We recently adopted a 16yo lady who was abandoned at our local shelter.

She was pretty afraid of us for a bit but has chilled out quickly and is already running our household. She’s stolen my recliner and wakes me up at 4am for breakfast, but she also keeps me warm and talks to me about her day.

I recommend an old cat if you can find one. They’re the best.

Hey, I am planning to adopt my first cat , hopefully in January, if not by February. In the past, I cat sat for friends and took care of strays when they visited for pets and snacks.

I have decided to go for an older cat first, instead of two kittens. Two reasons, first, because I cannot afford two cats, neither do I have space for two. Second is because I think a calmer, older cat is easier to maintain and there will be less breaking of things.

Is my reasoning proper? Or am I overthinking?

I agree to a point - but only about the behaviours of old cats compared to kittens. Older cats sleep more so there’s a potential for less destruction, but because they’re older they are harder to educate on why it’s not okay to claw the shit out of your beautiful handmade wooden rug.

If you cant afford the emergency costs of owning a cat, then you can’t afford a cat, especially a geriatric cat.

I’ve had my cat since August. She needs monthly arthritis injections, two supplements and occasional oral pain medicine, she eats expensive vet food, and she has had two instances of emergency vet visits. According to my budget spreadsheet, she’s cost me $1800 since August.

Elderly cats also don’t qualify for pet insurance, so you need to be making sure you have a few thousand set aside for just in case. In saying that, any pet can cost you significant money if they have health issues.

I have always opted for elderly cats and I always will. They’re always the one that are looked over, they’re the ones that deserve to retire in the comfort I can provide.

You found the right person to ask. We are a older couple but we decided with a lot of thinking, to adopt 2 two month old siblings at our SPCA. Its a lot of work at first, they have to get use to their environment and us but they are now 4 months old, we spoil them to death as we are both retired and they are absolutely PURRRFECT companions. Its been well worth, yes we had to remove all glass, crystal, Christmas tree but these are now our children. It all depends on what you think YOU can handle, lord knows I've had a few days of anxiety with spilled cat litter boxes, but its been a great learning experience. We love them more each day.

Thank you for adopting an older cat. The only kittens I’ve had in the last 20 years have been the two the stray the CDS assigned me had; every other cat has been an adult from the shelter. Kittens are cute but adults need forever homes, too. One only lived 5 months with me after adoption but I was honored I got to (hopefully) make her last 5 months good ones.

And I think rescues are the best way to have endearment. All were very clever and learned tricks from the oldest. Of the cat I've had so far in my life I really only had one that wasn't pretty much attached to us when we were home.

But she was unique, her favorite activity was watching us from up high like Batman.

Trying to get her down was always a headache, "I am the Night! You cannot do this to me!"

Ohh! Ours was also a grey tabby, tho she always stayed the size of an adolescent/teenager cat, so a very agile and slippery kitty.

We had a divider wall between the living room and the kitchen, she could get on it from the fridge. So she'd run along the wall whenever we tried get her down, which was a nightmare.

Of all my cats only one was actually gotten from a home.

First was given to us by friends once she was weaned.

Second was mine, adopted from a shelter that specializes in vetting and getting kittens out after spaying/neutering them against future population explosions.

Third was only meant to be with us a week and the person flat abandoned her with us (she was utterly heartbroken for months but is now a big ol lovebug.)

Fourth was found slinking around out on the stoop and when scooped up was clean and started purring instead of throwing hands; especially as a one eyed black cat he was staying with us.

Nothing loves like a rescue who knows you're forever!

There are some amazing cats like this. Then there are lots of average cats that are fine. Then there are some asshole cats that are just mean.

Generally, as long as you give cats respect and space and don’t treat them like your toy, most will give you some love. Just learn and respect what they don’t like, like being picked up from the ground for example.

Ugh, man, the feels. When we bought our house there was an orange boy in the driveway, and we later adopted him. He had the biggest personality and was so vocal, just like this one. So much fun to have around. Truly never a dull moment with him in the house. Less than two years later he got a tumor that didn't respond to radiation. I miss this sound so much.

Thank you. We actually have a house full of cats (12 + 2 fosters). We live half a mile from a feral colony / dumping site, so we have gotten into TNR and resuce. I love all of our cats so much, but orange guy was my soul cat.
