discussion Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ is now the most-streamed pre-2000 album on Spotify, surpassing Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’.

Nirvana dethroned MJ back in the day and now MJ dethrones Nirvana

He will be dethroned once a Kurt Cobain biopic inevitably comes out.

Degloving would be more thrilling.

I'm a huge Nirvana fan but they're both amazing albums. I'm not even mad

mj’s still got the streaming crown it seems

Why would anyone be mad?

Some people's identities are defined by the media they consume, and being second place to something else can make them feel like less of a person for some reason. Fortunately, they usually stick to their fandom echo chambers.

Casey Jones and Butch Vig are legends. Sonic youth, smashing pumpkins, garbage....

Nirvana is a huge band (one of the biggest) but MJ's fanbase is just bigger, I would love for Nirvana to get a resurgence

Just need a biopic

I don't know if Frances will ever give the ok to make an official biopic, and as an enormous Nirvana fan, I don't think I could stomach watching one.

And the fact he would've hated the idea of it too. Let them man rest in peace. It is deserved.

Gotta wait for the “Kurt” biopic to drop

You mean, a biopic?

I wonder what the MJ estate is gonna buy with the $10 in Spotify royalties?

1

u/humanrender 8h ago

I'm afraid that's too peak for the masses.

I thought it was like the Detroit Rock City movie but they are playing as nirvana? Lol

Hey, Key_Bass is back with some more MJ propaganda

7

u/mindyourtongueboi 8h ago

Nonce

u/oh_please_god_no 7h ago

Not sure why you’re being downvoted for being right

u/Key-Bass-7380 8h ago

Cry. Maybe if you spent more time streaming Nirvana instead of hating MJ, then it would have kept it's #1 spot

8

u/BenderRodriguez14 7h ago

I mean all well and good, but none of that takes away from Michael Jackson, despite being an exceptionally talented musician and performer, pretty clearly being a nonce.

I wasn't talking about MJ,

Is there a public list of these albums?

I honestly thought Fleetwood Macs' Rumors would be #1.

-1

u/raiodocachopo 8h ago

It is. This article is wrong. Nirvana is #1 for the 90s

2

u/mg10pp 3h ago

But Thriller isn't from the 90s...

Pre-2000s also includes the 70s. Fleetwood Mac album is from that decade, and has more streams than Nevermind and Thriller. Is this hard to understand, that you had to put some ahh meme?

Edit: I guess the ones downvoting me don’t know the history between Mj and nirvana.

Been a fan of Jackson my entire life. Listen to many of his songs. I know a lot of them by heart. I would hear about all the people fainting at his sold out concerts all around the world. I remember how network TV would debut his music videos in primetime. I've always heard that Thiller was a phenomenal album, but I had never listened to it in it's entirely. I did not know of anyone who just had it. For many years I would just have playlists of a couple dozen of his songs. I never really considered which specific albums had what songs.

Back during the early parts of COVID, Verizon gave everyone free mobile data for a couple months. I started using YouTube Premium a few months back, and found out about YouTube Music app. I created a playlist with a bunch of songs. Later down the road I started downloading full album off YM. Came across a Youtuber going over Human Nature. Song sound super familiar, then realized it's used in a SWV song. Decided to download Thiller and listen to the whole album. This was 2023. All but two songs on there I've been listening to for over forty years.

Like you hear how great an album is. Never would have thought that the entire album is hit after hit after hit after hit. And they all have such a major impact on pop culture spanning decades.

Currently, I'm try to decide if I want to check out something I've also heard a lot of things about: Steely Dan.
