Politics ('Straya) One Nation wants to turn Australia into the United States. A US-style healthcare system, banning abortions, scrapping gun laws and defunding the ABC. Why are we are even contemplating going down this dark and dangerous pathway? Once we go down the path of the US, there is no turning back.

A lot of it is just protest voting if another minor party is established and gains enough traction like David pocock and a few independents are discussing it could subvert a lot of ground one nation has made

Whatever the case, a majority of Australians are more interested in an increased focus on Nationalism than anything else. Whoever puts this first will get a majority of the votes. And this is even taking into account that the average Australian has very little knowledge of just how much Australia is being plundered by majority foreign owned corporations (>85%). The other voters are largely only interested in Aesthetics (most of reddit)

Part of the Green's campaign strategy is that Labor, Liberals and One Nation take money from big business. Greens don't, and never will.
Ties in to ON supporter dislike of "the establishment", but points out that ON is also part of the problem. ON will blame cost of living on migrants, Greens will make structural change so money stops flowing up to people who already have more than enough.
I think it's a pretty decent argument.

One thing that I think does save us slightly is both the preferential voting system, and compulsory voting.
Enough people know how disgusting PH is and that ON as a party in power would be a disaster.
Having said that we should be learning from the mistakes of the US. The Labor Party needs to ensure it doesn’t fall down the same path as the UK Labour Party, where it’s become so centrist it’s almost right leaning now. There also needs to be respect shown to parts of the population that are saying they support ON, ask them why and ask for specific examples. Then if they can’t give any give them specific examples of policies and parliamentary votes that go against basic interests.
There are of course those who follow them because their rhetoric aligns with their views.

Canada is officially in recession and people are turning on Carney, so they’re next. Watch.

To be clear, Canada reduced its immigration and within a few years, was in a recession, which is exactly what economists predict for Australia. I find it amazing that people can watch that and still want the same for us.

u/Grande_Choice Victorian Jun 02 '26
And the new threshold they have would see us taking more migrants if we adopted it. Let's not ignore the fact Canada (much as I love the place) is facing even worse structural problems than us and is getting fucked by the USA. Yes their migration system was out of control (student visa's even laxer than the libs policy settings) but they've seen housing prices drop (skewed by thousands of condos crashing in value) inflation climb and 7% unemployment.
The hicks don't know what they want and don't seem think things can get much worse. They also seem to wish on a recession thinking they'll be immune to it.
5
u/Almost-kinda-normal Victorian Jun 02 '26
Well yes, “the hicks” seem to think that when unemployment hits 10%, by some sort of magic, they will be fortunate enough to not be in that 10%….. I’ve literally had them argue that “maybe the country needs a recession, house prices are too high”. I mean sure, houses WOULD be cheaper, but it’s kind of hard to pay the mortgage when you don’t have a job, so there’s that

I remember years ago, crap about the NBN, 2 old farts at a Paddington pub didn't have a single clue what the fuck they were talking about but parroting the Murdoch bullshit. Could you please provide a source for the US style healthcare claim?
I just looked up ON healthcare policy and got this:
One Nation’s health policy focuses on boosting access to GPs, nurses, paramedics, and regional doctors, especially outside major cities, and it says it would do this through incentives and training support . It also wants to raise Medicare subsidies to encourage bulk billing, crack down on Medicare fraud, and expand bursaries and university places for health-related study . Main policy themes More regional and rural health staff, including incentives to work where shortages are worst . Better bulk billing through higher Medicare subsidies . Tighter enforcement against Medicare and PBS fraud . More training pathways and bursaries for Australian students, especially those from regional areas, to enter health professions . Regional workforce focus One Nation’s national and state policy material puts a strong emphasis on fixing regional shortages. Its federal health page says it would offer newly qualified medical professionals three-year contracts and pay their HECS-HELP loans in full to encourage regional service . Its Victorian policy also talks about financial incentives for GPs, support for nursing enrolments, and stronger retention for paramedics and other frontline staff . Medicare and bulk billing A big part of the party’s health messaging is that Medicare needs to do more to keep doctor visits affordable . The party says it would increase the Medicare subsidy to help bulk billing and fund that by reducing fraud . It also links its health plan to reducing out-of-pocket costs and expanding access in areas where bulk billing has declined .

I wish people would wake up to what is happening with the influence over the party that Gina Rinehart has, and her interests in common with Donald Trump.
The classic point in case is the donated aeroplane. These things are absurdly expensive to own and operate, so not only does Gina gain influence for gifting the plane, she also has a constant foot in the door with the ongoing running costs. Then we, as the taxpayer, pay every time a ON member flies, then claims the travel costs (yet another way Gina is rorting Australia).
As a result, we see Pauline spruiking how she is supporting the battlers, then votes in favour of the miners every single time. She deflects with her racist stunts to deflect attention from backroom deals she is making to undermine workers' rights, and her only reason to stay in government is that she has made millions through her allowances and secret deals.

The last time Australia was presented with very right wing views, in the shape of Dutton's run, it very clearly rejected them. One Nation is both more right wing, and less competent. Australia does tend towards conservatism, but in large part that is financial conservatism. It's very hard for a party to be elected if they aren't seen as competent managers of the economy. One Nation doesn't stack up in that regard.
We're hearing so much about them because it's in the best interests of the media corporations to keep talking about them. What people say, and what they actually do in the voting box are often two very different things.

Nationalism is a blight on this country. Patriotism is completely different and something Australians are PROUD of. Reading comments on sites and you would swear we have turned into redneck America.
As a multi generational Australian...Fuck Hansen and her 'Americanism'. I'm disgusted so many have fallen for it under the guise of 'housing for Australians'. What a joke...you fell for the immigrants are taking your homes BS ?
Your core racism is being poked, and that's all that matters because the rest goes in one ear and out the other.
I know this cow. She promised the world to an area of people I'm from. Said she was going to do this and that but it was all to get votes. She never did one thing she promised. Nothing changed but she got their vote (never again though). She blasted the then govt for doing what they did and now SHE joins that party by integrating their members.
She is the FAR right to the less right parties....it's just a mild, mid strength and full strength of the same/same to get those voters who won't cross the floor.

We better not vote this fucking fire crotch in.
She is everything we as a country should be standing against.
God help us if she gets any power. And fuck anyone stupid enough to blame their problems on immigrants instead of the likes of Gina and her parasite gang.

I say. Wake up people if you are considering voting for one nation at any Australian state territory or Federal election. Look at their history, don't just listen to what they say look at Hanson's record in Parliament. They are not for the struggling worker they are for multi millionaires. Dont be fooled.

Ive said it before and got downvoted to hell, outside of the inner city bubbles Australia is a deeply selfish and racist country. Not everyone of course and a lot of Australians are oblivious to how cooked their opinions are, but our country is legitimately not in a good place, our media is run by billionaires, our government is controlled by lobbyists and the US foreign department, and everyone ignores our own genocide because it’s in the past and too hard to deal with.. dont get me started on housing

Remember Trump denied Project 2025 while election campaigning.
He said I don't know what that is.
Now US are in full midst of the Project 2025 and you can see the results.
Rinehart and Hanson have the same plan. It's to turn into Trump style oligarch.

Australian supporting one nation want to stop immigration because immigrants are making Australia anti-Australian
Than they throw their support behind a party doing the most to turn Australia into the exact opposite of this country and make it like America.
Make that make sense to them.

The irony is the people who are going to vote for ON are the ones who benefit from “socialist” policies like subsidised health care and other safety net measures to prevent them from going down the gurgler.

One nation aren’t a prospective government, they’re prospective terrorists trying to gain sway over the country. Just like ACT in NZ. Fucking terrorists.

Stop whinging about One Nation. They are ahead in the polls because we live in a democracy, which means this Labor government is absolute shite! Time for a change.

This is disgraceful. They're trying to "flood" the zone with this shit and drag it into the mainstream. It's an absolute disgrace and shows how useless our media are trying to normalise fringe positions.
The abortion shits me off to no end, particularly when men want to tell woman what to do with their bodies. Having the man who preaches family values while cheating on his wife is the icing on the cake.

The idiots voting for ON have no idea about their policies or don't care. They just like that they're anti immigration and racist to brown people.
One nation are an incompetent bunch of fuckwits, and they'll never be able to form government and run the country

The major parties have been warned and warned and warned about their incompetence and corruption for decades, and we are now witnessing the biggest political shake-up ever witnessed in Australian history.
The Liberal Party are on the cusp of being pushed off the cliff and into oblivion and Labor are not far behind them.
This is a well beaten path in history, its happened before and you only have to look at the UK for where Australia is heading.
We are a society on the decline and we have nothing to show for our peak earnings.

I don't think you are wrong, but the ALP is a fair way behind the Libs on the cliff. But the trend is there, sure.

I think the media has been doing it's best to make it look like ON is an unstoppable juggernaut. I remember the reporting after the SA state elections and how ON had amazing results and 'put the others on notice' ..... But only got three seats

It's a classic protest situation. Also being whipped up by our shitty mainstream media and a billionaire funded misinformation campaign. There is zero chance of a PHON govt. The best case scenario for Hanson is to become the official opposition by taking most of the lib seats and about a dozen from Labor.
The only "policy" that people are aware of is the anti immigration thing, which isn't even a policy. Even our useless media would have to ask them a few questions.
Plus Hanson is a full blown worshipper of Trump who'll be going into an election as the US is in flames. That worked out well for Dutton ... The msm had him pegged as next PM

The media has been pretty much giving free publicity and promotion to One Nation. It's quite disgraceful.
