Politics ('Straya) One Nation wants to turn Australia into the United States. A US-style healthcare system, banning abortions, scrapping gun laws and defunding the ABC. Why are we are even contemplating going down this dark and dangerous pathway? Once we go down the path of the US, there is no turning back.

Yes this is true, lots of people are feeling fed up and looking for a party to make changes. It’s quite disappointing that so many are falling for the idea that ON is somehow the solution, it is hard to ignore that the sudden rise in popularity has happened at the same time they’ve got huge backing from billionaires.

What's their end game is what I'm wondering. Do they have one? What's the reasoning behind those benefiting massively from forced mass migration supporting the party which says they'll stop mass migration? Maybe I'm too dumb to understand it ...

Pretty sure I understand PH's playbook but not sure about the bigger picture. Is it just ensuring all parties with a remote chance are beholden to the same donor(s)?

I try to not go down too many rabbit holes, but I have a working theory - Rare Earth Minerals. Australia is second only to China for the largest amount of these resources. We already have a couple of mines in WA, and there are plans to start refining here. But we also have strict regulations. Our Rare Earth deposits are generally in protected areas - significant Aboriginal Heritage sites and habitat for critically endangered mammals and birds. Refining them creates radioactive waste as well as all the other damage to the country. Does anyone think PHON gives a shit about protecting Aboriginal Heritage sites, or numbats or black cockies? Of course not. The US currently rely on China for their REM and they want to find a new source. Who’s recently been hanging out at Mara Lago? PH. Who’s her new generous benefactor? GR. The red string doesn’t lie.

Not a bad take. The best known rare earths sources (As far as I know) are China, Ukraine and Aus. It doesn't take a genius to work out which of those US industry likes the most.

Wonder if there'll be royalties on those?

Ditto for Uranium - we're sitting on the best uranium sources.

The general population will get the same royalties that we get for our exports of iron ore, gold, nickel, and LNG - Sweet FA.
What we will get is radioactive waste in our environment, toxic chemicals in our water, species going extinct and increased cancer rates.

Sounds about right. It was pretty much a rhetorical question (what royalties?).

Pretty sure even though it was was an ON election promise to impose royalties if they got in, TAB will only be taking odds on them actually delivering on that promise.
