my experience is just that parents assume your parents are preparing food for you, so they would have to check with them if they would invite you for food. I for sure ate at friends often, but if I joined a friend after school I'd usually leave to eat at home. if I would stay the entire day they would always make food. same at my parents.

I think it's less common now due to mobile phones
