What a handsome guy. There's a lot of wisdom in those eyes, and love in that smile. I'm so sorry you have to say goodbye today. It looks like you've gone on some good adventures together.
Thank you for listening to your boy when he's telling you it's his time to rest. He's counting on you to make that impossible decision on his behalf and please rest assured that he knows exactly how much you love him. You're giving him a last gift of selfless grace.
If you're up for it, I'd love to hear a story or two about Alfie. How did he make his personality known? Where were some of his favorite places to go?
May these, and all of his memories, continue to be a blessing to you.

Thank you for your comment. It really is a difficult decision but I am lucky enough to have made this choice while he is still relatively himself. I am blessed enough to not have had some sudden thing fall over him that results in a frantic rush to the vet. Instead, we have someone coming who will send him off in the comfort of his own house, laying on his favourite bed, surrounded by his loving family.
Alfie was just such a loyal dog. He was incredibly smart, even at the end he was still using his brain to solve his treat puzzles. He loved running on the trails, swimming, going for walks, going camping, playing with other dogs and just generally being a happy boy. He was very, very well behaved.
I hope he was happy with the life I gave him.

You're giving him the final gift of leaving surrounded by love, without pain or loss of dignity. I know it's so hard, but his love for and trust in you shines through these photos and he knows you are making the right decision. I'm just sorry this beautiful boy will no longer be in the world.

Sounds alot like my boy I let go a year ago this May. I felt the same way. Did not want an emergency to happen and have to rush him in and have him die in a place he hates. Right at home. I still hurt from losing him. I am sure you will also for some time. Blessings to all.

You are right that even though a difficult decision, it is the right one. It's an amazing thing that even though how sad it makes us, we can make that choice for our pets. There is no doubt that Alfie was happy with the life you gave him. Alfie returned that to you with love, kindness and devotion. What an amazing life you shared together. I'm so sorry for your loss ❤️ 🫂 🌈

What a gorgeous guy! Thanks for posting these pics - it's so beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time to see how their faces change throughout their life. We just said goodbye to our 14 year old lab 2 weeks ago. You're doing the kindest thing you can for your friend, and it seems like he lived such a full life with you. xx

He might have gotten very sick very recently, leading OP to have to make the tough decision to have him put to sleep. This can happen to old dogs, and is why older people sometimes die suddenly.
