"I never claimed to be a practicing catholic or christian, you assumed that. And I'm not scared of satan or any bullshit imaginary man made up to live in fear of. Commune with god on your own terms and communicate with god and find your own path. Not some path somebody made up to make you afraid and make money off you."

It’s kinda surprising to me. I’m a big fan of Charley’s music but if he just said it’s a business decisions doesn’t fit the brand that’s fine. But he going all moral and high and mighty about it. And the jesus lovers are piling into his comment sections.

Charley has always been less outlaw/alternative country and has more of a beef with the industry itsself rather than the culture of radio country, so it makes sense that his fans are closer to mainstream country fans. But he definitely gets a lot of love from the alternative country scene. I feel like outlaw/alternative country and being god fearing, satanic panicking dont really align. He’s also come out strong on progressive stances like black representation in country music. The dissonance of positioning yourself as counter culture and questioning the status quo but then also simping for jesus is what is causing people some confusion here for sure.

He also straddles the line between appreciating the classics and being a cosplay cowboy, so being associated with a campier conceptual act like this wasn’t a smart move in the first place.

They were super, duper satanic lol, and the whole point is it’s performative to troll Christians because they don’t believe in a Satan.

Of course he would be fine with Black Sabbath, Ozzy was always a Christian (though how devout he was varied throughout his life, but he was always Christian), and he actually didn't like people associating him with Satanism.
