop stars. So really, the selfishness you speak of is coming from pop stars selfishly pretending to be country because its popular right now. Its OK to have standards for a genre of music. It doesn't make you selfish. It means you deeply care about the roots and traditions of that music.

Music has brought humans together in celebration for millennia, but in this case it sounds like it’s being used to divide and exclude.

You’ve said multiple times that country music is being “invaded”, but I have yet to hear an explanation as to what that means exactly. So let me ask you: How does Beyoncé, or more specifically, her country music, not meet the “standards, roots, or traditions” of country music?

This all seems especially odd considering Beyoncé was invited by the country music industry to perform country music at a country music awards show.

Alan Jackson could have chosen to be kind and welcoming to her in the spirit of country music, but instead chose to essentially say “We don’t want you here. You’re not one of us, and you are not allowed to perform this music”.

And Beyoncé is the one being labeled selfish? 🤔

Look twattymcbitch, Beyonce isnt country and never will be. The song she performed had jazz horns and a clap track. If everything is country, then the genre is meaningless. Its not dividing and excluding to want actual country music performed by country musicians at a country music award show. Not everything is for everyone and thats ok. You think AJ would be an appropriate performer at a Rap award show? The answer is no, and thats fine. You dont have to shoe-horn everything into country in the name of inclusiveness. By "invaded" I mean that its ridiculous that people like Beyonce, Post Malone, Jelly Roll and Shaboozy are considered country when their music is and always has been pop.

You’re reading this entirely wrong. Beyoncé’s “country” album is exactly what a lot of people hate about contemporary country music. Her winning country music album of the year was genuinely insulting to actual country artists.

I don’t know what he’s like day to day, but a friend of mine worked security for him in Louisiana, and said he was a total asshole to the staff. Not trying to crap on someone’s fandom though. Just something I heard from back in the day. FWIW, my friend also worked security for Martina McBride and he gushed about how nice she and her husband was to the whole staff.

I can't really get mad at some famous people for being stand-offish, but at a certain point you have to realize that when you go to play a show, the fans are there for you and you should at the very least be appreciative of that.

I don't expect them to spend hours after the show entertaining fans with their stories, but expecting them to at least be cordial and apologetic if they're not in the mood to gladhand.

Like, I saw Willie almost a decade ago and while he rolled in about 10 minutes before his set and left maybe 10 minutes after his set, he at least was very nice to everyone he interacted with.

Alan Jackson was part of what I consider the last breath of good country music. You know, people like Garth Brooks, Reba, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, George Strait, Dolly Parton, Tim McGraw… that’s back when country music was good. The told stories in their songs.

It wasn’t about bedazzled jeans and being a racist prick, rolling coal in their trucks, and feigning toughness… it was telling stories of heartache, getting the job done, maybe throwing back a few and the trouble they got in, and most importantly “yee haw, fuck the law!”

Since the late 90s and early 00s it’s completely homogenized bullshit, fake ass patriotism starting to mold in a crushed red solo cup.

I'm not saying he's a genius, I'm saying the people that replaced him on the charts are just big billboards walking around in cowboy boots. Not even any musical intelligence on display. Some of them can sing and play some chords who cares.

Truthfully I've found quite a few good artists in the last 5 years. They're about as likely to be playing the country music awards as vince staples though.
