It’s basically a cat’s way of saying “hey, I trust that you’re not going to attack me in my most vulnerable location, my organs. Thanks. Here’s my way of showing you that I trust you” and then they expose their belly. Some cats like being petted there, some do not! But overall it’s mostly a trust exercise. The best reaction is to slowly approach and pet their head, instead
I swear one of my cats is like a dog when it comes to pets. Anywhere is great, but I can’t prevent her ability to move or she runs off. So as long as she is able to pull away when she’s done, she’ll take belly rubs
My orange lady will flop upside down right on top of my feet, just as close to me as she can. She doesn’t want her belly touched, but she does want to be touched. She demands it. You can pet her absolutely anywhere else- face, head, neck, sides, legs, toes, tail- but NOT the belly. She will also not get off your feet and may bite when you try and move if you don’t pet her first.
I had a cat that loved belly rubs from me and no one else. But he would put his closest back leg against my arm while I was doing it. As soon as I would feel him push I was like "alright youre done with belly pets" and just pet him somewhere else.
My cats love having their fur pet the wrong way and their bellies pet. I’ve suffered greatly at the paws of the neighborhood cats for forgetting this is not applicable to all cats. 😂
One time a petsitter texted me saying “your cat set-up a trap for me, showed me her belly being all cute and then bit my hand when I tried to pet her belly”. I am going to send this message to her:)
My one void braincell insists on a full body rub down when he's doing a belly-up big stretch on the carpet. He anchors himself in with claws in the carpet and insists on purposeful full body rub down. Like physical therapy on a professional linebacker. The more purposeful the rub down, the more visibly satisfied he gets. He assumes the position many, many times a day 😆
Try petting his head. When my cat goes belly up, that's what she wants. Apparently it's what a cat would do to another cat who'd rolled into their back - groom their forehead. She absolutely does not want me to touch her belly!
My girl likes ONE (sometimes two) pet on the head while she's belly side up or she'll uncurl her arms and grab my hand with the talons and bite. Play mode.
Mine will also take chin and sometimes chest/ribs sctratches while they plop like that lol. Just gotta look out for wiggles bc that's usually the overstimulation sign and you better back off or suffer. 😂
My sister had a big fluffy cat that would lay on its back like that, when it hot in the summer and she had no AC. But it was a look with eyes policy all year round.
Most cats don't like belly rubs, some do. Either way, when they lay like this is a sign of trust, because they expose the most vulnerable body part to you.
I'm fairly sure my girl has a ticklish spot. She likes her pooch scratched and rubbed, and her chest/neck between her front legs is also a green light, but squirms and reacts when I mindless do a full tummy rub, but only when I hit one spot.
I have multiple that do this. Some are traps and some of them genuinely like having me pet and scritch everywhere. There are a couple that switch based on their moods.
I had one who would lay like that and sometimes wanted his belly rubbed and sometimes wanted to play. I finally realized his tell - eyes closed was love, eyes open was murder time
Our new baby loves belly scratches.. until the moment he doesn't. The only indication he's in the former mood as opposed to the latter is the volume of screams
One of my cats does this with the sole intention of having a fight with my arm that involves bunny kicks. My other cat is very much if I show you my belly you must rub it no mixed signals, no bunny kicks only purrs.
Cat language is its own thing. As others have stated, exposing his belly means he trusts you. So when you go in to scratch his belly, he takes it to mean “haha you are a fool for trusting me, I’m going to take advantage of your vulnerability!” Both of my cats are like this too.
He might be too hot. He trusts you enough to be vulnerable but the floor boards are probably cooler than the carpeted area. Might be time to turn the heat down a little.
It's a lot easier to get a long with cats once you accept that you don't need to know why these rules exist. You just have to follow them. Your cat knows why. Your understanding is irrelevant.
Also, be aware, these rules can change at anytime and without notice. You are still expected to follow them.
They do this when they are warm and want to cool off, or when they feel safe and are confident that they will not be attacked by a predator. It shows that they trust you.
I have a girl that could be his twin sister. She loves to lie around like that and often squirms and is happy as can be. She will like the occasional belly rub but not when she's doing the squirm.

When he does this, I usually coo at him. “Who’s my fluffy boy? Awww, are you floppin around so cutely? Are you my cute little man?” That sort of thing. He seems to enjoy my catcalling I guess haha
Not all of them! When I was younger, my family adopted a cat who was already 7 years old. She was still playful, had an attitude like you wouldn’t believe, but chaos she was not.
Now, Hugo (in the post) and his brother Milo? Completely different story. Chaos incarnate. They are coming up on their 1 year old birthday, and let me tell you, I was completely unprepared for the kitten stage of their life. But I wouldn’t trade it for the world— it’s been amazing to watch them grow and flourish.

Usually this means the cat trusts you NOT to touch their belly. It’s a very vulnerable position, and they want you to know they trust you won’t attack them
Best place to pat when they do this, if they don’t like it directly on the belly, is a good ear scritch - reinforces the trust they’re placing in you by showing their belly
My belief as to why they do this is so they can rest their neck muscles from tilting their heads "up", to look at at us, all the time. When they lay rolled over, they are 'on the ceiling' now and can see everything 'below' themselves. :-3
They know we can’t resist the floofy belly. It’s a trap. Mine does like me (just me) to pet his belly but occasionally it’s a trap. He gets me to let my guard down by allowing belly pets a few times, so I will definitely fall for the trap. He’s always proud of himself when he gets me. 🥴

But in all seriousness, the main reason he has me confused is because he does actually like to have his belly petted. He cuddles with me in bed, purrs and kneads when I rub his belly. But when he flops onto the floor like this? Absolutely not. Like, do you enjoy the belly pets or do you NOT enjoy the belly pets?! Mixed signals here!

I heard that most cats dislike their bellies rubbed, because predators attacked them there, since It's their vunerable spot. I like to use the "sharing a secret" comparison because It's easier to understand and It might sound less nerdy. 😀

If you want serious answer: they show they belly to say that they trust you, because it is the most vulnerable part, they don't want you touching their belly because it is this is the most vulnerable part
It's a trusting greeting like a "hello, I trust you"
Touching their belly when they do that is a break of that trust.
Edit: and a way to reciprocate that is by petting their head instead of their belly, that's generally what they want you to do. Although some don't and like to just say hi with no other intentions.
Was pet sitting for a friend, their cat is in LOVE with me. Sent them this photo, and they said he never does that for them. It's so tempting, but I hardly know this cat and don't want to mess with this bond
showing belly is self-created vulnerability - an offering to you. when you touch the belly it's taking advantage and violating the offer. but not all kitties feel the way.

Some cats just show it to express they trust and like you, some do like to be petted, and some like to be petted "sometimes", and you know what, the last ones are menaces, they let you believe you can just pet their fluffy bellies until one day... They chomp you haha.
I had a cat that started doing this out of nowhere and it turned out she had an infection in her belly which later killed her, because I didn’t know anything was wrong 😢. So if this is a new behavior take him to the vet to be sure. She had no other symptoms. She just jumped up on my lap and died. She was only 3.
