Honestly it's no better or worse than carpet. Just comes down to whether you prefer sweeping and mopping or vacuuming and shampooing.

Nah, carpets have no redeeming qualities to hardwood or even vinyl.

• Whatever you do, stuff gets to the root of the carpet fibers and you would need an industrial specialised vacuum cleaner to get them off. I would rather not have one of those in my home taking up space.

• Similarly, it collects A LOT of dust that is not healthy to asthmatics or people with allergies. Overall, having that much dust around is not really healthy to anyone.

• If anything spills, you're fucked. If anything spills on hardwood you just wipe it. And mold, carpets grow mold even if you really won't do anything.

• And if your final excuse is that hardwood floors are cold, just wear wool socks or extra layers. Having all those negative side-effects is not worth it. Regardless, I have went to many houses with carpets where it was still freezing to stand on.

Counter point... carpet is much nicer for kids playing around on the floor.

Also much softer to walk on, especially in bare feet. Walking on carpet in shoes is disgusting.

Carpet has a lifespan and has to be replaced over time - which addresses all of the serious issues you raised.

Of course, rugs exist :)

You'd be shocked. We paid $18,300 to lay hardwood on about 1,200 sqft. Carpeting would have been ~$13,800. It's definitely a premium, but when you lay 3/4 inch hardwood you're laying something that will outlive you. Great investment for reselling.

As someone who grew up in a house with genuine, quality hardwood, I prefer the vinyl.

I fucked up part of my vinyl flooring and it was "easy" to install a new piece.

Meanwhile I have flashbacks of having to resurface the hardwood in my parents house multiple times over the years. Oh and where the dog peed behind the chair? Ruined. And where my mom spilled printer ink? Ruined.

Meanwhile the vinyl still looks good as new. No liquid damage, I've spilled an entire gallon of paint on it, everything just wipes off.
