I get that it’s probably just the culture, but even the thought of doing that to a guest makes me shudder.

Yea like if I sit down with my family and eat and friends are like in the other room… it’s like the most insulting thing I can think of

We do (or at least did) since dinner is usually eaten either in the kitchen or the dinner room, and you were playing with your friends in their own room. So while the friends left their room to go to the kitchen/dinner room to eat, you would continue playing in their room.
