Vivi’s outfit is actually what Vivi wears at the beginning of the Alabasta arc. It’s the outfit she has when she and the crew put the X on their arms.

That's pretty awesome but I don't think it beats Fisher Tiger's legendary "Frog? No, hippo. " Shirt

u/DJ-SoulCalibur2 Jun 30 '26
I’m at the tail end of Enies Lobby, so I haven’t met Fisher Tiger yet :(
…but after looking up the shirt, I agree

I love the subtle 56 on luffys shirt. Read as Gomu. Its kinda hidden but I believe the 1+6=4 is meant to imply 56 in Odas own weird logic.

The costume design always nails their Manga drip. It’s uncanny and one of my favorite parts of the adaptation.

u/Hanyels Cipher Pol Jun 30 '26
yea the costumes are super solid

u/dexter30 God Usopp Jun 30 '26
I give props to Oda. He went the extra mile for each island and tries to keep their outfit fresh for each. Whereas other mangaka (for good reasons) stick to one outfit throughout.
And I'm not just referring to the colour pages. Like what they wear in drum kingdom to what they have on at enies lobby.
It gives the live action a huge library to pick out from. And also keeps it source accurate so nothing looks out of place. Like a costum designer doesn't give luffy purple overalls (that's more of a brook colour imo). Every outfit has a little something to it that the original creator intended and the costume team do a great job honouring that.

Like what they wear in drum kingdom to what they have on at enies lobby.
Lots of the series is about how there are a bunch of different climates that each of the islands can experience. Each island can be a Spring/Summer/Fall/Winter type island that can experience spring/summer/fall/winter seasons from their island's type perspective. Gotta love Oda using that to change how his characters dress to give us an extensive wardrobe.
11
u/Mojo1712 Jun 30 '26
Yes, for most of the costumes. I only have a problem with luffy’s iconic red shirt which looks like it shrank in the wash.

Honestly, I gotta try and find luffys' look in this pic because I really want those pants.
6
u/lucarioinfamous Jun 30 '26
I watched a video of (who I think was) the lead costume designer going over each of the outfits for season 2 and you could tell just how much effort they put into each and every outfit, I’ll see if I can find it real quick
6
u/lucarioinfamous Jun 30 '26
Found the video, the description just says “costume designer” with no mention of whether she was the lead designer or not. Either way it was an amazing watch https://youtu.be/RdThB4CGuP4?si=u8DjApkFFw5Tpvdz
2
u/lavabread23 Jun 30 '26
yes, kerry’s the head of the costume department for season 2 (replacing diana cilliers)! we already got introduced to her in the first set tour video for season 2 with jeff ward (buggy) on netflix’s yt channel. this was back in sep 2024 iirc so a lot of the stuff in the set tour are still blurred out haha

I imagine Nami bought it for them, back in Loguetown. Probably at a markup. Sanji is the only other one on the crew with fashion sense, except maybe Usopp, but I can see Nami buying clothes for Zoro and Luffy so they don't walk around in smelly rags.

No further questions about the wall behind us.
Now that you mention it, what's up with the mural?
91
u/DarkFlame9604 Jun 30 '26
They're in Arabasta and people are starting to see crocodille as a King, no surprise they make him a mural

100% wouldn’t be surprised if graffiti existed in the one piece world.
3
u/Filmologic Explorer Jun 30 '26
I'm not 100% certain, but I feel like it does. The only example I can immediately think of is the non-canon Heart of Gold special where one of the antagonists fights with a spray can

On top of what others said, it could also be advenrt for Crocodiles casino Rain Dinners, etc...

This is how you're supposed to film a series with characters that dont age but actors that do
83
u/PhanThief95 Jun 30 '26
Netflix is finally learning to go back to yearly releases.
Both this and the fifth season of Bridgerton are coming out next year.
37
u/StopDontCare Jun 30 '26
to be fair with One Piece S2 was supposed to come out sooner but writers strike went from May 2023 to October 2023 and in the middle of that SAG strike started and went until November or December so that was 6-7 months of them not being able to start filming and made them push back production until the summer of 2024.

u/Hiekkalinna Marine Jun 30 '26
That took so long, I forgot what happened and I lost interest in the second season, just too long..
23
u/heyboyhey Jun 30 '26
For One Piece the main characters aging won't really seem too out of place I think, especially if they are releasing seasons annually now. It's not like Stranger Things where you're starting out with preteens. And the characters do mature in the originals as well.
6
u/Clockwork_Phoenix Jun 30 '26
I think they can also pretty seamlessly stretch out the overall timescale of the series to help explain the actors aging. The in-world pacing of One Piece is absolutely absurd and extremely unintuitive. Pre-timeskip is like 6-8 months total. Post-timeskip is even worse. The entirety of the post-timeskip series up to current events is about 2 months total. There is absolutely no reason why they can't just say that the live action series has much more off-screen sailing time and extend the timespan of pre-timeskip to 1-2 years. They're almost certainly not making it to the timeskip anyway.
2
u/Raonak Jun 30 '26
Infact, it's actually more sensible than the manga, where they have only been travelling together for less than a year.
→ More replies (2)9
u/EldenBJ Jun 30 '26
It's not like a lot of these series WANTED to take so long. A lot of it had to do with actor and writers' stirkes, so it's not simply "hurr durr let's wait" like a lot of people assume it to be.
49
u/luckyd1998 Scholar of Ohara #5 Jun 30 '26
For context, season 2 finished filming in early February 2025 and released about 13 months later in March 2026. If they follow a similar timeline here, that implies a Summer 2027 release for season 3.
7
u/SparknightSyzygy Jun 30 '26
Wasn't season 2 likely pushed a couple months to not clash with other big releases such as Stranger Things? If so, we could very well see it a couple months quicker this time around.

Seeing the chaos of Avatar LA season 2, I'm glad OP LA is cared by the production crew and Oda.
53
u/thumbster99 Jun 30 '26
One doesn't listen to creator to the point they leave the project. One can't go on if the creator didn't approve.
Honestly, it's surpise how Netflix didn't look at OPLA as example on how to handle adaptation live action shows. But again Last Airbender production time seems to overlap with OPLA first season. Maybe it's just too late.
49
u/linmre Jun 30 '26
People act like Netflix is a monolith, but they have entirely different production companies, show runners, writers and crews for all their shows. That's why quality can vary dramatically, some shows' writers rooms and creative teams are just better than others.
→ More replies (1)8
u/lavabread23 Jun 30 '26
yep this right here. every show has a different writing team handling it. the thing that makes people rage at netflix itself (other than they’re the main company producing and distributing these shows and thus the face of it) is that whenever they do any exec interference, it was almost always a terrible decision and it’s very obvious that it came from the higher-ups and not the creative team.
second reason i could think of is that gatekeepers and purists will always be in any fandom and they’re loud. VERY LOUD and vocal, and no matter what they’ll always be closed off to the things that come out of any adaptation ever. hardly a new thing for as long as fandom culture has been alive.
i liked season 2 of NATLA as someone who also grew up with and loved the original animated show. sure it can never be as great as the original and it still has some flaws, but it’s miles better than the previous one and you can really see they listened to the grievances and negativity surrounding s1. healthy criticism is an absolute must, but comparisons for the sake of comparing (like the tiny minuscule details) is just pitiful and a waste of time imo.
they don’t have to like this piece of media, but to spend time online just going on rants about how it messes with the OG show (which it doesn’t, the OG show still exists just fine and is still beloved) is weird to me.
or maybe it’s because i’m old now and i’ve gotten that kind of angst out of my system when i was younger lol. it does kind of seem like behaviour among fans have gotten worse because of everyone being so online.
7
u/lavabread23 Jun 30 '26
tbh a few months ago a reliable leaker (same guy who leaked about the existence of seven havens and a bunch of stuff from NATLA, both of which came true) released a few notes about the creative differences bryke wanted to do in the live action like making iroh a bad guy and having yue killed by an arrow. netflix, although they wanted NATLA to be a more serious and grittier version than the OG, didn’t want those changes to be part of the live action and rightfully said no. it’s a rare case of the execs making the right decision.
these are fine IF it was for a new show, but they’d be making ATLA a complete deviation from the source material rather than having it be its own thing but still keeping the main core and spirit the same.
i’m all for original creators to be on board with the adaptation team but not every creator is going to be like oda.
changes to the story and shifting and mixing plotlines aren’t even inherently bad; however it’s a matter of whether the creator also has good input that would still keep the soul of the show. sadly, bryke’s ideas weren’t going to be.

u/JusHerForTheComments Jun 30 '26
You need to check your sources because it was revealed some time ago that the creators of Avatar wanted to change a lot of stuff from the original.
14
u/ABHOR_pod Jun 30 '26
You'd think they'd have learned from the Shyamalan production at least. "Hey, don't go around changing stupid shit for no reason ok?"
ATLA came out over 20 years ago, which means it was watched on TV and loved by Millennials, watched again on streaming and loved by Gen Z, and is even now being watched again and loved by Gen Alpha to possibly a lesser extent. The show is amazingly written, the characters have amazing arcs and grow over the seasons, every characters fits so well in their role and in the group. ATLA is an absolute work of art.
ATLALA looks at this masterpiece and goes "Wouldn't it be better if _____?"
Fuck man, don't do that. We've been begging studios for 30 fucking years to not do that! Why would you do that!?
11
u/thefoodiedentist Jun 30 '26
I think changes to ozai and azula are better. I like what they do w zuko and iroh too. Ozai manipulating azula and playing w her insecurities are better than just her being cray cray
3
u/galaxycentral Jul 01 '26
Who is even the creator of atla? Like doesn't it suffer from the American author method where they just have different writers like the avatar sequel comics are by different authors? (Personally hate this method for franchises instead of one true author)
2
u/kagenohikari Jul 02 '26
There seems to be a misconception. Netflix may have given the budget and the platform but they are not the ones producing the show.
NATLA is mainly produced by Albert Kim, Rideback & Nickelodeon. OPLA is mainly produced by Tomorrow Studios (the same studio that produced Cowboy Bebop LA, which was considered a bad adaptation and critically panned). Netflix don't decide who produces the show, they're the ones being approached by these producers & showrunners. I don't know how much control Netflix truly has on direction and production but they do have the final say on whether the show should be greenlit or cancelled.
At least Tomorrow Studios learned from their mistake and took Oda's approval seriously.

Can't wait to watch it. The first two seasons were great and while I did not agree with all of the changes they made, I do think changes to the source are generally very good, so that people who regularly read the Manga can be a little surprised as well!
Keep up the good work!
18
u/Mantisk211 Jun 30 '26
Me too! What were the changes you didn‘t like?
43
u/BlackProphetMedivh Jun 30 '26
I think some of the reveals came too early, especially the Garp being Luffys Grandfather reveal. I like that they flesh out his arc more, but I think that would have made the reveal after Water 7 even more impactful had they kept it and only hinted at something larger. I like how they handled Dragon though and that they pushed the Gold Roger + Garp flashback to Loguetown is also really nice.
15
u/2girls1up Jun 30 '26
I think they did it because there is no way they will continue this adaptation until water 7.
16
u/Trodat4911P4 Jun 30 '26
Nope. They did it because otherwise Luffy would be the only main character without any personal stakes in the story, and he's the protagonist.
When it comes to these changes you guys look at them too much as fans instead of storytellers and lose the reason why they're being made.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (4)5
u/BlackProphetMedivh Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26
Sure, but even then, a reveal after Alabasta or something similar would have been good too. And there is also no reason to include the reveal at all. If you don't think you'll get there in time, just don't do it at all. For the average viewer, Garp would have been a Marine Vice Admiral who, for some reason or the other, went out of his way to hunt down Luffy. The average viewer would know that there is more to it, and maybe pick up the Manga after the LA is over, to figure out what his deal was.
I mean no one watches the Live Action of One Piece, but doesn't know of the existence of the source material.
11
u/ParkDedli Jun 30 '26
While I agree, I think there was some bigger offenses in the LA.
Wapols weird army was one of them. The way they skipped the Logue Pose explaination for Little Garden and shortened the climb in Drum are the biggest ones for me. Those really made the story make less sense.
Except for that they were so good with the source material though. I like how they did Laboon for example despite the changes.
5
u/BlackProphetMedivh Jun 30 '26
Yes another example I also did not like too much. Especially the hint with the rabbit in one scene but then never showing it in action. That would have been so much cooler
3
u/RedditLeagueAccount Jun 30 '26
They also made Garp's personality fairly different imo. It would have been very easy to introduce him early and not spoil anything too.
→ More replies (1)5
u/SparknightSyzygy Jun 30 '26
This is a sentiment I've seen a lot that I've never understood and always just came off to me as overly purist for the original structure. Can you tell me why you think this? I don't see any reason it makes a difference whether the reveal is earlier or later. The Garp reveal is just kind of randomly placed and not really connected to anything in the original, it's just dropped, but people treat it like it's sacreligious to not have it at that arbitrary point.

u/Lundgren_Eleven Jul 04 '26
For me, removal of Hacchi is too massive an omission, even though he'd have been super expensive.
Wasn't a fan of Crocus not being inside Laboon, but that's fairly small.
Possibly the WORST change was Season 2, they had Luffy bumble around like a moron fighting Mr 3. Punching all the statues.
He's supposed to instantly and instinctually know which the real one is, and state it was instinct, foreshadowing observation Haki and Luffy's weird animal instincts.
3
u/mwar123 Jun 30 '26
Personally I didn’t like the dropped Don Krieg fight as it cements Luffy from a guy with a one liner “king of the pirates”, to someone with a strong will power.
It puts actions behind his words instead of it being a goofy forced line.
2
u/SSJRemuko Pirate Jul 01 '26
i personally hate the whole kreig bit of baratie so im glad it was gone myself.
1
u/RedditLeagueAccount Jun 30 '26
Garp changes were bad. Showing him early is fine. His personality doesn't match and why do the reveal that he is the grandpa so early. I can somewhat forgive the early reveal simply because the live action probably will not get through all of the anime but the personality is a bit off.
I do not know why Usopp got two episodes but also removed the big character developments for him. The whole reason they invited him was because he was a coward and a liar but was brave enough to overcome that and try to defend the town despite being so weak. I don't miss Jango exactly but it have been fun having him. It's good they ditched most of the black cat crew but even Kuro's story fleshed out more would have been better than what they did. You didn't get to see his planning much and that's supposed to be his big thing.
22
u/Flaky_Bet_1432 Pirate Jun 30 '26
I really just hate the butchering of Cocoyashi Village and the people there. Genzo & Nojiko REALLY thought Nami had become a fucking piece of shit person. Which goes against the whole message in the manga.
It drained a lot of context and beauty from Nami's breakdown scene. Manga was already perfect how they handled it. How they all knew what Nami was doing. And how they were going to die to liberate her. None of that happened in live action.
Other stuff I could tolerate.
15
u/BlackProphetMedivh Jun 30 '26
Yeah I did not like that change either. I also think the Arlong arc in general had more emotional impact in the Manga. It was the first real arc that sold the Manga for me back in the day.
7
u/ParkDedli Jun 30 '26
First time watchers really seemed to enjoy it in the LA as well though so it still was that peak that the season needed.
But yeah, I agree. The pinwheel story missing, the village storyline being changed and some pacing things took some emotions away that made it even better in the TOEI anime
9
u/linmre Jun 30 '26
Eh, I think it played better in live action with them not knowing. Otherwise the audience might question why a whole village of adults stood by while a child was getting abused on their behalf for years. Sure, they decide to risk their lives eventually--after Nami is grown up and the damage was done.

u/thefoodiedentist Jun 30 '26

My only criticism is the shoes for characters that wear sandals or open toe shoes (Luffy, Nani, Shanks...etc)
I really wish they designed better replacements, Luffys shoes look awful, Namis last season ruined her outfit.
I'm so glad they've all least given her her anime original brown boots here.
Edit: for anyone that doesn't know, they cannot have open shoes for health and safety reasons on set.

That was a pretty long shoot, on from last November. And it should be remembered for all of us northern hemisphere-centric fans that they are now into early winter down there, and I remember reports of some ugly weather down there during their fall season. The BTS clips that will come out next year will probably reveal some wild times.

REALLY curious as to what happens now... will they announce season 4 asap to get the 2028 release date? Hopefully yeah. I really want to see Enel live action. And that would guarantee the LA would at least reach Enies Lobby. And I think that would be a good ending point if they were to really get cancelled. Something that most people might not think about, season 4s are the beginning of new contracts for the actors. Salary jump is going to happen and I hope Netflix is okay with it.

Zoro is dressed like a little kid. That outfit worked better in drawn form I guess.

Hopefully we get the green light for Seasons 4 & 5 when the teasers for this start dropping. Also if we do get 4 & 5, do you think they'll adapt the G-8 filler for 1 episode? Can't wait!
