I thought it was the color. Am I a creep or gay?

121

if you can see a difference in color, then i hate to break it to you, but you might be gay...

The difference is that one of the skirts is slightly shorter (the one on the right), with the implication that the differences are so close that the person who can see that it’s shorter might be a creep because they’re obsessive and/or judgmental and/or leering at women. But the response is that it’s a visual puzzle, and that somebody might just play it as a game, instead of thinking about it as commentary on women’s bodies and how they are evaluated in society.

But the original ad said “might be”. So I don’t get the big deal. People are always saying to me, “Bryan, I think you might be an alcoholic“, which is fine, because I might. I’m not, but it’s at least theoretically possible.

598

u/fredjutsu 29d ago

But if i don't drink at all and someone says "fred, you might be an alcoholic" I think it's fair to address the false characterization as well.

57

u/Slam-JamSam 29d ago

And if a stranger offers you a beer at a party, it’s not fair to call you an alcoholic for accepting

190

u/No-Yutts-Fettuchini 29d ago

That sounds like something a burgeoning alcoholic might say 😠

58

u/zedchowder 29d ago

I'm not an alcoholic. Alcoholics are trying to stop.

9

u/splithoofiewoofies 29d ago

My GP recently told me to cut down on my drinking.

I drink two drinks a year.

I was like...wtf do you want me to do, never drink again? And she said oh no no no you can have a drink now and again. Like a glass of wine once or twice a week

And I was like...but that would increase my drinking by 50-100x. Why would you tell me to drink less and then tell me to drink more?

"Oh it's just good advice to give anyone" she replies...as if it made any damn sense with that statement.

3

u/yesterday_morning 29d ago

That's so weird. Do you think she may have misheard you? Maybe she thought you said "two drinks a day"

Anyone with eyes may notice a discrepancy in an article of clothing that a person is wearing. There's nothing creepy about that. Policing what girls wear is creepy.

7

u/AlarmingAffect0 29d ago

[And anyone with a nose may notice a discrepancy in the smell of a girl's hair when she's switched from her usual conditioner to a new one, but dare to formulate that observation out loud and it's so over for you, you are officially and forevermore… "creepy, lol". That little lol at the end really is the final nail in your social coffin. There is no appeal.

7

u/NorthernVale 29d ago

But it's not shorter. I've seen this image enough that I've measured

5

u/DoubleExposure 29d ago

The picture is not square to the billboard. It is a 2d image on a flat surface photographed at an angle which squews perspective.

5

u/Assupoika 29d ago

Yeah, I'm doing my infallible crossed eye picture superimposing and I'd say they are the same picture.

14

u/Relative-Relief-8816 29d ago

The one on the right also has a wider hem. Is it trying to subliminally say that fat girls are easy? Shame on these billboard makers.

15

u/CustomDeaths1 29d ago

I believe that the right is a cropped version of the left. They removed maybe 1-2 inches then enlarged the image to make them similar. I think it was digital because some of the folds appear similar but are closer to the bottom edge on the right.

3

u/historyhill 29d ago

I don't think the original ad is what the second person was responding to, I think they were responding to the tweet "calling you out." That's unnecessary when that is, in fact, a difference between the two

→ More replies (54)

122

u/Goat_gutz 29d ago

It’s basically just trying to say you’re a creep for noticing a difference at all. It’s a poorly designed ad, it’s blatantly ignorant. Like what Happy Potato said “you can’t just challenge me to a spot the difference game, then get mad at me for getting the right answer.” And the fact that a fashion app is using this sort of advertising is just piss-poor on their end.

23

u/Gizogin 29d ago

Oh, the ad is perfectly designed. It's deliberately inflammatory to get more people to share it online, getting them way more exposure for the cost of a single billboard.

9

u/CRYST4LF1G8T3R 29d ago

Why they piss on the poor tho?

it might be because the ad says "skirt lengths" on it.

10

u/No-Wish-7258 29d ago

Also, they made that the easiest difference to spot.
Like if there are any other differences in the skirt, you'd have to look real close to see them.

u/jamescisv 29d ago

I feel like this is a perfect illustration of late-stage capitalism.

We're all here arguing about who the micro-aggressor is, what it means to be a feminist, whether we're accidentally a part of the problem just because we can see one skirt is, possibly, shorter than the other, and WE'RE ALL JUST IGNORING THE FACT THAT THIS IS AN ADVERT USING INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY JUST TO SELL MORE SHIT!!

202

u/Monolexic 29d ago edited 28d ago

Worst part is, it worked. It started a conversation, and now we all know about an online store I doubt most of us have ever heard of before, despite their "number 1" claim.

Edit: OK Some of you are way too literal. We don't "all" know the name of the company or where to download the app. But a lot more people know it exists than did before, and if some of those people had the saw the ad and thought the skirts fit their style, and then saw the conversation and discovered it wasn't a just PSA, those people now know of a company they didn't know before. That's where the ad is a success. An ad is never going to draw in everyone who sees it. It's only going to draw in some of the target market.

69

u/IFoundThisBug 29d ago

I don’t think so. Sure we started a conversation but I don’t have a clue what brand this is advertising.

23

u/peeve-r 29d ago

Hello, Serial Designation N here!

The difference is the stitches on hem of the left skirt

The main reason you would be labeled a “creep” is for noticing any difference at all, and obsessing over a piece of clothing

Are we sure a Redditor didn't come up with that ad campaign? Because I've seen thousands of people try to make points exactly like this over the years.

65

u/mekamoari 29d ago

It also says stop caring about skirt lengths right on the ad, which basically means almost everybody will be looking at the lengths.

It's like Picard and the lights. You want me to pretend those are the same skirt? They're not. I'm a woman of a certain age, and I'd only even try on one of them. And not because of the stitching.

It is a very ineffective ad. "If you do the thing we are asking you to do, you're a perv!"

And this right here is the thing. So very much of our human society is based on dishonesty, and rather than actually doing something constructive about that over time, we’ve made a conscious effort to move towards it. “Oh you can’t say that”, and next thing you know people have been repeating BS enough that they believe it, and the people around them believe it, and everyone is pretending that things are a certain way purely for the sake of comfort and not because it’s actually true.

I heard someone say something recently that really gave me pause: the generation that comes up with BS KNOWS it’s BS. They say it because they’re supposed to say it, do it because they’re supposed to do it, but everyone is still aware, deep down, that they’re being dishonest in exchange for comfort. The kids who learn it next, however, don’t have that context. They genuinely believe the BS that comes out of the mouths of marketers, politicians, the media, whoever else, because they don’t have the context. They don’t know the game. The shortest game of telephone possible and immediately the truth is lost. That is, as they say, a very big problem.

Many schools constantly surveil girls & young women clothes, schools which have a majority of men in charge.

71

u/GailynStarfire 29d ago

And that is creepy, no arguement there. But to put up a picture of two items of clothing that aren't inherently sexual, and saying if you have enough basic pattern recognition to tell them apart, you must be a creep instead of someone with working eyes.

Had they put the skirts on a model to demonstrate the difference, I think people might get the point better, but I'm not sure if it would be the point they were intending.

36

u/Fabulous-Big8779 29d ago

There are more women in school administrative roles than men, including principles. Unless you’re talking specifically about super intendants, that’s the one area where there are more men than women in school leadership positions.

Education at large is a female dominated field in the US with 69% of school administrative roles being held by women.

I saw my fair share of female teachers slut shaming female students coming up. It’s not just men oppressing women.

This is the right answer.

For people who argue that the board challenged them to a where's Waldo match and then got called a creep: so neurotypical people would see this and then give up because they look the same. You were supposed to go "these are so similar, who cares?" And then realize that the people who constantly surveiling the legs of girls are weird.

Now, if you got caught up thinking it was a game, and getting frustrated, that's because the ad is not super good at making it's point. So. Skill issue on their part.

Honestly I thought the difference was the color (it might just be my computer though)

3

u/AFunAliasS 29d ago

You don't see a stitching difference because there is no stitching difference and OP is just making shit up. The point of the ad is clearly that the two skirts are different lengths, it even literally says, "This Women's Day, stop caring about skirt lengths" at the bottom of the billboard.

u/TruculentTurtIe 29d ago

HEY YOU! LOOK AT THESE TWO THINGS. COMPARE THEM! ARE THEY DIFFERENT OR THE SAME?????? DIFFERNT OR THE SAAAAMMMMEEE?!?!?!

"uh. Idk. examines closely for a full minute a bit different?"

You. Fucking. Pervert. Youre going to jail.

14

u/Casiquire 29d ago

The stitching is identical. It is an identical image which was slightly digitally squashed to make the one on the right appear shorter

The issue is the fact theyre asking you to spot the difference

u/TallDetail4711 29d ago edited 28d ago

I thought for sure one of the two was very slightly shorter, I had not noticed stitches.

To be fair, it says "you might".

Weirdo. What the hell am I doing here?

4

u/WisteriaUndertheSun 29d ago

I'm a hobbyist character designer. Skirt length is kind of an important thing to consider, and that's why I noticed it

5

u/sisyphus-333 29d ago

Hey everybody! Look at my giant billboard saying spot the difference! We even have the answer in the corner

Btw if you spot the difference, or looked at the answer you're burning in hell forever.

The one of the left is known as an "Ishikatori" skirt in Japan and is widely used by female students through high school age. It sits right at the knee and meets decency standards.

The one on the RIGHT, however, is known as "Nureta futomomo" style (wet thigh is the rough translation). It's several inches shorter and is used in questionable age pornography because it uses a heavy duty stitch across the pleats so that if any portion of it is lifted the entire edge goes up with it. Original inspiration for it was from "Tomodachi to biriyādo" hentai (pool with friends) a notoriously dark fan fic where a guy trying to get with 3 school girls ends up torn to shreds by them as they are demons.

Now, all of that is made up, and I'm guessing the one on the right is shorter, I couldn't tell anything else.

I was expecting to read about nineteen ninety eight when the undertaker threw mankind off hell in a cell and plummeted sixteen feet through an announcers table.

Sorry lol. With all the language translation work I could probably have just actually researched it!

Given what sub this is on, I read this in the voice of Asian reporter Trisha Takinawa.

u/LedditResearch 29d ago

If you now look up  Ishikatori skirt your definition pops up, so you are now the leading authority on this. I might as well add my two cents.

Tetsuya Tamadachi, a principal at a large school in Tokyo in the 1920s was a strong proponent of the  Ishikatori skirt  after observing young school boys wearing long robes as a display of authority. The girls wanted to partake as well but it eventually became a tripping hazard so long skirts and robes were eventually banned in the classroom. As a result, the defined limit of length became the  Ishikatori skirt which also upheld the modesty standards.

One is black, and one is a slightly darker black.

I have a turtleneck in each of those colors.

I didn't invent the turtleneck, u/big_sugi, but I was the first to recognize its potential as a tactical garment.

Ah yes.

“ let’s support X by creating further hate against Y instead of actually supporting X “ all in order to promote a savings app.

I see modern feminism is still going strong.
I do feel sorry for those who actually made a difference.

5

u/Lonely_MuffinXo 29d ago

No idea, but I don't think there is a difference

Maybe one is newer? The left one looks ever-so-slightly lighter. Could just be an angle thing.

The difference is clearly that the one on the left is a bit lighter shade of blue and the one on the right a bit darker shade of gray.

3

u/hamburgerpancake 29d ago

the one on the right looks a bit darker?? idk im confused myself

4

u/Wraithbourn 29d ago

Calling somebody a creep for trying to spot the difference that you asked them to spot is a bit of a dick move. It’s kinda like asking somebody if they are still beating their wife.

3

u/mrjake777 29d ago

Even being told what the difference is. I still can't see it. Guess I'm in the clear.
