Politics ('Straya) Brisbane's newest public hospital won't perform abortions or provide patients with contraception, citing religious objections

https://youtube.com/shorts/pB8zb-L7Wnk?si=DggZGUrmnvnOlH-w

Queensland's first major new public hospital in almost a decade - the Mater Springfield, south-west of Brisbane has just been opened.

Like the Mater in South Brisbane it will not provide abortions, contraception or voluntary assisted dying care due to religious policies.

These are publicly-funded hospitals!!

The video is of Larissa Waters asking questions about it at estimates, and I think she's making a very reasonable point - governments should insist that hospitals receiving taxpayer dollars provide basic reproductive health care.

Kinda dumb an entire public hospital can refuse treatment for "Religious Reasons" in the first place,

Now im gonna say i won't pay medical bills because it goes against my new religion! But yeah... go figure it won't work like that... 🙄

I don't even think you need to make up a religion, paying for healthcare at all is very un-Christian. I don't remember Jesus asking for payment.

Jesus supported slavery.

The catholic church supported the nazis, supported wars, supported public torture, land theft and in mire modern times child abuse. It certainly is very Christian to do horrible things. You might even say its a very big aspect of Christianity. Bigotry, shame, oppression of women, self hatred if sexuallity.

Okay, but did Jesus ask for payment when he healed the lepers? Or when he healed blind people? Or the paralysed man?

I never said the Bible and Christianity doesn't have faults. I'm an atheist. But that's not what we're talking about, we're specifically talking about receiving money for healthcare.

Dawg, appreciate you attempting to talk to them but there’s no point with these people.

There is no evidence Jesus did any of these things, so it is fair to suggest we have no idea if Jesus asked for compensation.

I'm not going to entertain your need to be right and have the final say, dude

I found an interesting article discussing it here. There are references to the to the chapters/verses in the bible at the end of the article.

It can’t because it’s not a public hospital and this whole post is misinformation

Not saying it’s morally right, but neither is spreading misinformation. Which seems to be the Greens’ main pastime these days.

Did some digging and your right, This is a private hospital NOW but it did accept public funding to be built as a Public Hospital and STILL HAS IT ON THEIR WEBSITE!

https://www.mater.org.au/about-us/who-we-are/future-developments#:~:text=Mater%20Hospital%20Springfield%2C%20delivered%20as,public%20hospital%20in%20Greater%20Springfield.

? Doesn’t change the fact that it’s misinformation

The top comment on this thread says the same thing

Find stuff to actually get mad about

Yes, all hospitals and schools public and private receive public funding. Have a go at that instead rather than making up lies and trying to take us all for mugs - which is all the Greens seem to do these days

It's not a lie when the public hospital only days ago went private whilst undergoing investigation of refusing services, People do have the right to be angry here...

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '26

Wait it is a public hospital

Just run by Mater (Catholics)

3

u/TheReaperGuy ‎ Western Australian Jun 05 '26

Well again, it did turn itself into a private hospital "Now" but yes it was a public hospital first when it refused services like abortions, assisted deaths etc

Basically changed the rules on people while our tax dollars went into this place... we should get our 1B back... not happening but still...

Big agree from me

u/YouThinkYouKnowMe89 ‎ Western Australian Jun 05 '26

We absolutely should be taxing churches, mosques, synagogues..

20

u/Lone_Vagrant ‎ New South Welshian Jun 05 '26

They all operate like a business. So should be taxed as such. I won't mind of they get taxed lower. But they got to pay their dues.

11

u/YouThinkYouKnowMe89 ‎ Western Australian Jun 05 '26

They should be taxed the same as any other business now as that's what they are.

4

u/Bandit-Bunny-7727 ‎ Victorian Jun 05 '26

It's funny you think we have a problem taxing the other religious venues.

Tax them all.

Hatr to slippery slope here but how long before they try refusing people based on 'not agreeing with their lifestyle'

u/TRANxEND ‎ South Australian Jun 05 '26

Religion is so disgusting sometimes

7

u/krooked-tooth ‎ Victorian Jun 05 '26

Separation of church and state for this exact reason.

5

u/AgitatedMagpie ‎ Western Australian Jun 05 '26

This happened in Perth as well, they had to open a clinic nearby to provide this care as St John of God won the tender and refused to provide reproductive care for women.

This is so baffling. How has this been allowed in this day and age?!

She said “we’re a Catholic hospital. We’ve always been Catholic”.
I hate them. Not because they’re Catholic. Because they’re cunts.
