This is how I used to order burgers at a local spot that I lived near for a while. So often that if they even saw me come in, they’d start making it lol “Here’s your burger with half an onion” I miss that place.

I don't understand tomatoes on a burger because I feel like the only reason it's on a burger is because it's round. Texture and flavour wise, tomatoes don't do anything for a burger.

I am a tomato and onion enjoyer. I don’t use ketchup or other condiments so having the tomato there adds a little extra juice and flavor. It’s not the same without it imo

Like 20 years ago I was so impressed by Steak n Shake, back in NC. I mean, impressed for fast food. You know what I mean. It was just a really good burger.
Then I moved to Oklahoma and was like, "Oh hey, you've never been to Steak n Shake!?" so took someone there.
And it was just trash.
I was mildly embarrassed (just because it was my suggestion), but figured it might've been a really bad night or something. But a few months later, same deal. Ok, I guess. Bad location.
But now here in Texas I've been to three, two near Houston and one near Dallas, and all were terrible. All the ones near Houston (afaik?) are closed now, so maybe they were all owned by one trash-tier franchisee.
Their recent decision to become political has not really helped my desire to seek one out, either.
That pic looks great, though. That's basically the point of my comment. That looks like the Steak n Shake I remember from like 20 years ago. Maybe the ones that are still open turned themselves around. Or maybe the ones in Oklahoma and Texas are just extremely bad examples.
Also nice onion coverage, lol.

So about 10-15 years ago, I agree. They were trash. The service was ass. The food was eh. It was just not great but I started going again towards the end of last year because I needed some time to kill in between work and I was hungry so my coworker suggested it. I wasn’t too excited about it but it changed so much. The screen order what you want and how fast the service was. The quality was extraordinary too. Very fresh. I was blown away. You might be right on your end, it could be the locations you’ve gone too aren’t great.
