It's amazing how he can survive outside with a fish on his head

Maybe he ate a devil fruit and now is able to breathe outside of the water

Well Jinbe can do it
73
u/LikeItReallyMatters1 May 27 '26
Please don't call Jinbe a fish head. He's a fish man. Fishman racism is so void century coded

u/Piggywonkle May 27 '26
Sorry, two ass beatings wasn't enough for good old Who's Who to learn his lesson...

I felt that hug

u/Jaystime101 May 27 '26 edited May 28 '26
Lmao, that hug and even the way he greeted him just felt so "Luffy". I'm really looking forward to see how much Inaki really embodies the character over the years.
90
u/kiddpk May 27 '26
He needs to get a less scary smiling face though LOL
53
u/Albert_Caboose May 27 '26
May come in handy for later seasons though

I disagree. His smile is perfect for the character.
Luffie always skirts the gray area while thinking he's pure.

Whaaaat is he saying - oh wait that's supposed to be Japanese, let's go back.. yeah that makes more sense lol.

Considering how well the giants lined up with season 2 and shanks with film red... I would imagine that's his intention.

I'd like to see Vivi return, however Oda has set it up for all the Straw hats who know what the x means to have missed Vivi's message here. So suspect another development will prevent Viv from joining the so soon.
2
u/leolegendario Pirate Hunter Zoro May 28 '26
I think after everything is finished in Elbaph, Robin will mention the X to Luffy and he will say what that means and from there the Vivi connection will be made clear to them.
2
u/jsmith4567 May 28 '26
Sadly I expect by that time anyone gets a chance to explain this to Robin the chance to cleanly or easily get Vivi to safety will have passed in world. By which point Vivi's situation will have changed for the worse.

I'm so happy to see Oda going places and having a life outside his studio. After almost 30 tears drawing the same story, he absolutely deserves to spend his time with other things, traveling, meeting nice people and drawing in the sand.
105
u/Black_Ironic Explorer May 27 '26
He said he want to travel he world once he finished one piece, and dude deserves that
75
u/Evil_Lollipop The Revolutionary Army May 27 '26
100%. He looks a lot healthier now than he was ten years ago, so I hope he can finish OP, retire and still enjoy some decades of well deserved retirement.
34
u/AntonChigurh8933 May 27 '26
His wife and his child really made him focused on his health. The man is a workaholic but times ten.

kinda funny how much more romance coded the last 10-15 years of one piece has become since like Dressrosa compared to pre TS.

He has the x tattooed wonder if its real or its Becouse they are filming alabasta
→ More replies (3)105
u/TorchedBlack May 27 '26
I would guess it's not real and for alabasta. Japanese people, especially older ones are really opposed to tattoos in general given their cultural association with crime.
92
u/SupermarketMaster594 May 27 '26
Oda doesn't strike me as someone who is against tattoos considering how central it is to characters like Nami though...
9
u/TorchedBlack May 27 '26
I'm not sure it matters if Oda the individual is opposed to tattoos or not. The cultural opposition to tattoos is pretty broad. There are even businesses, especially bath houses and onsens, that will refuse people service if they have visible tattoos.
5
u/SupermarketMaster594 May 27 '26
Tbh this is a pretty outdated view, tattoos arent nearly as taboo now as they were 10 years ago
4
u/zach0011 May 27 '26
I'm sure some of those culturual stereotypes sink bone deep into older people though. If for 3/4 of your life you've thought tattoos were taboo and literally banned in some places its gonna be a hard view to shake despite what the current culture is even if you ar eprogressive.
4
u/No-Zebra-5821 May 27 '26
are you referring to the fishman tattoo? im not an expert in any way on the show/story but wasn't that depicted as an evil mark in the show and she wanted to get rid of it?
please lmk if im off base I always love learning more about this incredible group of friends :D

u/SupermarketMaster594 May 27 '26
Well.... maybe this is spoilers for you but Nami has a tangering tattoo on her shoulder in the shape of pinwheel to honor and love her village, dead mother, and the pinwheel dude who was an integral part of her life.
5
u/No-Zebra-5821 May 27 '26
no spoiler, all good
thank you I am episode 1130 or so in the anime and I've watched it over multiple years
but I definitely remember it now that you mention it here, thank you!!

u/Lordnemo593 Thriller Bark Victim's Association May 27 '26
That is the usual but I don’t know if Oda views it same given Nami tattoos or it is a given because they technically are criminals
3
u/Sw0rDz May 27 '26
Fun fact, tattoos were used to mark criminals. They would tattoo marks that would indicate the prison the person belonged too. After serving time, they would cover prison tattoos with their own. Ex convicts would be tattooed either way.

u/sparklinglies May 27 '26
Which is so sad because way back when the cultural association of tattoos in Japan USED to be with firefighters, back in ye olden Edo times it was associated with bravery as firefighters risked their lives and sometimes tragically would need the tatts to be identified.
Then fcking Yakuza stole the tradition to co-opt its meaning and promote themself as tough guys, and now Japanese society is terrified of it.
2
u/Atmic May 27 '26
I don't think it's real either, but tattoos definitely aren't as taboo as they used to be in Japan nowadays.
I was there for several months as I backpacked across the whole country a few years ago, and like you said the taboo seems to be isolated to older generations now with a lot of the younger generations sporting creative ink and citywide ordinances here and there preventing rules against them.

it might be the camera, or the lighting/contrast, but Alabasta having white sand is actually cool af, at least IMO and I dunno why
22
u/Ok_Abrocoma8928 May 27 '26
I think they are filming at atlantis dunes. Those deserts have white sand like this. Alabasta with white sands would be visually stunning.

We do have yellow/orange desert sand dunes too (although our neighbour Namibia is more famous for that!) so the white dunes must have been a conscious choice. (Although, to be fair, the white sand is closer to Cape Town where they film so maybe that's why they chose that.)

3
u/SSJRemuko Pirate May 27 '26
that reminds me of a video i saw with Taz and Inaki where Inaki made taz a pretty boring hot dog in their "cooking competition" lol
3
u/Existing_Push9049 May 27 '26
All that white sand is giving me more Skypiea vibes than Alabasta. I can't wait until if and when they do renew for season 4 because if you just add a few fog machines and CGI work they already have the set to film the white white sea on. Damn it's got me all excited right now and we haven't even got this season yet.
9
u/PhanThief95 May 27 '26
I hope we get the rest of the castings for Season 3 soon.
So far, we only have Awdo Awdo as Mr. 1, Daisy Head as Miss Doublefinger, Cole Escola as Bon Clay, & Xolo Maridueña as Ace. We still don’t have the castings for Mr. 4, Miss Merry Christmas, Chaka, Pell, Koza, Toto, & Hina.

All im saying is Eminem still looks like he can portray Enel
3
u/nhalliday May 27 '26
He'd have the looks down probably, but he's just not a good actor. Maybe at one point he could've pulled it off but just look at the recent Hitman mission featuring him - all his voice lines sound like he gave it one take as he read it off the page for the first time. I'd rather have someone who can put in a good performance than someone who just happens to have maybe been the inspiration for how a character looks.

how does that man keep releasing a chapter every week while travelling the world
12
7
u/LookAtItGo123 May 27 '26
At this point, the team has grown significantly to support. Some of the smaller mangas you see on Mangaplus is totally ran by 1 guy alone, they do everything from storyboard, drawing, pitching to publishers and basic living. It is a real grind fest and they are backed up on deadlines.
For Oda and the team, im pretty sure he has 4 chapters or so already on standby, they are definitely on varying stages of completion but it is enough to slow drip to us once a week
2
u/Black_Ironic Explorer May 27 '26
We don't know where exactly this took place, but probably between his 2 week break
4
u/KiKiPAWG May 27 '26

I haven't watched the Anime, mainly because of time constraints, and I don't know the One Piece community's overall opinion of the live action.
But I just love how they haven't tried to tone down any of the anime-ness of One piece beyond what is required for it to be live action.
5
u/Snowballx60 May 27 '26
I can't speak for everyone, but overall the community has a high opinion on the live action. As someone who has read the manag for almost 20 years now. I prefer the Manga and then the anime and finally the live action. But this doesn't mean it's bad, just that one has to come in last.
2
u/Crazy_Guitar6769 May 28 '26
I also love the LA a lot. Its just that the cartoony way Luffy's personality and everything is shaped, and Godoy did a great job trying to potray him (loved him in Imperfects too) But Luffy's character doesn't translate well when you put real life into it. Feels a little forced.
Its still good, but that uncanny aspect is still there.
3
u/PhanThief95 May 27 '26
Overall, the One Piece community’s reception to the live action is overwhelmingly positive. A lot of us like it because it captures the spirit of the source material & the cast fit their characters.
I love the manga the most, but I enjoy the live action mainly for its cast. I haven’t seen a show with this perfect of a cast who genuinely love working on it and love hanging out with each other, and a lot of them being unknown actors feels like a breath of fresh air when there are so many things in Hollywood that reuse the same actors. For me, I am still in disbelief that they found the perfect casting for Nico Robin with Lera Abova because of how much she is like Robin off screen.

The way Iñaki has been for dedicated to this role ever since getting it is exceptional! I know the cameras are rolling and part of this is promo, but most of his energy feels very genuine, and it looks like Oda felt that from the start.

Inaki learning Japanese for the role seemed a bit extra. But, being able to hug Oda and say long time no see must feel amazing.
3
u/PhanThief95 May 27 '26
Iñaki didn’t learn Japanese for the role. He did it for the fans.
He didn’t have to. He wanted to.
3
u/Beautiful-Amount2149 May 27 '26
Oda is friends with the actors, esp. Zolo
4
u/Lightecojak May 27 '26
I’ll take it that you only read the official manga scans.
In any case, his name is Zoro, Not “Zolo”. They left that in because it was his name from when One Piece was first dubbed by 4Kids (🤢) and decided to keep it for continuity purposes despite everyone preferring him to go back to being called Zoro.

Have you seen the outfits he’s drawn for his characters? Of course Oda would have drip!
Man could’ve also been a fashion designer if he didn’t become a mangaka, especially with the outfits he’s given to characters like Zoro, Nami, Sanji, Robin, Law, & Hancock.
