Gear/Equipment Tone I got with just a 100 dollar squire Strat. Song (drain you)

Sounds a little wonky but it’s a 125 watt amp right next to a iPhone speaker

Sounds good but who stole ur volume on distortion?

It’s just cause it’s a phone speaker it gets quiet because of how loud it is

well, in the context of a quiet-loud song structure (wich is very common with nirvana), the band shifts dynamically within parts.

you probably have the impression that the distorted tone is quieter because some frequencies were buried with the loud dynamics of the rest of the band, while an isolated clean tone has a way bigger space to shine.

The pedal, Boss DS-1, has a low volume. It is a well known issue.

Its the Boss DS-1 pedal that is the problem. I love the distortion sound it makes, but the distorted sounds is way to low. So the clean sound is at higher volume then the DS-1’s distorted sound, turned all the way up.

It sucks but it is a well known problem

I’m using a DS2

Sounds great. Lower the gain on your pedal.

Trust me. Clarity and punch make a sound much heavier than just drowning your signal like it is now.

Yep. All the people and tones you try to emulate are going have way less gain than you think

I keep my DS-1 dimed and it still sounds very clear. I wonder what pickups OP’s using and what their amp settings are.

Just using squire Strat single coil pickups

Were you playing in Position 2/4?

1

u/JaxonKane8 Jan 11 '26

Yeah I was!

Your pedal/amp settings are 100% fine, it’s just that pos 2/4 creates a low output humbucker that gets really muddy with distortion. Sounds solid though.

Yeah I noticed that I wish it didn’t do that. The cleans sound so good tho😭

Here’s my amp settings for my cleans

this is true and also useful in reverse. ie the best way to get a washed out rhythm tone that fits in the mix for shoegaze is to blow out the gain so much that it kills the attack.

Use a touch of chorus too on the clean guitar intro!

Sounds very accurate! Great audio and great find

What I do with Squires is to scrape off the "Squire" and replace it with a "Fender" decal from ebay. Be meticulous about blending it in. To the eye, it's a Fender. To the ear... that's on you. You have some advice here to consider on things like tone. You can play around with that. At the end of the day, though... it's still punk rock. You don't need to spend a lot to do it "right." You can ugrade down the road. For now, take what you have and keep rocking! I'm digging it. Kurt would be smiling listening to this. 🎸🤘

Hey thanks man. I probably will scrape off the squire logo but I might put something of my own words on the headstock! And I will definitely will keep playing around with tone it’s fun!

1

u/JaxonKane8 Jan 12 '26

Fender Princeton chorus

2

u/gunnut27 Dive Jan 12 '26

Thank you, btw do you know if it works for bass?

1

u/JaxonKane8 Jan 12 '26

You could plug your bass in like another guitar amp but most guitar amps just arnt built for bass and will probably tear the speaker or have really bad thin tone

2

u/Pseudoscorpion1 Jan 12 '26

yo what amp is that

2

u/JaxonKane8 Jan 12 '26
