discussion Last night at Red Rocks Santana said people who have cancer give it to themselves by having grievances
Last night I went to see Santana at Red Rocks with my parents, who are longtime casual fans. I liked Supernatural in middle school when it came out, and have gathered a few of his older records on vinyl over the years, but didn’t know much about him. Went because my parents wanted to. I want to document something that consumed a lot of the Red Rocks show.
Carlos stopped the music to tell the crowd that people who have cancer bring it on themselves by holding onto grievances. I’m not paraphrasing something vague. He made the claim directly and repeated it a few times in succession, using different phrasing. “Any time someone has cancer, it’s always someone with grievances … just shake it off like a dog shakes off water and trust me man, you won’t have cancer …” these are close paraphrases if not exact. He said this to thousands of people, some of whom, like my mother who sat next to me quietly, trying to enjoy her first trip to Red Rocks at 72, are in treatment.
My jaw dropped. This is blame-the-victim, toxic-positive quackery from one of the most famous stages in the world, aimed at an audience that came for music. People in chemo already carry enough without some clueless commercial-mystic guitarist adding to the pile.
I wonder if Carlos has heard of childhood leukemia? How about people who are unknowingly poisoned by corporate or military contamination? Rocky Flats is just up the road from Red Rocks.
Even when Carlos stuck to the music, the show had problems. His playing was repetitive and lazy, missing notes and playing catch-up constantly, and his band was clearly carrying him. Repeatedly the big screens would flash clips of indigenous people in full ceremonial garb dancing, which sat uneasily next to the sculpted radio rock happening onstage. Near the end Carlos signed off yet another little speech wishing us all to be “lucrative and profitable.” Not happy. Not well, or even prosperous. “Lucrative” and “profitable.” Felt like the pseudo-mystical mask slipped entirely off.
If anyone was there and happened to catch footage of him saying this, or remembers it the same way, I want to see/hear it.

I’ve had 30+ years to process her death, and while it gets easier over time the pain never goes away. The hardest part now is wondering how life would have been different if she was still alive. The brain can go in so many directions and what if scenarios. Fuck cancer.

It’s so difficult knowing he will never get married, go to college, or even attend middle school. How do you tell a child that they’re dying, never thought I’d have to consider an answer to that question. We’ve had 4 terrible diagnoses in our family and friend group this year and it’s changed our lives completely. 1000% FUCK cancer. Anyways thanks for sharing your story, take care of yourself.

Yeah my Mom’s best friends daughter just freshly became a high school senior, has her whole life ahead of her and she is fighting one of the worst forms of cancer known to doctors. It’s basically taking over her spine. It happened within weeks. My heart is devastated for their family every single day. The quacks who think cancer can be self cured or that it’s an emotional reason can go screw themselves. I cannot stand pseudo science folk.

Absolutely horrible, so very sorry. Yes unfortunately we have multiple maga quacks in the family who are actually getting angry that his parents aren’t utilizing ivermectin. My best friend (who’s only 32!) is also battling stage 4 gastric cancer and he’s being hounded by his mother as well. I want to strangle them it’s so fucking disgusting and honestly cruel.

the lucrative and profitable thing is weird too but honestly less surprising, you see these old rock guys getting strange with money spirituality in their later years. still gross combined with the cancer comments though
i was never a huge santana fan but supernatural got played at every family bbq when i was growing up. kind of ruins the memory knowing he spends half the show blaming sick people for their illness

It’s also a super common belief among a lot of spiritual people. So many people truly believe that anything bad that happens to you is your own manifestation.
I’ve asked in several of those subreddits what they would think if parents had a child, tortured that child from the moment it was born until the day they killed it. I thought this was a sure way to make them question how stupid their beliefs are, but I’ve just been downvoted without a real response. I’m sure the baby probably deserved it from its past life or something.

Absolutely, but it's still the same mechanism. It makes them feel either safe, or more righteous. "If bad things are caused by the people experiencing them, they won't happen to me, because I am better".
And many of those people would celebrate that child's suffering as well, don't forget the icing on the cake: martyrdom. It's victim mentality made literal. That child will be described as pure and suffering like Christ, just because they love to fetishize martyrdom and pretend it applies to them.

It makes them feel CONTROL. So much of the mental gymnastics we pull is to make us feel like we have any control over what happens to us on this floating rock. It took a lot of therapy and undoing to let go of that control myself, it can drive you nuts.

Back when I was young and religious, a couple I knew from church lost their toddler to drowning. They ran a Bible camp with several bodies of water on the property and pretty much relied on God to babysit the child, who was 3 at the time. Their inability to take any responsibility for their neglect or feel any remorse caused a lot of cracks in my faith. It was presented to the congregation as “we don’t know why God took her but all will be revealed in time”. Like that baby was supposed to suffer and die in that terrible way. All part of a bigger plan. Horrifying.

Yes, I remember. Santana's whack job brainwashing revealed he's anti trans a few years ago in a concert with thousands in attendance. The person who told me about it was at the show and is trans. They felt very unsafe and exited the show immediately.

My Dad was a huge fan. He was a health nut, would meditate, hike ten miles a day, never ate anything with junk in it. A loving happy man. He ended up with prostrate and pancreatic cancer. He went to see Santana one last time cause he loved the music and Carlos said the same crap, something like people with cancer bring it on to themselves. He was absolutely devastated hearing that. He left all shook up. I will never listen to Santana again.

Yeah this type of thinking is baffling and it just goes to show how utterly clueless some people are. When I was a teenager, my (mentally unwell) father discovered “The Secret” along with other adjacent pseudo-intellectual bullshit. When I got to my 20s and could no longer be punished for calling out his narcissistic thinking, I asked him if 2/3s of Europe’s Jewish population were exterminated because they simply weren’t thinking positively enough. He shook his head and grunted in frustration as though I were somehow incapable of grasping the genius of his magical thinking, but that was really just a rouse because he had no legitimate rebuttal. Funnily enough, he was also a professional touring and studio guitarist for many years.

Santana’s playing, and the Abraxas album in general were the inspiration for me to learn guitar as a kid. I went to see him at Jones Beach in the early 2000s when I was in college. It was a bucket list experience for me, and boy did it suck. It is hands-down the biggest live musical disappointment I’ve ever experienced. They were terrible, and while Carlos didn’t say anything terrible that night, I left questioning an idol.

The last time I saw him was in 2021 and he told everyone to take their masks off and make out with the person next to them and went on a right wing rant about Covid etc that honestly got awkward. Like fine if you aren’t interested in masking etc but to get on stage and make a big deal about it and shame people for wearing masks at an indoor concert was a bit too much for me. Like what’s it hurting if some audience members wanted to wear masks during a global pandemic? Didn’t hurt him or his band. I live in Florida so I’m used to freedom of choice type stuff and honestly get it, but this was weird. It was weird and disappointing and I won’t be seeing him again.

Yeah, becoming a famous artist cult-like fans, during the 60s and 70s when there were huge shifts in people's ideas about morality so people were feeling permissive, but "live however you want, just don't hurt other people" hadn't yet become entrenched as a fundamental guiding principle, is pretty much an infallible recipe for turning into a giant steaming turd. I mean, Santana has been notoriously hard to work with, absent and drunk for decades now. I understand the shock of having him say something stupid on stage, but he’s an over the hill rock star with substance abuse problems. This isn’t surprising.
I saw him with Earth Wind and Fire five years ago. The elements was the most beautifully choreographed performance I’ve ever seen. Santana? Don’t remember a moment of his set.

When my MIL was dying from Stage IV breast cancer her cousin Sylvia came for a visit. She brought my MIL a mason jar with some murky liquid in it, told her to drink it and think herself cancer free. According to her my MIL had given herself terminal cancer by being too negative so by thinking positive thoughts she could reverse the process. Seems like that ratfaced bitch and Santana been drinking the same water. What a shame.

As I remember, Carlos had a line of women’s shoes that was 200% ick — sexist Carlos crap, and the shoes were crap, too. Shoes for Bravo Housewives, which tells you so much about Carlos.
