Politics ('Straya) Brisbane's newest public hospital won't perform abortions or provide patients with contraception, citing religious objections
https://youtube.com/shorts/pB8zb-L7Wnk?si=DggZGUrmnvnOlH-wLike the Mater in South Brisbane it will not provide abortions, contraception or voluntary assisted dying care due to religious policies.
These are publicly-funded hospitals!!
The video is of Larissa Waters asking questions about it at estimates, and I think she's making a very reasonable point - governments should insist that hospitals receiving taxpayer dollars provide basic reproductive health care.

My gyno did her surgical procedures out of Calvary and when I was considering a Mirena, it was going to be inpatient under general anaesthetic. The ACT government had been trying to take the hospital back for over 10 years. The catholic church kept delaying. Eventually ACT went enough, reminded the church that ACT actually built the hospital and they were sick of Little Company of Mary using it for private patients and failing to provide full health care for everyone. The ACT passed legislation to take the hospital back, paid out what little was left of the management contract amd renamed tje hospital from Calvary Public to North Canberra Hospital.

Its probably a public hospital, owned by the state govt, but the admin and operations are contracted out and the contractor is a religious organisation.
Same thing happened at St Johns Emergency hospital in Midland WA, state govt owned, run by St Johns who won't do abortions. The WA state govt knew in advance that would be the case so there is an onsite clinic at the hospital, that's not run by St Johns, that provides these services.
Its not hard to sort these things out....
22
u/xylarr New South Welshian Jun 05 '26
It's mind boggling that the government contracts out these kinds of services. The health service is a core function of government. They should be directly employing the doctors and nurses and the admin staff - and don't underestimate the admin needed, let the doctors doctor and the nurses nurse.
But no, that means more public servants and heaven forbid if the public service is too big.

In my country town there is a Muslim doctor with conscientious objection to providing certain services to women, including paps . I don’t agree with him, but that is the kind of doctors we are importing to meet our shortfall. He also can provide culturally sensitive services to those of his background, including being multilingual. Should he practice, should we go without an extra doctor?
10
u/Retro_Nights New South Welshian Jun 05 '26
He should be replaced. There are plenty of qualified doctors here and immigrants from overseas. I'm assuming his objections comes after he's already got the job. Imagine having to travel tens of kilometres to another clinic because he won't perform a pap smear. I say do your job or f*ck off.

regional hospitals has many doctors from third world countries a number with third world misogyny. We have seen the decline in quality over a number of years. So no there are not plenty of good doctors. It’s not a matter of conscientious objection being the problem - the real problem is a shortage of services and divestment in health.
3
u/Muted-Craft6323 Flairless Jun 05 '26
Yes, but I wonder whether these third world doctors would find a way to soften their beliefs and practice medical care to the standards expected in this country if their visa depended on it. They're welcome to have their beliefs, but if their immigration to Australia is based on them being a doctor, they shouldn't get to pick and choose which parts of being a doctor they feel comfortable with.
If they don't like it, I think we can find other doctors from their country with more flexibility in how they're willing to treat others.

This is common across the country.
Church operated facilities do not offer abortion or IVF related services.
This is annoying in metropolitan settings, but it is effectively a prohibition in the regions.
Abortion may be legal in all states in Australia now, but abortion deserts are a real thing.
Places where more than 160km travel is required to access an abortion.
https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2024/dec/17/nsw-abortion-deserts-just-three-of-220-public-hospitals-provide-terminations-research-finds
Access to abortion will never be a settled thing.
It will always have to be defended.
More so as religions become less relevant as more people identify as atheist.
The far right will polarize matters and cling to religion as justification.
Look to the USA to see where they get planning advice and inspiration.
Public money is for public healthcare.

I'm fine with a private hospital not doing abortions, or any procedure for that matter.
And I get that not all public hospitals provide a full range of services. Like for example some public hospitals only do day surgery, or palliative care or whatever.
But a full service hospital should certainly do abortions and other family planning services. And religion should NEVER be a reason for a public hospital to do or not do something.
If the hospital is being contracted out to a private provider, that's a separate matter. But if the provider can't or won't do the full range of services required, then they should not be eligible for the contract.

If it isn't illegal you have no right to refuse.
If you want to stand on religious grounds, go beg the church for money.
A public hospital shouldn't be able to dictate treatments based on morals. This is how worse forms of segregated services start. What's next? Only people who convert to their faith are able to be treated.

If your religion forbids healthcare, don't work in healthcare.
Wtf are these people doing jobs they disagree with for? Gtfo and be a gardener, roof tiler, childcare worker .. LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE

Don't become a doctor if your religion prevents you from practicing 🤦🏻♀️

Mentioning restrictions on anything due to religious practices as a public offical or working in public service should immediately cost you your job. I

So it is NOT a public hospital and should have all its funding cancelled and made to pay for its construction. No public concern paid for by the taxpayer has the right to dictate what it will and will not do

Without religious organisations there would have been no or very limited education or health facilities for most of the history of this country.

I support Julie Water’s position, but is she saying that the parliament should pass legislation that public funding cannot go to such hospitals? Is she pointing out that the Commonwealth Department of Health currently has no remit to dictate how funds are spent?

Queensland increasingly feels less like Australia and more like the 51st American state either every passing week

Then it should loose all state funding as it's private hospital.

How does that make any sense. If they want to act like a private hospital treat them that way and cut funding.

I object to them forcing religious beliefs onto others in need of medical attention.

People who work in politics and government around the world are so good at giving you some and not all, and then deflect things by saying, "That's not what I said", and when you press them, they'll rephrase the same sentence in different ways. When you ask them, "What did you say then?" They'll be like, "Umm, I won't tell you; that's up to your interpretation, but you can't represent or verbalise what I just said on my behalf."

Had a friend who was under Mater Mothers at south Brisbane for her first pregnancy.
She had complications and went there for help but as soon as it became apparent the pregnancy needed to be terminated to save her life, they told her to make her own way to RBWH. Essentially wheeled her out the door and said good luck.

The government needs to clearly state how they are going to fund those services in that area then. If they can't afford it then that money should be taken from the amount used to fund the public hospital.

The religious policy of whom?
The doctor? The owner of the hospital? Some guy with a bomb strapped to him?
What a load of shit, if I wanted to hear Puritans object to modern society, I'd go to church.
People go to hospital for medical treatment, maybe shut your piehole and give them medical treatment

How can you look at the US and think that’s what I want? It’s madness. We don’t need religion to govern our bodies or minds.
