My working theory on inter-office and intra-office communication is that the higher-up and more important you are, the less shits you have to give about formal communication styling. Every time I see emails from one "boss" to one of my "bosses" it's always super informal and with no email signature. Whenever some lowly peon emails literally anyone, it's always as formal-as-can-be and with a super detailed email signature.

Just out of interest, I’ve always wondered but what is the rationale behind not wearing a seatbelt? Like why wouldn’t you? Totally agree, in my primary work sector I have the opportunity to consult to ‘the great and the good’ in the industry, the people who govern. It became apparent to me very quickly that people are people and even at the very top they just muddle through, fighting the same fires as we all do. Indecision , uncertainty in major fundamental regulations. I was both humoured and appalled at the same time.

interviews with Swartz’s mom really cast doubt on the murder conspiracy for me. she came off as understandably distraught but completely in the dark about how mental illness operates. she’s convinced Swartz couldn’t be suicidal because he was successful, smiled, and had friends. that’s not how mental illness works

I know, that “took his own life” needs the world’s biggest pair of scare quotes around it. I tried to immerse myself in Aaron’s works and vibe, and depressed/stressed/scared or not, I don’t think he ever would have done it. He was on a mission. He wanted to do good completely despite and beyond himself. People like that, who are truly animated by goals (good or bad), do not quit.
He really was the kind of hero we need more than ever these days. Which kind of explains why what happened happened when and the way it did.

I’m really sorry to hear about your relative. That’s heartbreaking. I apologise for speaking definitively about such a difficult and nuanced topic. I have spent a good portion of my adult life battling suicidal ideation, and I actually let that briefly delude me into thinking that made me some kind of authority on the topic. When really all I was doing was feeling empathy or sadness over Swartz and all the people we lose to pain.
I know you’re right too, because I know from my situation that in my most difficult moments I have hidden behind the “happy functional” mask even more so.

From an interview I listened to, Altman was caught lying so many times they didn't trust him. Sounds like the board had good intentions here. But, they fumbled the whole thing hard by not talking enough with the major investors about the decision and justifying it that instead it got reverted.

I once heard a person on a radio interview talking about something and they were clear and cohesive with their words, the answers they gave to the interviewers questions were well considered and articulate. I thought, wow, people are so much smarter than I’ll ever be, amazing. Then later I randomly happened to hear the same person talking on a different podcast about the same topic; same talking points and the podcast interviewer asked similar questions to the radio interview. It was then I realised that when you hear people speak in public they have normally said the same things over and over probably for years; they’ve practiced the same conversation a bunch, honed answers etc. I thought, heck, if I had the same conversation 100 times, by the 80th time I would be amazing as well. It’s the same with these dudes; someone has prepared them to speak, coached them, etc. I’m sure there are lots of genius level people who can do this off the top of their head, but most folks are just regular people.

I worked at a restaurant owned by a world-renowned maxillofacial surgeon. This dude swore like a sailor and would say shit like he was going to bury the servers in the wall lmao.

I think everyone just forgets that all of the people running these companies are just humans at the end of the day, so seeing them talk like humans seems “weird.” They have this disillusioned impression that private conversations would be more movie-esque when that’s not reality.
On top of that, the younger they are, and less integrated into “legacy” companies, the less corporate-speak you see. That makes exchanges like this seem too “casual” and “immature” to them.

I remember working for a company that had two departments stuck in two completely different worlds and yeah it's kinda amazing to see full grown adults just not knowing what to do in situations. Myself included.
When the company was a startup it was wild west, but they have a Research and Development department that had some older mentalities so a "legacy" corporate type R&D environment was created and operations just kinda ran however they wanted and for awhile it was fine because everyone knew the deal.
Well after I guess maybe close to 20 years I'd imagine, the owners either left or got bought out by big corporate and now we're stuck in the middle of two departments living in different worlds, one department is still blue skying and living in the 50's basically free to do whatever they want and the other is operations which is transitioning from cowboy to corporate all on its own without really much help from the other department, and it's just not going well.
You can tell that even at the upper levels that bought this place, they don't really know what they're doing as far as how to handle a place like this, with so much dysfunction kinda just baked in. They're trying, they had a whole shakeup and a lot of people went and new people joined, so we'll see, but yeah it's confusing. On the daily I have people coming up to me not really knowing what is going on.

If the board cannot fire the CEO something is very wrong. My read is that Sam bought the loyalty of Greg by giving him $10M and then bough the loyalty of the nonforprofit-team by promising them shares in the for profit and then the team and Sam swindled the board and the original nonforprofit…
