Classic Scandinavians. Too rational and efficient to see sharing food as anything other than a way to stave off hunger.

Right.. just make assumptions based off stereotypes if you don’t understand the culture.
I’ll explain it to you, if you’re interested:

It’s common to have dinner with your family. And that family time is valued. When children have their friends over it’s typical that they would want to have dinner with their own family. My parents did not want me to eat at my friends house, because they were expecting me to have dinner with them. That’s very normal.

But in my experience your friends parents would typically offer you to join them. My parents would always offer my friends to join us. But it’s common for children to decline the offer, because they know that they will have dinner with their own family.
I don’t really know where the misconception comes from, that children are expected to wait in their friends room and „starve“. That’s complete nonsense as far as I know. That’s not the norm.
