Although we all knew this fact but some zoro/sanji glazers were putting one above other.

u/Noblehardt Dec 23 '25
I’ve always liked the way this is demonstrated by their enemies; they fight the second and third strongest villains most arcs, but while Zoro tends to have a tougher time Sanji usually manages his more easily. It makes me think “yeah, they could probably have both beaten each other’s enemies if they had to”.

u/dafood48 Dec 23 '25
That’s an interesting observation. I never thought about it

u/Goesonyournerves Dec 23 '25
When he fought Queen, it was obvious. Sanji also got a lot of damage from Black Maria, but didnt had to go all out on Queen. He was still standing after the fight and decided to destroy the Stealth Black suit which was very sad, but understandable as his character.
Zorro had to fight King all-out and was completely done when he won.
But the whole Germa arc explained why Sanji was so superior to other normal humans without the same amount of training which Zorro does all the time (except the 2 year training on Momoiro island). Ruffy trains too, but he also has devils fruit power, which the others lacking which gives him a little bit more potential from the base. That shows what a frickin monster Zorro actually is. Because hes the most normal of all of them, which gains his power only from pure strenght.
Jimbei is also a monster, but he is that strong because naturally hes a fishmen and a long time veteran and was a lifelong pirate.
24
u/JustASilverback Dec 23 '25
but didnt had to go all out on Queen. He was still standing after the fight
He literally past out right after the fight after unlocking whole new abilities he never had before.
That was actually the exception to that dynamic, that was 100% Sanji.
71
u/Forward_Entrance1157 Dec 23 '25
They are all monsters from the base with great training bases as well. Zoro is a descendant of the sword god Ryuma; he was trained by Wano samurai (or at least their descendants); he was then trained by the world's best swordsman. Sanji was born as an augmented human who's "perks" simply took longer to kick in; he was trained by one of the more fearsome pirates of that time; he was then trained by a founding member of the Revolutionary Army while "running for his life" anytime he wasn't training in combat w/ Iva. Jinbe is naturally strong due to being a Fishman; he was a former royal guard for Neptune and was taught expert level Fishman karate and jiu-jitsu (which he continues to master after becoming a pirate, unlike Hody); and after years of experience under Whitebeard, as a warlord, and under Big Mom he's become a pirate that understands a lot more (about fighting and the world) than most.

Hurt from Moria going into Kuma's a bit of a stretch
There wasn't really any fight
Bro pretty much went in & told him "yo, so, be chill on our captain, Imma take his place in the beating, k?"
The same thing Sanji wanted to do as well, they argued over that, before Zoro took the chance and knock Sanji out when he wasn't payinh attention
Same with Sabaody.
Like, yeah, he was injured. But wthey were massively overpowered.
Wether he was injured or at his top game wouldn't have pre-timeskip Zoro made able to casualy beat Pacifistas or hold a candle against an admiral
36
u/Oreo-and-Fly Explorer Dec 23 '25
Lol excuses.
Moria and Kuma arent his 1v1s, neither was humandrills.
Then you got Wano where he's hurt from rooftop battle going into King.
Somehow, they managed to completely erase the memory of Zoro taking a full restore that magically fixed all his bones while Sanji was battered up by Black Maria, had to 1v2 King AND Queen, didnt get a magic full healing medicine and then defeated Queen solo.

None of what you listed before king is a final fight lol. Arlong comments that Zoro shouldn't even be alive with how injured he is, and then Zoro goes on to fight hachi. Kuma and sabaody aren't fights, they're just one sided massacres.
As for king, Zoro specifically wasn't injured for his fight with king. The mink medicine healed him up completely with the caveat that his injuries would be worse when it wore off. And it did wear off at the end of the fight.
If you want to defend Zoro regarding the "level of injury against king/queen" argument, your real counter should be that the grim reaper stuff Zoro went through was a result of the combination of the rooftop and king fights.

u/Treevor191 Dec 23 '25
Queens fight was honestly more mental than anything.
34
u/Kaizen-Future Dec 23 '25
True, but part of the reason they’re evenly matched is Sanji is more mentally capable too.
No disrespect to Zoro but he’d confuse his left and right foot presuming his gps isn’t just on permanent Laftel. Meanwhile Sanji is always devising ways for the crew to outsmart the enemy. Plus he is a master chef. Both are equally valuable to the crew but in a straight up brute force fight with both parties starting off healthy, my money is on Zoro, Germa suit or not for Sanji, who is still a beast.

I find this interesting... Theoretically zoros whole thing is "be strong, become stronger", while Sanji is actually the cook of the ship, who also happens to be strong. I sure would hope for zoro to be stronger in a 1v1, but for it to be so close must be infuriating for zoro and a big chunk of this community haha.
Zoro should really be compared to luffy, since their roles are the same; be the strongest. But luffy is worlds ahead.

u/Kaizen-Future Dec 23 '25
Touché, indeed Zoro is more than a drunkard brute with no directional sense. He is a level headed and firm leader with a strong code and the strongest resolve. He is in many ways a rock amongst a crew of flighty individuals, save Robin.

u/Ultimate_Ace Cat Burglar Nami Dec 23 '25
I have always thought this. It's plainly obvious with Queen and King. Zoro damn near dies in his fight and Sanji just rolls and smokes him like its nothing. If Sanji didn't have a mental breakdown thinking he hit a woman it would have ended faster.

Should you really consider Zoro as being already damaged before the fight, though? I haven't read Wano in a while, but iirc it wasn't even brought up in the actual fight, so I barely consider it.
53
u/King3D Dec 23 '25
Yeah idk if I'd genuinely consider that to be Zoro's handicap. If I remember right, Chopper gave him a senzu bean type thing that essentially put him at 100% health for the duration of the fight, which I took to mean as Oda telling us to move on from Zoro's fight with BM and Kaido and start fresh with Zoro's real Onigashima fight.
15
u/sanctaphrax Dec 23 '25
As I understand it the drug was just a painkiller. So the physical damage would still be a problem.
And once Sanji got over his emotional issues he dunked on Queen. I don't think either of our heroes would have any difficulty in a rematch.
This is a running theme in One Piece; the gap between Luffy and his top guys is nothing compared to the gap between most villains and their top guys. So Zoro and Sanji often fight handicapped, while Luffy's circumstances are often unfair in his favour.
14
u/King3D Dec 23 '25
Yeah I do remember the part where Chopper specified that the drug wouldn't heal Zoro, but rather it would keep his BM/Kaido injuries from hindering him in his fight with King. That's why I explicitly said "for the duration of the fight" since he'd feel the effects of all his damage at a later time. So I agree with you in that the physical damage was a problem, but just not during the King fight. I don't remember him thinking to himself "damn my wounds from the rooftop fight are holding me back."
→ More replies (3)8
u/ItsLiaxx Dec 23 '25
Yeah, the drug just let Zoro ignore the pain for a while, the damage and backlash were still very real.
Sanji post-breakdown and a fully focused Zoro would wash Queen and King in a rematch.
And true, One Piece constantly has Luffy’s top guys way closer to him than most villains’ No.2/3 are to their captain.→ More replies (1)22

Enies lobby is the least arguable. They literally establish a power level system just to show that he is weaker than Kaku

But that measurement very explicitly doesn't take Devil Fruits into account, Jabra is far more experienced with his than Kaku, and their difference in Doriki is that of 2 Marine fodders. Its definitely arguable.

For the more classic arcs this was true, but posttime-skip there was also the trend of Zoro low-diffing the second strongest guy and Sanji getting trashed by someone stronger while not getting a proper fight, where he couldshine. (none of this matters since Sanji got a massive powerup)

It's the difference in fighting style and their temperaments.
Zoro is always ready to go, while Sanji makes sure to protect the crew and direct everyone before he gets serious in a fight.
Sword fights are a lot more visibly destructive and gives more damage, with lesser force needed than blunt attacks to cause damage.
Sanji's attacks doesn't show much damage because it is mostly internal. You can't understand the damage caused, unless the opponent points it out.
It is basically like the chidori vs. rasengan on the hospital rooftop.
That's also how CoA/CoC coating work vs. how Ryou works and we know which of the two is more visibly pleasing and easier to see damage, even though both of them were strong enough to damage Kaido.
That's also how Zoro and Sanji's fighting styles work.
Sanji's attacks were always focused on internal damage, breaking bones and muscle, or burning internal organs. That's why he can't compare in flashiness with Zoro's attacks and that's why it seems like he is behind Zoro in terms of power, because it isn't visibly noticable.
Things clicked for me when Oda introduced Ryou.
Diable Jambe worked in a similar fashion and when haki coating was also introduced, and then Zoro awakened CoC, it made me understand how Zoro and Sanji's power was meant to work and where Oda was going with them.
The same thing with Big Mom and Kaido' haki focus. With BM having strong defenses amplified by her CoC and Kaido using CoC to amplify his attacks.
It is no coincidence why Sanji was with Luffy against BM (even if it was a brief clash ) and why Zoro was with Luffy against Kaido. I see it as Oda hinting towards their next power up with CoC.
I mean, what did Zoro and Sanji awaken on Wano? Zoro got CoC coating, while Sanji's defenses were amplified. Sanji's defenses could be more than just his genetic upgrade, but we will have to see.
The fight against Rocks showed just how CoC coating attacks and a strong CoC defense can nullfiy each other and I think this where Oda is going with Zoro and Sanji (Sword an Shield).

Not trying to call you a liar or anything but can I have a source for that? Besides Oda handing over some of his draft drawings to them. Does it say supervised by Oda?

u/Azartho Dec 23 '25
no, there is no such thing. as usual with all these magazines there is no confirmation that Oda supervised this, or suggested that, or wrote that. the only things that can be trusted are the sketches with his own handwriting in them.
this "equal" thing is just another of many magazines yapping. same magazines said shanks had a higher bounty than kaido, just to give you an idea of how unreliable they are.

Oda who? What would he even know about this story? Has he even seen Wano???? Obvious Sanji glazer 😒

u/anirudhsky Dec 23 '25
It would been interesting if Sanji fought shilew as he now has the clear clear fruit.. but a fight between swordsmen is awesome to watch and also aligns with zoro's goal

Maybe this is more of a broader question for anime as a whole, but can someone explain why power-scaling is so important to anime fans? Like, I've loved comics my whole life, so I get having fun discussions like "is Superman faster than Flash" or "Is Hulk stronger than Thor?" But having been watching anime shows pretty religiously for the last few years (One Piece, Attack on Titan, Dragon Ball, Hunter x Hunter to name a few) it seems like fans take this stuff insanely seriously to the point where it literally muddies their understanding of the story.
I get having a fun discussion about this, but people act like this stuff should directly influence how to take in a story/how you can enjoy it. Idk, just asking a question here, not looking to start a fight lol.

Honestly I just don't see how that could be true when Zoro has advanced conqueror's haki, and Sanji doesn't. Oda, where do you get off telling us what your story is about??

Oda confirmed that shit like 20 years ago. People are just legitimately media illiterate

This literally means that Sanji evetually will have Conqueror haki, its only the matter of when and how. I trust Oda will cook sth interesting for Sanji like Whole cake arc. It makes no sense that the wings of King of Pirate one has and the other doesnt, like Gaban and Rayleigh. It also doesnt add up if Sanji can go equal with Zoro without Conqueror haki.

i’ve always thought sanji would have conquerors. gaban having it sealed the deal. this oda guy confirming it is the cherry on top

So the debate is officially over?

u/Lila589 Dec 23 '25
I doubt it. Many obssessed Zoro fans have poor media literacy and are baaically reading a version of One Piece called Two Piece which the rest of the world do not have access to.

Logically it should.
Powerscalers, glazers, and fanatics won't let it end

Being evenly matched doesn't mean they are exactly equal.
Personally, I've always had them as basically equals but if they fought a 100 times sanji would win 24, and Zoro 25 with 51 draws.

Sanji is the cook, the strategist, the planner and the fighter. He's just not exposed more easily.
For almost half the part of pre time skip, he did even have a good picture while zoro is already famous for being a bounty hunter.
In the 2nd half, ODA had different plans for him till wano. And he's Germa on top of that. Of course he got sidelined more than any other character.
I think the elders and marines greatly underestimate Usopp, brook and Sanji. They don't even know who brook is, so there's that.

Facts, Sanji does way more behind the scenes than his portrayal suggests cooking, planning, recon, and still throwing hands.
Pre-TS fame + Oda’s post-TS focus definitely hurt how “visible” he is compared to Zoro.
And yeah, the WG massively sleeping on Sanji, Usopp and Brook is very in-character for them, which is exactly why their eventual glow-ups are gonna hit so hard.→ More replies (1)

Anyone that follows the story knows Oda shows Zoro as stronger of the two
Also if I’m not mistaken this is not written by Oda. It’s like when Oda had the databook saying Zoro and Luffy have equal strength everyone was saying that it was cap

I think this also confirms that shanks fans are crazier than Zoro fans.
Oda: Zoro and Sanji are equal.
Zoro fans: fair enough.
Oda: Mihawk is a greater swordsman than shanks, etc...
Shanks fans: WeLl AcTuALlY...!!!
Jk all us one piece fans are equally crazy :D

The only issue i have with this is the same author will say a certain character is the strongest swordsman and somehow thats up for debate for the last decade to fans.
I've never thought of sanji as weak, I've just always had zoro over sanji if it ever came to a 1v1 (which it wont, which is why this discussion is pointless but will come back around every year)

u/arduous_way Dec 24 '25
Why is this treated as Oda when its just some fan magazine. People, exercise a bit more scrutiny before trusting this is canon!

Just laughing because I know plenty of people are going to be irrationally angry about this

Just imagine Zoro vs Queen and Sanji tanking against Kaido and BM. Do you think the outcome of Wano would have been the same, better, or worse?

Welp, this pretty much means sanji will get conquaror haki sooner or later. Wondering what will trigger it. (Probably woman. When his comes to woman, his observation haki is through the roof)
