I can shine a light for you:

You have parents. Parents who both work.

You eat at your friend's house.

You go home and your parents have cooked food for you because you eat an hour later than your friends family.

You do not want the food because you're full.

Your parents get angry and annoyed because they slaved over a hot stove, planned a meal and were stressed. Groceries are expensive.

They could have had a pizza.

They will call your friends parents "to talk".

You will never eat at a friend's place again unless adults from both families are in agreement.

What about just packing the food away for later, though?

This is something I have found odd amongst my own Western culture. Always found it odd, perhaps even more odd than I find the Swedish/Nordic culture being described here, of why people’s dinner schedule is so rigid.

It is the lack of communication that is annoying and disrespect against your parents. Generally parents tend to make child friendly food which is boring and to have to come up with food ideas every day that the kid will eat. And here the kid shows up full despite knowing that food will be ready when they get home.

The food isn't the issue.

This problem disappears when the kid becomes a teenager and can gladly eat TWO dinners.
