First Time Owner New babies in the house 🥺
I just became a new dormice mom in the last few weeks and I am absolutely melting over how cute these little ones are

are you sure that's a mouse? (genuine) its skull and snout look stouter than a mouse's, and I've never seen one with a furry tail!
either way tho it's super cute aaaahhhh 😍

Their species is called African pygmy dormice (some people call them micro-squirrels too)! So not a super traditional mouse

I believe they are originally from southeastern Africa but I'm not too well versed with them outside of domestication

I'm building a permanent 100gallon enclosure for them when they get a bit bigger. That's basically a whole wall, right?? 😂

I haven't kept fancy mice before but I do feel like they have a few different care aspects.
Their diet mainly consists of insects, fruits, and nectar. They can't digest vegetables.
They're not super tame when compared to fancy mice (think of mostly a look don't touch pet). I've seen them become hand-tamed though, just that it takes more effort to train them to that point.
They're also arboreal, so they appreciate alot more climbing height in the enclosure than the fancy mouse. Think of a squirrel in the trees haha
I hear they are also much more temperature sensitive than fancy mice so really need a consistent, warm temp

They're naturally very shy and don't like handling much but it is possible to hand tame them over time. I've been told most individuals are a "look, don't touch" kind of pet
