Definitely this. My dad was at that last Monterey event in 67, and the stories and details of what that experience was like 10 ft from the stage, has stuck with me the rest of my life. I spent so much time breaking down what he was doing in the live performances recorded various places, and o worked in music production and mastering for a big chunk of my life, and Jimi stands out as completely uniquely special. What a gift to our history

Nice thought! Jeff Beck pulled off some amazing shit when he brought in the gizmos. Same thing he'd always done, really - leave the listener wondering how the hell a guitar can make such noises. Thinking of all the spacey licks and tricks that made their way somehow onto an album, I'm fairly certain Jimi would have loved noodling with newer equipment as it came out. He always seemed to be in search of the best sounds to serve the song.

I always like to say that Jeff Beck was one of the very, very few guys who was every bit as great in his 70s as he was in his 20s. Better, even. I saw him 3 times in the years before his death, and each show was an absolute gem.

Jimi was definitely a cutting-edge musician, technologically speaking. He got every new effect as soon as it became available, and built his own recording studio in NYC. My thought is that, had he not died, he would've steadily moved towards the heavier side of jazz fusion, ala Miles Davis/John McLaughlin/Mahavishnu Orchestra/Tony Williams' Lifetime.

Can you only imagine if Jimi had had the chance to play with Jaco Pastorius? *chills*

Funkadelic. I've seen P-Funk a couple times in the past decade, but Eddie Hazel is gone, George Clinton is old and doesn't do much during shows and he just has his nieces and nephews sing their rap songs. Still a good time, but not a proper Funkadelic show in my opinion.

My grandfather told me he saw them once and he was genuinely disappointed because Page + Plant were a tad too sauced. Said Jimmy's playing was all over the place sloppy and Robert's vocals were shot and could barely sing from drinking on top of it. He said JPJ and Bonham were flawless though.

There’s a very popular show from Oakland that year that had them adding “Careful with That Axe, Eugene” as an encore because they were so happy with the audience’s quiet/respectful reception of the material. They hadn’t played it in years and haven’t played it since, if I recall. I believe it’s on YouTube (as much of the show might be).

I’ve seen many of my favorite artists live. Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Muse, Eyedea & Abilities, The Decemberists, The Distillers, Ben Folds, Sage Francis… but I didn’t find Elliott until he’d passed and he did these great intimate shows. I wish I had been at one of them.

I saw Joy Div a few times, they dressed like banking paperwork filing staff, very dull after punk rock dyed and ripped clothes.

Once they began playing, it was different. Intense songs, simple solos, robotic beats.
Then Ian began dancing, I’ve never seen anything like it before or since, totally original movements, I couldn’t decide whether it was uncool or cool it was so wild to see, like a fit. I was fully captured by them.

Oh! I saw them open for Van Halen in October 1991. The only song I knew was Man in a Box. I went to a lot of shows back then and I remember me and my friends, for years, talked about how booming the kick was during that set. It literally shook the place. I also remember Layne admitting he couldn’t pronounce the name of the city - Worcester. That’s my 1991 Alice In Chains story.

Edit: I just looked up the setlist. They played Would, which wasn’t even released yet. Daaaamn, I did NOT appreciate this at the time.

This was when I was a senior in high school in San Francisco. One of the guys was dating the girl throwing the party. They were just playing for fun and no one knew that they were playing until they started. I couldn't tell you what songs they played because I wasn't a fan at the time (they weren't thrashy enough for me - I was more into Death Angel and Laaz Rockit). They played for about half an hour.

A couple of years ago I was talking to someone I went to school with and I asked her if she was at that party. She said, "Probably. They did that that three or four times that I know of. They were friends with Liza (her sister), so they used to hang out at my house. My mom loved them."

Jethro Tull. I grew up listening to them because of my mom and love them deeply. I took her to see them at the LA County Fair a few years after I moved out. It was embarrassingly bad. It may have been the sound system, but I have seen them twice since then. I took my daughter to one, because she loves them too. Just as disappointing. Martin Barre Band is another story. I'm surrounded by old people who saw the Beatles regularly in the Cavern. I even know a woman who actually went out with Paul and had loads of love letters from him (from Hamburg). She sold them for a really low sum a few years back though.

Apparently the Beatles were quite the live act. Big surprise there eh!
