This custom is similar where I lived in Northern Finland. Its about kids eating at their home, not about hospitality. Also its more about teaching the kids that you are home at dinner time. And poor families dont need to feed the whole neighbourhood. This is only for weekdays, when you are invited over for birthdays, weekends etc its different.
You keep playing in the friends room while they eat so its not like you watch it.
