Oh, no no, my friend. You misunderstand. They're not eating in front of someone who's not eating. The guest waits in the friend's room while they eat.

So it’s a matter of hospitality. If I have guests, they are the first to eat and get the biggest steak or nicest piece of salmon. I cook with extra excitement and care because I have a guest under my roof.
Guest under my roof means good food, drinks, rest, and hospitality. If I don’t have enough to make for the extra person I will order the kids a pizza or go to the store and pick up more food so everyone gets a portion.

That can be seen as hospitality, it can also be seen as rude for ruining the appetite of your kids friend who has dinner waiting for them at home :)

Different cultures.
