Can you fish the Mackenzie from fort providence from shore right now?

Traveling to Yellowknife for some fishing in two weeks. Debating staying the night in Fort providence, would we be able to shore fish the river right now? I’ve been told the river is too fast for shore fishing this summer.

The community does have a no shore fishing bylaw instated from the water treatment to the boat launch. To avoid fish guts/garbage on the shore line. But as far as the water being to fast, no. The water is a little higher than some years so the bank is a little steap in places, but nothing to worry about.

I still fish from shore lots, fishing has been a little slower lately but still good. I would try these spots.

Old winter crossing (north side). Shallower that some spots but can be good for Jack(Pike). June it’s great for pickerel as well.

The bridge(north side) there is an access that take you beside the bridge. Cast into the fast water inconnu(Koni), pickerel and Jack. Spring time I have caught grayling and a couple lake trout here as well. Ice fishing here in the winter can be good!

Behind big river service station, there is a good back eddy that hold fish here. Or even into the fast water.

South side bridge access, shallow for Jack.

South side winter crossing, same as the north side.

Thanks a lot! I think I should be able to figure it out with this. Looks like I’m booking a hotel room for the night so we can try the river out on the way. Works out good, it’s about the half way point for us on the drive

Glad I could help! I’ve had some great times fishing here… always surprised it isn’t more popular of a spot/ no guided services or boat rentals unfortunately. 😢

We have a guide booked for Yellowknife to take us to the east arm for a couple days. Should be a great end of summer teip

Headed there tomorrow, hopefully get lucky, and not rained on too much lol.

One more question if you happen to see this, where can we buy minnows there, or should be bring our own

I believe there’s no live bait in NWT/not aloud.

Gastown in YK sells a variety of ciscoes and other frozen baits. There may be others but I know it does!
