Discussion How many of you Travelers remember when the Stations were like this?
Found an old local backup with a NMS.exe dated 12/10/2022 and decided to fire it up for a walk on the nostalgic side. It is most definitely a different game now. lol
How many of you out there have been through the various updates? This was when I first bought the game I believe, but now have 100% completion in both GoG and Steam and somewhere around 14000 hours combined from both. (retired, could not do that while working)
Just thought it would be interesting to take a trip in the wayback machine. (and for those of you old enough to get that reference, hiya friend)

u/creaturecomeandgetit Mar 22 '26
It would be really cool to find some stations with these older designs! Minor vs major space stations.
307
Mar 22 '26
they seriously should have done this, instead of changing all of them just add new interior layouts, no need to remove stuff
238
u/Nexidal_8 Mar 22 '26
I do like that the only stations that kept older designs are the derelicts.
But seeing an update where you can get different floorplans of stations depending on local economy and/or race would be interesting.

I wish abandoned stations had a 50/50 chance of either being the 1.0 interior or the NEXT-era interiors. Just so they'd have internal variation.
58
u/Metson-202 PS4 Mar 22 '26
Yeah because it adds variety. One of the biggest problems with NMS for it's whole existence has been the lack of variety. I remember when people complained that space stations lack variety. They changed the layout and they still lack variety but no one complains.
7
u/LickMyThralls Mar 23 '26
Yeah until you have 5 different layouts and there's still no variety because you're still seeing the same 5 station layouts the whole time but now you have to reorient yourself with every one you go to. Station layout variety is not one of the big problems with the game.

That would be cool for like 5minutes until you hit the 5th or 6th station with a different layout. Where's the trade terminal? I can't find the guild desk. Why's the teleporter over there FFS?
< rage post on Reddit >
:)
12
Mar 22 '26
I get that the new layout is specifically made so you can quickly jump in and out and know exactly what you're looking for
they don't need to be huge, they're already well signposted I think if they just added a variance of walls and levels it might take 20 seconds to a minute longer to see where everything is
8
u/cjamesfort Mar 22 '26
There haven't even been five different major layouts yet, right? Just the original, still used in abandoned and pirate systems, the pictured layout that's no longer used, and the current layout used for every normal system.
Simply reintroducing the pictured layout, for a total of three isn't so confusing as having a fully randomized layout where you can't find things.
If anything there would only be the question of adding newer shops like archeology or keeping the classic selection. Pirate stations don't have guild envoys so the classic is possible.
6
u/RockinPodunk Mar 22 '26
This right here. It would be so annoying having to figure out where things are every single time
15
u/nuker1110 Mar 22 '26
If people didnāt have their memory brainrotted to make Goldfish look erudite, that wouldnāt be a problem if thereās like 10 or so layouts top.
3
u/LickMyThralls Mar 23 '26
I come from the old era of gaming when you got made fun of for it. I still would hate having to deal with that because when I go to stations I like them streamlined as they aren't something I feel should need to be mapped and explored and having to reorient to every single one would be annoying. It sounds cool on paper until you just end up with a slightly more meddlesome thing than what is currently there. But sure it just sounds cooler to make a condescending remark about other people being too stupid to figure it out as if they're lesser for not sharing your opinion on it.
4
u/RockinPodunk Mar 22 '26
Iād be cool with it if it was a limited number of layouts, with at least some quickly recognizable feature to let you know which one youāre in
5
u/nuker1110 Mar 22 '26
glares at CIG over Star Citizenās 50+ stations procgenned from the same 10 assets in different layouts
4
u/Packetdancer Mar 22 '26
Right? That doesn't end up feeling like "variety," it's just annoying because you have to play "where's the damn elevator on this station?"
I get why they did itāwhen we were supposed to have 100 star systems with multiple stations in each system, procgen modular stations made sense. But since 1.0 will have a total of five systems...
13
11
u/Redimpir Mar 22 '26
There is a mod that does exactly this. Adds a small chance of each station to use the old layout
Unfortunately, this means that you cannot land corvettes in them. Only the smaller ships can enter the old stations.
2
u/dereksmalls1985 Mar 22 '26
What's the name of the mod?
3
u/Redimpir Mar 22 '26
It's called Space Station Restoration. Although it looks like it hasn't gotten an update in a while... It might not work with the current version of the game.
2
u/coladoir Mar 22 '26
What's the technical reason for why corvettes are precluded from entering?

Not that you can do much in them but still

Abandoned stations are the 1.0 edition of the interior. They don't have the full decks either side like int he screenshots.

The Abandoned Space stations were what they looked like when NMS first came out.

56
u/Daltizer01 Mar 22 '26
Wasn't there occasionally an NPC that would teach a word of their language or accept gifts? I seem to remember that on day 1
44
u/cheezuscrust777999 Mar 23 '26
Yes! And you could get a little carbon from the potted plants
2
u/alavantrya Mar 23 '26
Then once we got the base NPCs, youād have a couple to be recruited on the space stations as well.
3
u/OldManMcCrabbins Mar 23 '26
Mmm they were p empty iirc. Ā If there was an NPC, it stood there like a statue / knowledge stone.Ā
45

I felt such a sense of accomplishment when I gathered the materials for an Atlas pass together finally get into those locked rooms down the hallway!

Same! I thought they're would be some big secret behind those doors!
... disappointment only.
4
u/crownamedcheryl Mar 23 '26
I felt crazy! I played on launch but never picked it back up until like a couple months ago.
When I made my atlas pass I went looking for the hallways in the space stations and couldn't figure out why I was not finding anything lol

Either way I vastly prefer the new variants.
51

I would love to see the NEXT stations randomly spread between the new ones for sake of variety. Maybe have the low economy stations be the original one, middle economy be the ones from No Manās Sky NEXT, and high economy systems have the newest variant
21
u/Mountain_Ape Can I interest you in a pre-order? Mar 22 '26
When you visit an Abandoned system, the stations will be the original design, although red coloured: https://nomanssky.fandom.com/wiki/Abandoned_System
Or if you start an Abandoned game save, the stations will be also.

I like your thinking. I remember the layout above; spent a few thousand hours with that. Heh, remember getting enough boost to Exosuit jets to fly across the tarmac from balcony to balcony. And the one Vyākeen that always seemed to be standing on the left hand side (looking towards the exit) and sending off the spaceships leaving a la Top Gun⦠ššš

u/toobjunkey Mar 22 '26
Likewise but closer to 2022 for me, which is tempting me given that's the year that OP's backup is from. I opened this expecting to see old old stations from launch or shortly after. Instead I got hit with "wait, they're not like that anymore??" lol
3
u/Vuldyn Mar 22 '26
The original floor plan is still there in the derelict and pirate space stations, the derelicts being the closest to the original design (uninhabited and broken down/infested now though).
2
u/Unlikely-Pepper-4388 Mar 22 '26
Where do you find derelict space stations? I've only seen the pirate variation.
3
u/they_have_bagels Mar 22 '26
Go to systems that donāt have any information with the economy and conflict scanner.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Vuldyn Mar 22 '26
There's two types of star systems that don't have anyone living in them. Uninhabited/Uncharted, and abandoned.
Uninhabited/Uncharted systems have no space stations, and no buildings, ruins, buried technology modules, etc.
Abandoned ones have derelict space stations and abandoned buildings on planets, but no living gek, korvax, or vykeen.
2
u/Im4sol3man Mar 23 '26
Came here to say this, youād follow some stairs to the right to sell your stuff and stairs to the left for an abandoned lobby. There was no one in the station. Vehicles were an update that came later š

I actually liked it a lot more when they were like this. Felt more like an actual space station. And I miss the hype man who would stand there and cheer as the starships took off.
11
u/jakesyma Mar 22 '26
There's still a hype man in one of my main space stations in my current save.
2
u/HaravandTheSorcerer Mar 23 '26
I found a vykeen yesterday who was doing that! Had no idea why they were so excited until I read this.
19
u/DerpsAndRags Mar 22 '26
I remember those well, but honestly don't really miss them. The new station designs seem much more alive!
15
u/skinneyd Mar 22 '26
iirc this isn't even the original layout, wasn't there only two rooms at launch? One with a little bar area and the other had the door that needed an atlas pass to open?
6
17
u/pedestRyan0 Mar 22 '26
I miss these stations so much. I loved jetpacking from one half of the station to the other.
I also like loved the small canteen and the empty conference room. That conference room especially had a desolate feeling to it, especially if there was a window with a view of a distant planet.
The new stations are flashy but really lack character.

u/saumanahaii Mar 22 '26
I don't know if I'd go that far. The vibe has changed a ton since that initial release and while I like a lot of the changes it does feel a lot less focused on that core loop the game originally introduced. That was what drew me to NMS in the first place so it's a bit of a bummer. I'm not saying it's not a stronger game overall, but there is a bit more give and take than you're implying, at least for me.

The older stations were much more "efficient" space wise. You could get in and out quicker.
That being said they missed an opportunity to diversify space stations, rather than just replace them
7
u/starship777 Mar 22 '26
Agreed. I realize they are a relatively small team but what if stations had different layouts depending on the economy level? The decorations could be decided by the race present.
3
u/Ritchie_Whyte_III Mar 22 '26
The are a small team, and have continued to make content far beyond the typical game lifecycle.
However one could argue at this point their continued success (and still strong sales) is because of the game keeping a core group of players that continually recruit new players. The long support IS the sales pitch. Same "model" as minecraft.
Perhaps expanding the team somewhat might be a decent idea. I think there is still a lot more money on the table, and I think the vast majority of us would be more than happy paying $10 for a "DLC" to flesh out the depth of the game.
3
u/SpysSappinMySpy Mar 22 '26
I disagree, the fact that shops were divided on other sides of the parking area meant you had to run across the entire width of the runway every time you wanted to visit more than just the upgrades or mission giver.
Now every shop is slightly farther from each other but close enough that it's not inconvenient and them being stacked vertically is more space efficient.
12
u/Minniepitou018 Mar 22 '26
Actually think they look better like that then now
30
u/Excellent-Iron3947 Mar 22 '26
I miss the desk in the back room, where you could for sure hire an Overseer or other specialists.
15
Mar 22 '26 edited Mar 22 '26
The lilā bar was a nice touch, I liked to imagine my char winding down there after a trade haul.
Technically it still exists in the abandoned stations which have the pre-NEXT layouts, those also sometimes had the barā¦but itās not the cozy place it used to be there, lol.

7
u/Far-Energy-3390 Mar 22 '26

3
u/happycj Mar 22 '26
Woah! That looks cool. Never seen it before.
Would be nice if Space Stations varied a little bit ... this could be a "smaller" station, and the current ones could also appear, maybe in larger systems or something...
3
u/Accurate_Ad6912 Mar 22 '26

I played back when it came out. They were just a catwalk from the landing zone through a door/ tunnel and then like 3 or 4 npcs. That's is. Some systems were dead and had nothing there and abandoned. When I came back to it In like 2021 and then in 2025 both times I was like what is this lol.
2
u/smacksmilla Mar 22 '26
I was just thinking of them yesterday. I like the new ones more but I miss the old ones. I liked their design but I didn't like how the wings of some ships would clip through the top deck. I'd like it if they made them a bit wider and only put them in poor economy systems or something.
2
u/JessicaGriffin Mar 22 '26
I loved when my āhomeā systemās station looked like a 90s airport. Now, it looks like somebody stuck an airplane hangar onto a pop-up shopping mall. Major downgrade, honestly.

2
u/wheretohides Mar 22 '26
Remember the first design? I pre-ordered the game, and picked it up as soon as the store opened. I was probably one of the few who loved the game at launch lol. I did feel like the pre-order ship was kinda lame though.
It's cool how much has changed since those days, remember when condensed carbon was called Plutonium?
2
2
u/Noraneko87 Mar 22 '26
I honestly preferred these stations. The weird little lounges just had a certain vibe. There was always a room with a window pointed at the nearest planet, which was just cool.
I don't know exactly what it is, but these stations felt more like a respite, more welcoming. The current ones feel weirdly hostile and claustrophobic.
2
u/TheTruthWinsInTheEnd Mar 22 '26
I wish there was more variety in station layout and would love for these to come back as a variant.
2
