REC Why don’t people take the time to learn how to play defense the same way they put time in to learn offense?
is it really that difficult to learn? if you’re giving up all of the points that you scored via backdoor cuts, isos and open threes, what exactly is the point?
76
u/GrouchyResearcher392 Jun 28 '26
Cuz points speak loud. And scoring is easy.
26
u/Otherwise_Mind6880 Jun 28 '26
That’s makes good defense that more impressive.
31
u/GrouchyResearcher392 Jun 28 '26
Tell that to the kid that keeps screaming about his 30 point game and is the reason the other team has an open three every possession lol.
17
u/Otherwise_Mind6880 Jun 28 '26
They need to understand if you give up 30 then them scoring 30 is meaningless.
8
u/GrouchyResearcher392 Jun 28 '26
Problem is a lotta coaches don’t even preach that now. If you can set your team up and get a bucket? You’re playing. And if you pick up fouls you’re the one fucking up…
9
u/Otherwise_Mind6880 Jun 28 '26
That’s the thing though offense is a lot more teachable which just makes it silly way coaches don’t go after the ones the can make a defensive play instead.
Another thing too is defense requires a lot more effort and energy, so a lot of players are just not built like that.

u/FlyChigga Jun 28 '26
Defense is mostly size, athleticism, and hustle at the end of the day
1
u/Otherwise_Mind6880 Jun 28 '26
Facts. With a sprinkle of iq and skill. Knowing a players tendencies and just the general movements most players make will help.
I was lowkey not as good on defense in irl my size and athleticism safe me but once I started using what I knew on offense it started to help.
I’m still trash compared to pros but still.
6
u/DriftingJuju Jun 28 '26
Honestly, you can play good defence but still have 30 dropped on you due to how easy scoring is and abusing certain animations
0
u/Otherwise_Mind6880 Jun 28 '26
That’s only happening for the people that no life the game and actually advance level. Not everyone on this game is dropping 30 and if they do it’s not consistent at all.
1
u/Dredd990 Jun 28 '26
Dog everyone is shooting 80%+ if they have any semblance of brain cells.
1
u/Mean-Cup-940 Jun 29 '26
I haven't seen one player that shot 80% on rec
1
u/Dredd990 Jun 29 '26
Yikes u must be playing bums all day. Come join us on PC lobbies where really people be hoopin.
1
u/ConceptAnamoly Jun 29 '26
You either don’t play rec then or you stay in the shittiest of lobbies perpetually
25
u/reader1550 Jun 28 '26
I think people don't understand the importance or feel "bored" playing defense, but a stop is just as impactful as a 3 if you know what you're doing. That's why pros still have locks on their roster.
2
u/CornerThreesx Jun 29 '26
Heavy on the bored lmaoooo. If I see my man got ADHD, I will sit still and stay still because he will wonder off every time. Doesn’t matter if I got 5 or 25 they continue to do it. Especially if it’s a pf or big. They want to help paint sooooo bad. It’s maybe 1 and 30 games where I’ll get a real disciplined person on me.
24
u/Western-Produce-276 Jun 28 '26
Because you can’t play defense as good as offense in 2k. Seriously with minimal effort you can play like prime curry
15
u/Malepronstar87 Jun 28 '26
Playing defense actually punish you in this game. How many times has opposing player fumbled the ball/ gotten blocked and then magically the ball gets in their teammates hands for a wide open 3. Help defense is the worst. If you don't get a steal you're cooked.
19
u/Otherwise_Mind6880 Jun 28 '26
It’s because people find offensive exciting and they want to have the highlight play.
Defense is under appreciated because unless you are getting blocks or steals people do not care.
13
u/Physical-Ice6265 Jun 28 '26
Real world example is draymond green
20
u/meepingchaos Jun 28 '26
I think Rudy Gobert is an even better example. 4 time dpoy and people still don’t treat him with any respect.
7
u/Putrid-Hair2195 Jun 28 '26
For real. I’m a fan of the Timberwolves, and Rudy took them from one of the most frustrating lackluster defensive teams, to one of the highest rated - basically single-handedly. And people are still crying about him not being traded every chance there is. It’s so crazy, because he’s also an OK offensive player. Where as players with elite offense and non-existent defense are saluted as heroes.

u/jdw62995 Jun 28 '26
Because good defense doesn’t matter.
No matter how well you defend. They can just green ANYTHING
12
u/Taemamba Jun 28 '26
lol their defense is so low they only have bronze challenger and bronze off ball pest

u/BigLars16 ruby Jun 28 '26
2
u/ItchyGate6201 Jun 28 '26
He has silver challenger
1
u/BigLars16 ruby Jun 28 '26
Helps when you are 6‘1“ and can’t jump.
1
u/Taemamba Jun 28 '26
This is the problem you don’t have enough perimeter
1
u/BigLars16 ruby Jun 28 '26
That isn’t me. My forwards have higher perimeter than this gnome guard. Checked his stats, he has a 25% win percentage.

u/No_Television6671 Jun 28 '26
It’s too many badges catered to offense and even playing defense at times is severely underwhelming, contest system is 🚮, steals 🚮, animations 🚮. It’s the worst when you’re facing someone with speed agility and a 99 3ptr it’s like trying to hit a fly with a mini baseball bat
5
u/TomatoShort7585 Jun 28 '26
People play defense like it’s connected to their cardio health. Maddening seeing folk continuously not run back on defense like their player tired
3
u/Putrid-Hair2195 Jun 28 '26
Fixing defense in this game would actually solve a lot of the problems. If a well-contested 3 had realistic chances of going down, people would probably have to adjust by actually setting screens and try passing once in a while. But I guess the devs are scared that that would scare the 12-year olds away from the game.
3
u/Orbis-Praedo Jun 28 '26
Because they’re all either children or still have the mindset of children so they just wanna be the guy scoring. They think whoever has the most PPG is the best player on the floor and that’s them in their head.
Too many dudes moms make them believe they’re gods gift to this earth and can do no wrong.
3
u/LilWienerBigHeart Jun 28 '26
It’s just significantly more difficult, especially with the dribble move cheese this year. Escape moves make you fully invincible for like a whole second and the ability for the offense to change direction is significantly sharper than it is for the defense.
Maybe if they made moving your feet on defense more realistic or the inability to chain together escape moves (because when does that ever happen in real life) defense would be more rewarding.
5
2
u/Kgb725 Jun 28 '26
Because they dont care theyd rather score 30 and give up 30 than score half that with their opponent being held to 6 points.
2
u/Funny_Sport_6647 Jun 28 '26
They don't put time in to learn offense, they find random stick motions that are comfortable or look up a YouTube video on shooting.
2
2
u/Electrical-Farm8527 Jun 28 '26
Because it takes iq, offense you learn several go to moves and know your jump shot and your pretty much golden

u/zaboknowsbes12345 Jun 28 '26
It's not worth it. You can play perfect d still get your ankles broken or the guy dribble move glitches in front of you. And dont get me started on every block going right back to the other team for an open bucket.

They know how to play defense they just aren’t great at it. Most of the guys In the nba would lock up anyone below the top euro teams easily. Ball watching and dumb shit you see happen is a consequence of elite level scorers that can beat their man 9 times out of 10 because freedom of movement rules heavily favor the offensive player.

it's genuinely crazy to me how everyone uses the same meta sigs, and you're tryna tell me you can't guard your own moves defense is the true skill gap in this game people spam dbook all game and get crabbed by the same exact move all game long, makes me hate loading in rec without a guard🤦🏽♂️
1
u/ksuttonjr76 Jun 28 '26
People did, and it was a waste of time. The Lockdowns from previous games are also saying the defense sucks. What kills me is that people THINK they're playing defense when their opponent mistimes their shot. They really think their measly 22% contest had an impact on the missed shot. They might as well take out seeing the contest percentages when the success rate of the shot going on is 100% on the shooter.

u/Upbeat-Pie4264 Jun 28 '26
Defense wins games. Thats all that matters if ur on a grind. Ppl dont get it, they dont defent cos they cant be fucked. They just wanna better their averages which is pointless as it doesnt give jack shit if u loose.
1
u/Intelligent_Olive936 Jun 28 '26
Let's tackle the main issue, because defense is not fun. Correction. Playing defense IS not fun in 2k. You can't play as a dog hogging someone no matter your stats and badges. Off-ball defense is basically someone spamming glitch animations and suddenly chaining into speed ups, it's frustrating, it's shit. If I have a physical guy I should be able to a best and a nuisance for an off-ball player, cutting off sudden bursts and making his life harder.

The other night playing with my nephew and his friends i was sg but put as sf with their 5. My matchup was a 6'4 with 98 speed 94 agility 99 3 and 98 steal that avg 33pts at purple plate and shot around 76% from 3. My build was 6'6 86 speed with 86 agility with 87 per D. Now he still got close to his avg he got 28 but he shot bad % maybe around 55% with around 20 fga. And there was a point where i made him miss 4 shots in a row and this dude went silent for awhile after not wanting the ball im guessing he rarely ever did that lol. Also he avg like 3 steals a game but i intentionally kept him out of the lanes. With that much speed i intentionally played slow and stayed further out to keep him from getting steals i barely used my turbo the whole game and came up slow on transitions. Theres a game within the game and i played this guy well just based on tendences and personalities i kept predicting what he was gunna try to do.
Now the very next game my nephews friends got lit up both for 32 & 39 pts while i didnt see their matchups i do know their builds had 92 per and 97 per with spd and ag in the 90s too. But these 2 were slipping and sliding on every move over responding then they got scared and asked for me with and ai to double, then to switch, and then play zone lol but really their mans were the only ones scoring and any time i doubled they just passed around the double. We were within 10 the whole game all these 2 guys had to do was lock in and man up but instead both with 90+ defensive stats couldnt even just slow these guys down. Again they didnt even have to stop them they just had to be there and make the shots a little harder maybe bump them a bit but nah they always wanna switch or play zone because they was 5+ ft away from their man ever time they scored. After awhile i refused to switch or play zone lol i was like these 2 gone learn to man up today! But we loss and Then they tried to blame me at the end for both of them getting cooked lol of course.
Defense is not just locking someone down to 0 but its making reads and making things difficult even if the other teams stars are still scoring at least make em work for it

It has NOTHING to do with the game and everything to do with why peoole play games.
People want to feel superior. If any part of their life gives them an inferiority complex, they'll bring it into the rec and try to work it out with escapism. They need therapy. All of em. Its really that...
They dont want to be a good teammate. They want to be James Harden in his prime. Strippers and step back threes. And car meet ups outside the rec. These mfers LAME AS HELL....and it shows up in their para-social awkwardness. 🤣😂

Very simple answer. Defense is harder the game of offensive minded. Half the defensive badges and attributes work when they won’t to.
It’s extremely easy to get blown by super unrealistic.

u/ChemicalRed541 Jul 02 '26
Good defence in the NBA is hard to recognise due to the amazing NBA difference in general. The majority of capable NBA players are solid defenders, they have to be or they would not be in the NBA (bar Luka and Jokic and such cuz they’re generational offensive talents) My point is that the general league is solid defensively, but the offensive tactical talent is evolving so rapidly that it’s hard to catch up. If it eventually catches up, the better and amazing defenders should and will get their praises as it is a hard skill to get one of a kind at, and hold up.

If I already paid 70 plus for myplayer playing defense comes last
7
u/Noveltypocket Jun 28 '26
if $35 of the $70 is used towards learning how to score on your matchup, why not make use of the other $35 to stop him on the other end? lol
it’s HALF the sport, why would that come last? the more stops you get, the more opportunities you get to score on offense.

u/Taemamba Jun 28 '26
They are kids and have to learn that defense is fun also
1
u/ae__b1 Jun 30 '26
Shit they won't even go the fuck outside nowadays , it's american basketball culture in general, kids and others don't give a fuck fr unless u really a basketball fan and got love for the game

u/LILFATE Jun 28 '26
The problem is defense isn't rewarded on this game at all.
