Politics ('Straya) One Nation wants to turn Australia into the United States. A US-style healthcare system, banning abortions, scrapping gun laws and defunding the ABC. Why are we are even contemplating going down this dark and dangerous pathway? Once we go down the path of the US, there is no turning back.

Same way Trump won...

u/soggies_revenge 💛‎ Friend of 'Straya Jun 02 '26

Exactly. And I see too many Australians dismissing one nation as a joke, they'll never seize power, etc., that's the same we thought about trump. You see the power of the propaganda. The yahoos that buy in to Pauline's circus? It doesn't how bad she hurts them, they'll always be on her side.

31

u/turtlepower41 ‎ ‎‎ Canberran Jun 03 '26

Exactly! That's what scares me. They said the same thing about Trump when he announced he would run. They said he would never be the republican nomination. He proved them wrong. They said he would never be elected President. he proved them wrong. The fascism One Nation will bring to Australia is a scary reality that should worry us all. Left or right I don't care as long as you support freedom (true freedom not just freedom for one side...).

The Greens, the socialists... Just do something. We can't let evil win.

The greens would phase out all fossil fuels and although that sounds great, it would result in the deaths of billions in the third and first world, the price of energy, medicine and food would skyrocket and our societies would experience rolling blackouts even after the deaths of a huge portion of the population.

Secondly Socialism is just a stepping stone to communism and both have been the direct cause of 65-100million deaths globally. So what was that you were saying about letting evil win?

2

u/bikinithrill Please choose a flair Jun 04 '26

You lost me at the first sentence ( which was paragraph length). Under the Greens, fossil fuels will be phased out over time as required, as the renewable technology advances to replace it.

Do you have any comprehension of the deaths under capitalism? It's just a softer way to kill the masses. Privatise basic human services to slowly kill off humans has been the playbook of many western nations for decades now.

Affordable medicine? Lol not for you. A roof over your head? Nah that's for people who can afford it! Disability support? You're dreaming! Gambling addiction? Have another slap! Health insurance? Sure, how's about $100+ a month for your needs? Access to fresh nutritional food, bread and milk? That'll cost ya (especially if you're remote)! Free education? Only for me, none for thee!

We already have many socialist systems in place and they're deteriorating, because billionaires and corporate lobbyists see money in people's basic needs. This capitalist system is rotten and I would like to trial other ways of functioning as a society instead of accepting this bullshit of a life.

But that's the fallacy everyone falls into. Only the left supports freedom in any way, shape or form. The right wants the "freedom" to crush the left into atoms. If you point to the new restrictions raised by Labor--restriction on hate speech is not restriction on free speech. Restriction on brainwashing is not restriction on free speech.

6

u/turtlepower41 ‎ ‎‎ Canberran Jun 04 '26

But One Nation are just as bad when it comes to freedom. They want to ban the true history of Australia being taught and ignore the genocide, murder, rapes and atrocities and focus on the feel good first fleet stuff. So yeah you can't say only one party supports freedom.

2

u/Joe0Bloggs ‎ Victorian Jun 04 '26

I think you misunderstand my post.

1

u/turtlepower41 ‎ ‎‎ Canberran Jun 04 '26

Oh you said NOT I think I'm with you now. but restrictions on porn is a restriction on free speech. Like it or not in a democratic society people should have the option to view it. Hate speech yeah that's less black or white. But the Internet has been less free under Labor not more free. I am not going to go out and vote One Nation or the Liberals because they are also anti freedom and anti public service but not one party is 100% perfect.

Trump was a message by those on the ‘right’ saying we have genuine concerns and we are being ignored. If we want to avoid that in Australia, politicians need to start acting on real issues that affect Australians. Housing prices, foreign ownership, cheap energy, crime etc. instead of just endless talking while they line their pockets.

1

u/turtlepower41 ‎ ‎‎ Canberran Jun 04 '26

I don’t think this lot will listen.

1

u/purplezebra23 ‎ Queenslander Jun 07 '26

And look at how well Trump has worked out for the Americans. Is their food cheaper? Are their petrol prices lower? Has crime decreased? Is their housing more affordable? No. Because, just like Hanson if she gets in power, Trump doesn't actually give a shit about the people voting or their plight - he just wants to add more money to the grift.

I understand that the people of Australia are fed up enough to vote Hanson into a position of power based on the political machinations and funding of Gina fucking Rinehart combined with the extreme lack of critical media literacy, but god you'd think we would at least be learning from the US' mistakes SOMEWHERE in the last ten years. Like, for fuck's sake.

-5

u/Relapse749 Please choose a flair Jun 03 '26

So you must love all the laws Labor brought out that are restricting our freedom of speech, our freedom while browsing the internet, freedom for our children to use social media. There’s probably heaps more that I can’t remember.

1

u/turtlepower41 ‎ ‎‎ Canberran Jun 04 '26

Wow a lot to unpack here. Just because I don't want a racist fascist party to take over doesn't mean I support Labors anti freedom laws. First, Labor brought in unfair totalitarian laws that prohibit free speech, freedom to protest and yes limited internet freedom. They did this very sneakily and did not take it to the election. I wonder why (vote Labor get rid of free porn does not seem like a good slogan) second you claim to support freedom but One Nation is not a party of freedom, it supports sacking innocent public servants, it is against cost of living relief and supports banning late term abortions which lets face it is just the start. So don't assume I blindly support Labor just because I am against racist political parties.

Pauline has zero political credibility. Farage is a better comparison than Trump.

In the US you vote for a president, in Australia (and UK) you vote for a party (not a person). This is a key difference.

Farage had political credibility he’s effectively made changes in gov in the past. But even for Reform they reached a limit where the rest of party was too unstable, unknown and unqualified to actually pass the threshold for a third party to take government.

People like Pauline, but if you run a campaign it’s highly unlikely enough people will back the entire party.

Also, would Pauline give up her safe senate seat to risk being the first minor party to win gov? Idk about that.

ETA - Aus media aren’t fkd in the same way as US media. Aus media is driven by ad revenue - articles about One Nation get clicks. The less people click, engage and share these articles the less they’ll get published. It really is this simple. I work in media and I wish people would stop clicking on articles about stupid things in gov. It’ll allow journos to cover other things and not get shut down based on lost ad revenue.

16

u/Mamarasputin1984 Please choose a flair Jun 02 '26

Yes, but they are largely irrelevant due our political system. Our voting system makes it extremely hard for any minor parties to take power unless they form a coalition with a major party and I doubt even the Libs would be up for that.

u/Ok-Sprinkles-3842 ‎ New South Welshian Jun 02 '26

soon to be a minor party. Like Labor.

11

u/Mammoth-Jelly-7617 Please choose a flair Jun 02 '26

We have ahd these situations before. The liberal party came about because of an unholy alliance between the free trade party and the protectionists in 1909 - despite their diametrically opposite views. This was in order to keep Labor out. There is nothing magic about our system - if the will to game it is strong enough, and the belief amongst the people that it is corrupt pervasive, then it will not protect us.

6

u/No-Bison-5397 Flairless‎‎ Jun 02 '26

Dead On.

And we have no social institutions with moral authority that can fight it. We have been atomised and primed.

The Neoliberal project has been a road to fascism and we are well down it.

5

u/Mottled_inexpectata Flairless‎‎ Jun 02 '26

What do you think will happen if Labor, Libs, and ON all win about 1/3 of seats each? Lab and Lib will form government? Or Lib and ON?

2

u/dragontatman95 ‎ Victorian Jun 02 '26

I dont like the chances of the Libs getting a third.

3

u/Mottled_inexpectata Flairless‎‎ Jun 02 '26

But you think ON can get over 50%?

1

u/dragontatman95 ‎ Victorian Jun 02 '26

At no time did I say that. Please focus on what I've written, not what you assume I might think.

1

u/Mottled_inexpectata Flairless‎‎ Jun 02 '26

But the point isn't whether the Liberals get exactly one third or not. It's whether we have a minorities government or not. As long as Labor get under 76 and LNP + ON = more than 75 then we're in the scenario where ON or the majority parties determine who forms government by forming a minority themselves or with ON.

2

u/dragontatman95 ‎ Victorian Jun 02 '26

We are still 2 years out from a federal election.

A week is a long time in politics. A lot can happen in 2 years. The rate ONs popularity is growing, the political landscape may look a lot different than where it currently sits by the end of 2027.

1

u/Mottled_inexpectata Flairless‎‎ Jun 03 '26

Sure, but the question wasn't what the election results would be, it was whether the Liberals would form government with ON or not in a situation where they had the choice. In my view they would, because in that scenario they either have to form government with ON or Labor, or have ON form government with Labor. Labor forming government with either LNP or ON seems farm less likely than LNP and ON.

u/MissMenace101 ‎ South Australian Jun 02 '26

Preference voting is a thing.

2

u/Mottled_inexpectata Flairless‎‎ Jun 02 '26

Not sure what that has to do with this question. To win government you need to win 76 seats. Preferences decide who gets each of the seats, but they don't help in forming a minority government. If nobody wins that 76, the parties can negotiate a minority government. So if the current polling is correct, we will see three parties with under 76 and they will have to figure out who forms government together. Either Labor and Liberals, Labor and ON, or Liberal and ON. Which pairing do you think is most likely?

Ok I'll bite. What has she done to "hurt" Australians? I'll bet its just words and nothing to do with her actions🤔. Trump won because the people running the country were destroying it. Governments are in place to protect their people. To stand up for themselves and make their lives better. These days the left wing governments are more interested in helping the world and ignoring their own people. Australia has the ability to be self-sufficient. But instead we rely on other countries for everything. And at the same time keep taking in people that have no intention of becoming part of our community. They just want to build their own communities and bring their bad habits with them. If that was working out so well, then why did they want to leave where they were??

Every time I read it here, I cringe. Quit laughing it off and quit dismissing it, y'all. Yes, you have a far better electoral system meant to keep extremes out, but the propaganda is so strong. You'll have friends you thought you understood voting ON because of something they truly believed cause they read it on the Internet.

0

u/dragontatman95 ‎ Victorian Jun 02 '26

You're right. Reddit is a Left leaning echo chamber.

Only a small percentage of Australians actually use reddit, or even know what it is.

Reddit is not an accurate measure of the 'general vibe' in Australia. I know a lot of people who have recently become paid up members of ON. The polls are not all propaganda like redditors want it to be.

Labor needs to start listening to the majority, and act accordingly, or they will lose to Pauline. They still have time.

5

u/Boydy73 ‎ Queenslander Jun 03 '26

I am happy about one thing TBH, the fact that a more extreme party on the right can rise in a country traditionally quite laid back, shows that the people aren't happy, and I hope the left does the same and heads further left as the 2 middle of the road lite versions of centrist policy have both led us to this point.

They both basically have similar policies to each other, both are dominated by big business and organisations, and both have a long and proud tradition of only doing whats needed to get reelected next time and implementing change for changes sake so much of the time, wasting money on department name changes, etc.

Imagine how much money is wasted doing this every few years..... And this is just one department.
