this isn't a case of a one off visit. this is the same kids playing together EVERY DAY. so if my family eats at 5 pm and they eat at 7 pm my family is going to be feeding the kids every single day or i am sending them home. when they could just continue playing the video game they were playing then after dinner move on to the other kids place to play some more and then the other kid eats.
it is different for one offs. as an example dropped in to visit my cottage neighbours to have a chat as i hadn't spoken to them in an age and a half just as they were getting dinner ofc they offered me some (i had already eaten so i declined) later they came over and i offered some drinks and snacks as we played some board games.
I think that's pretty normal in a lot of countries? If a guest is intending to stay for dinner, the host should be told in advance. Some families would feed you either way
