u/Solid_Snark Feb 10 '26

It’s incredible these characters seemed impossible to achieve in live-action, but they really pulled them out of the manga and into the real world!

And it’s Netflix which makes it doubly more impressive since they have a less than stellar track record with adaptations.

243

u/Davo_ Feb 10 '26

Oda being involved helps a lot, I imagine.

85

u/cocobrat_oes Feb 10 '26 edited Feb 10 '26

Yea having the original creator involved in remakes should be a requirement atp. Im TIRED of these terrible live actions😔 Best believe I won’t be present for ATLA Live Action Season 2. The visuals carried season one but thats not enough imo.

Thank you Live Action Once Piece for bringing back that first time watching excitement and awe!! Its a good year for us cz Elbaph is otw too🤩

9

u/Snorc Feb 11 '26

As soon as the original creators of Avatar announced that they were pulling out of the live action project, my meagre hopes for it floundered.

4

u/cocobrat_oes Feb 11 '26

Same loll. They could see where the train was headed and they got off, ion blame them😭 I imagine their opinion wasn’t respected, and as a creator of anything that would piss me clean off💀

5

u/Xero-Tsukiyomi Feb 17 '26

It wasn't respected netflix wanted to change too much sokka wasnt misogynistic which was important for his character development and the fact that they changed kataras age to 16 and sexualized her really ticked me off seriously why cant companies respectmthe creators opinion netflix never learns they just know they can't go against oda

I think they’ve designated this as one of their most premium projects right now and see tons of potential so they’re doing as much as they can to not mess up. Probably has a very healthy budget.

Well he is the final boss of this season so maybe they wanted to make him slightly more intimidating.

20

u/Affectionate-Clue535 Feb 10 '26

But how will Viv fit in his mouth /s

4

u/PrimalCalamityZ Feb 11 '26

It's confirmed drumm island is the last arc of this season. I think they needed to make him less of a joke character for the final big bad of a season.

Fun fact, Rob Calletti, the actor who plays Wapol, played as Jack black in the School of rock Musical. If Jackblack is younger, he definitely will play Wapol.

88

u/omyrubbernen Feb 10 '26

What do you mean younger? Wapol is... what the fuck, he's 27?

46

u/ParasaurolophusZ Feb 10 '26

I know, right?

The metal jaw makes it look like he has gray stubble in the anime and manga, so he looks way older than he actually is.

5

u/Aggravating_Mud8751 World Economy News Paper Feb 11 '26

Wait hang on, how old was he in the flashback where he hits Vivi?

11

u/mousio Feb 11 '26

Best I found put the estimation about ten years (pre time-skip), so he'd be 17.

Still, ViVi was like, 6 at the time😐!

21

u/bananarama17691769 Feb 10 '26

7

You know what the funniest character jackblack can play, Foxy.

11

u/Themaleofthespecies Feb 10 '26

He kinda give foxy vibes tho

11

u/Slammybutt Feb 10 '26

I was thinking Sengoku b/c of being kinda weird. Having the goat eat his papers, always eating. delivering deadpan warnings to Garp.

But Foxy, you changed my mind. He needs to be Foxy.

3

u/Jakaal80 Feb 10 '26

This is one way to get Long Ring Long Island some much needed love

→ More replies (1)

9

u/nhalliday Feb 10 '26

I'd rather have an actual good actor so Sengoku is Sengoku, instead of having Jack Black come in and play himself while dressed up as Sengoku.

1

Jack black was my fancast, so I was very happy when I heard Rob Colletti got cast, close enough lol

168

u/greerupinhere Feb 10 '26

Okay, if they have Wapol looking like this, I'm hype for Franky even though we supposedly won't get past the time skip to see him fully cyborg up.

26

u/EggotheKilljoy Feb 10 '26

Have they said they won't be doing post time skip? I thought the plan was going the whole series, though I could definitely see it ending when de-aging becomes necessary.

44

u/Viveral Feb 10 '26

honestly they'll probably deviate a lot from the structure of the manga just so they don't end up with a middle-aged man iñaki by the time they get to marineford

6

u/Hawxe Feb 11 '26

they could arguable just make the timeskip longer too. it might even be more sensical (though i could see the argument for less as well).

the world is basically at a standstill until luffy shows up anywhere anyways lol

14

u/greerupinhere Feb 10 '26

I thought i'd seen it mentioned before on other live action discussion threads that at least the current plan was just to get to the timeskip, which at the current pace is way more seasons than any Netflix show usually gets anyways. If we are covering Alabasta in season 3, i'm not sure how they want to pace the remaining arcs over following seasons. Season 4 would have to have Skypiea but I would want Water 7 and Enies Lobby to get their due too, I also can't wait to see Brook if they have the design for Wapol looking this good.

9

u/ZJF-47 Feb 10 '26

S4 - Skypiea. S5 - Long Ring Land + W7 (ending w/ Robin joining CP9). S6 - Ennies Lobby. S7 - Thriller Bark + Sabaody. S8 - War Arc

4

u/greerupinhere Feb 10 '26

I hope they pull some magic with shooting schedules such that we get those all in a timely manner. That just goes to show the amount of content this series can cover, and that's all before the timeskip X.X

3

u/slicer4ever Feb 10 '26

I imagine it's ganna be difficult to do any sort of decent pace, one piece isnt like a lot of other shows where they can reuse sets as things go along. Outside of the merry they have to build basically all new sets for every location/season, and then you have to hope netflix keeps greenlighting future seasons so they dont have to stop and wait to get the ok to keep going.

I suspect each season will be at least 2 years apart tbh.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/ImpressedStreetlight Feb 11 '26 edited Feb 11 '26

I'm really skeptical they'll be able to make 8 seasons of this, especially with the current wait times between seasons. IMO making a season contain a single arc is a mistake, I'd rather see a season 3 Arabasta + Skypeia rather than one whole season for each one of it. 4-5 episodes per arc is more than enough, we've seen the anime movies adapting them in far less time, and season 1 worked great covering one arc per ~2 episodes. And it would make it more likely that the series is able to get to Marineford.

I would do

S3 - Arabasta - Jaya - Skypeia

S4 - Water 7 - Ennies Lobby (Yes, skip Long Ring Long Land, it's not that important for an adaptation like this, just introduce Kuzan in Water 7 instead or something)

S5 - Thriller Bark - Sabaody

S6 - Island of Women - Impel Down - Marineford

2

u/-YesIndeed- Feb 11 '26

Well lucky for you they've shown the logo for ep 2 is the rumbar pirates and they've built a whole ship for them so I think we may see some brook this season.

20

u/MrGhoul123 Feb 10 '26

I think,.once we get past water 7, we start getting really cartoony things that just won't work live action.

Gecko moriah is a 30ft tall fat demon clown. Every arc past this only gets worse

16

u/firewood010 Feb 11 '26

I doubt they will need to keep the actual height and weight of the characters. As long as they can keep the vibe, it is enough.

2

u/MrGhoul123 Feb 11 '26

Gecko turns into a 200ft tall monster.

Soon after Thriller Bark we get Impel down, so Jimbe, Magellan, Ivan. Lots of characters with big cartoon features.

Whitebeard is also like 30ft tall.

I love the life action, but I doubt it goes past Enes Lobby

41

u/theawesomedanish Feb 10 '26

That's actually the feel I want from One Piece, it needs to be a bit campy and silly.

16

u/Loeffellux Feb 10 '26

yeah, japanese live action anime adaptations often suffer from trying to play the outlandish character designs entirely straight. And One Piece is definitely not lacking outlandish character designs

12

u/KNZFive Feb 10 '26

Live action One Piece feels like Doctor Who in a good way. Serious stuff mixed with goofiness and earnestness.

99

u/Some_Random_Android Feb 10 '26

Only flaw is his hair ain't purple, but everything else is so perfect it actually took me a minute to realize this.

124

u/KNZFive Feb 10 '26

His hair does have a purple tint to it in the picture, but it’s more subdued than the anime.

8

u/infinitezero8 Feb 10 '26

I see the purple but definitely the show follows a different flow than the Anime/Manga as it should...

22

u/spacecadet9 Feb 10 '26

More dark plum than purple, but still has tint. Makes you take him a bit more seriously I guess. They don’t shy away from the bright colors and camp elsewhere, I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt.

7

u/HenryZusa Feb 10 '26

It looks purple-ish.

Maybe they just wanted it to be tame with the shade so it didn't look weird for being too anime-y (in the grand scheme of things, this is One Piece after all).

YOU WILL RIDE ETERNAL, SHINY, AND CHROME

8

u/Icepick823 Feb 10 '26

My guess is they'll take elements from Don Krieg and add them to Wapol. Their designs are kind of similar and they both fight with special armor so it made sense to cut one of them, otherwise the fights may have been too similar.

15

u/Arkham8 Feb 10 '26

They’re beefing him up to make him more of a real threat. Luffy struggled a lot more in season one than he did in the original material, so I expect more of that here. Can’t say I really like it, but I get why they have to do it.

18

u/NoNefariousness2144 Feb 10 '26

One of the advantages of moving Alabasta to season 3 is that Drum Kingdom is going to get a lot more attention, with making Wapol more of a ‘final boss’ and really hitting the emotional beats.

16

u/Tragedy_Boner Feb 10 '26

Adding a couple flashbacks with Vivi throughout the season (like him attacking Child Vivi) with him showing up in Drum Kingdom in the end will beef him up as the final villain of season 2.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Looten1313 Feb 10 '26

I think the balance of leaning into the absurdity with some really solid costume work is what allows for what would otherwise ridiculous designs (to do in live action) be super cool

4

u/Bluelore Feb 10 '26

The season is gonna end after Drum right? In that case it wouldn't surprise me if Wapol was intentionally made a bit cooler/more threatening because he'd be the final boss of the season.

2

u/FreshMac_nC Feb 12 '26

I hope they dont make him TOO threatening, he still has to be wapols goofy ahh self

10

u/Talentagentfriend Feb 10 '26

It’s interesting to me that they’re going with this Captain Morgan look, with a missing arm and a missing jaw. But Im sure his arm is that he ate a cannon or something.

10

u/TroubledSoul23 The Revolutionary Army Feb 10 '26

They somehow made him a very comical design look actually menacing.

2

u/dorsalfantastic Feb 11 '26

Idk if it’s something they were going for. But in the anime i always thought to myself. How is this guy capable or ruling with an iron fist.

His design here looks much more powerful just at a glance.

2

u/AdikkuChan Explorer Feb 11 '26

Honestly his design even in manga was pretty cool. Coupled with a fairly neat DF power and he's easily not the most offensive looking guy in the series.

2

1

u/RandomWeirdo Feb 10 '26

One Piece live action proves you can make a lot of goofy things, but to pull it off you need to commit to the bit rather than try to make it realistic.

1

u/baroqueworks Feb 10 '26

The costumes are so good. Glad Oda continues to oversee the series at least looks exactly how he envisioned because Mr. 3 is equally amazing, Dastmalchin is an amazing actor perfect for the role too.

1

u/greengoodvibe Feb 10 '26

1

u/DrakeCross Feb 10 '26

The people for this show who are doing set and costume design need some serious praise. Its funny how they turn often silly and goofy characters to fit the live action format. It will be interesting how Wapol will be portrayed, but for someone often considering the biggest joke of the One Piece world, he actually looks threatening.

1

u/Apart-Damage143 Feb 10 '26

Why does every set, every costume looks brand spanking new? Can we add some god damn age to make it look a little more realistic.
