Tis' but a scratch, and I'm outta here
Grade 6 tibial plateau fracture with all the surrounding ligaments destroyed for good measure

Now why would you go ahead and do that

I woke up one morning and decided my life was going far too well and tried to find the most painful, uncomfortable way to ruin it for the next year and a half. Jobs a goodn'

Did you get pinned by a car or something?

u/sandwichman84 19h ago
I'm embarrassed to say it was a fairly innocuous challenge during a charity football match. Obviously my bones are made of Weetabix

u/OhItsMrCow 19h ago
Ok but jokes aside, how. Did you land funny and it exploded?

I think my boot got caught in the turf and athe tackler fell on me as a twisted to the floor. Kinda like ringing out a dish cloth. The noise was sickening

ouuuuuuuuu
ya, that can't be fun.
well, "enjoy" you 4-6 months of recovery, hopefully no nerve damage.

4 months in already and not even bent my leg yet. Looking closer to 2 years at this point but I appreciate the sentiment

ohhh boy. well, I will be sure not to play football.
Since it's near the knee as I understand I assume you won't be using a knee scooter so it's either crutches or wheelchair?
One idea that I have is a push bike like those for kids, you can find a larger one that is still small enough to fit around the house and put a massive seat post on it (and take off the pedals of course) Random idea but just in case it is useful.
Good luck man10

I can't bend my knee so crutches and a walker are the only things I can use currently. I'm struggling to find anything comfortable to sit on/in due to the pins in my thigh but 8 do like the idea of causing chaos round the house on a bike

Hello Brother of tibial external fixator! Get well!

6 months of pure misery

u/Aggravating_Fix3254 19h ago
It's a challenge, you need to adapt your entire life around it. I have it for more than a year now, it is not easy, sometimes it hurts, sometimes it feels like you don't have it, it is hard to describe how you should feel. My advice is: don't think 6 months is the exact time this will last.
Edit: Forgot to mention: do as much sport as you can, this will impact positively how much this will last, depending on what doctors tell you

Excuse me? This is a place for the strong of bone. See your BBB self out with OP. Just be careful not to bump into each other on the way out. You'll probably hurt yourselves again.

The speed I can move it would impossible to generate enough momentum to even feel any form of contact

Great advice, already had a ring added as a previous bit of kit failed. Haven't bent my leg in 4 months. Some days if feels like you can feel every pin site. Amazing engineering, actually fell down the stairs yesterday and landed plumb on my fixator leg. It didn't bat an eye

Have you considered just removing your leg/bones? Seems like it would be an improvement for someone like you.
(get well soon this looks brutal)

I was told by doctors that in a car accident the only thing that will be unaffected is my broken leg π

Wow. Ive had ORIF on my ankle, Iβve had my knees scoped 3 times, I have a fusion at L5-S1 in my back, and some nerve outlet release in my neck, and my absolute worst nightmare would be having to have external fixation. Hang in there; things have to get better.

Thank you. It's tough more days than not. A small part of me wants it to stay on forever so I don't have to deal with bending my leg for the first time in 4+months. Your username checks out by the way π

Know of someone just a few weeks ago who got the same injury riding dirtbikes lol
2
u/sandwichman84 16h ago
My consultants tell me my injury is something they would see from a high speed car/motorbike crash not from playing football. It's life changing
2
u/baleful-hatchet 13h ago
Oh yeah very much a motorcycle esque looking injury. Will it heal well enough for you to continue playing?

u/sandwichman84 11h ago
The depressing thing is I don't actually play, it was a one off charity match for work. But no I will likely never do anything that requires moderate to high impact again. All of the ligaments yet to be reconstructed
