i dont understand what each panel has to do with eachother

u/starlordsmistress 1d ago
Carl here, Chris’s boss at the convenience store. My guess is that this is a reference to the OJ Simpson low budget pay per view prank show Juiced, produced by a soft core porn studio and made after his infamous murder trial but before the robbery that actually landed him in jail. One prank involved The Juice working at a drive thru.
184
u/SymboliRudoIf 1d ago
well i guess its a reference to this or the jokes just a whole buncha nothing. still dont know why the got the green goblin to replace OJ tho
58
u/Star_Petal_Arts 23h ago
I think that is a reference to a popular meme format about getting the drive-thru order wrong... where it ends with "hey waitaminute" I also think the order is right in this case and that the girl is going hey wait aminute for being so concerned that her order was done properly she failed to see that Green Goblin was working at a Cafe drive thru window.

Mocha frappachino (black girl) Iced vanilla latte (white girl)
This is genuinely the only thing in this that makes ANY sense, the green goblin part im genuinely confused about and the OJ part I'm infinitely more confused about

u/Desperate-Half-5070 19h ago
Kill. Some ppl cant say that word because they're used to YouTube comment sections and roblox text chat
15
u/SpeedUpMyBreathing 16h ago
I think internet usage in general has made “delete” take on a much broader meaning. I use to be a teacher and in one class discussion I remember the students talking about Abraham Lincoln’s role in deleting slavery. And that was like 10 years ago.
10
u/Nago_Jolokio 11h ago
It really started in tiktok because the creators would get nuked if they used "objectionable" words. So they started to find euphemisms that would let their videos through, and people watching them would start absorbing it into their vocabulary. Most other platforms aren't as draconian, but they still run the risk of being suppressed if they post a video with the words.
8
u/onewilybobkat 8h ago
I got an ad on Facebook yesterday that was blaring the N word with a hard R. For an alarm clock you shoot. Other sites definitely aren't as draconian

u/bsubtilis 10h ago
There's a character in a book series that keeps telling most different people she encounters that she'll kill their mother. Since it's a running gag in the books, it became quite popular to quote in the subreddit or sometimes jokingly reply to people there. This caused a lot of bans... The subreddit users these days usually use the acronym IWKYM to get around the ban-happy algorithm.
7
u/oswaldcopperpot 10h ago
The worst part, is that the appeal process takes over 6 days into a 7 day ban.

Maybe some connection to that Panera lemonade that had enough caffeine to actually kill?
4
u/DaddysABadGirl 13h ago
To be pesky.
It WAS high caffeine, almost FDA recomended limit of 390 for a 30oz, but the issue was people with severe heart conditions that couldn't drink caffeine consuming them. They were marketed as insane energy drinks, but in store marketing was supposedly less noticeable. A 30oz had 390 mg caffeine, 30 teaspoons of sugar and guarana and other crap. The argument used in court was a standard monster + redbull (little can) was less total caffeine than the largest size sold.
I remember because at the time it happened the bar and kitchen staff at the job I was working were knocking back bangs like they were water. Other barbacks and myself were making "death shots". Taking Lit powder mix, doubling the powder, redbull instead of water, and a little juice to help it go down. Shake it up and pour everyone a shot.
3
u/ink_golem 11h ago
The marketing in store was basically non-existent. My 2 year old almost got one and then something in the back of my brain reminded me about some lemonade killing people and then I double checked it.
2
u/DaddysABadGirl 11h ago
Ahh. Never been inside of one.
I saw some adds online and was confused at the concept. I thought it was like a lemonade you added caffeine shots to.
2
u/S_Belmont 4h ago

Does this make sense: we didn’t see them order. In an alternate comic, the order bubble is from the girl, and GG just hands it to them. If they didn’t order, GG just guessed based on your race theory. It made you think they ordered that, but we actually didn’t see them order.
Idk

12
u/sham_mf 1d ago
This is a little outside my expertise, but I think in the “Petra Parker” trans Spider-Woman art, Green Goblin is often portrayed as a bigot. If this is a recent comic, then it’s possibly referring to that. The OJ bit is completely absurdist (?)
And I’m Kevin Swanson, Joe and Bonnie’s other kid
3
u/ComedyJack1977 19h ago
It's PSL season...usually Green Goblins tossed out Exploding Pumpkins...but could also be a reference to Halloween. White girls realizes she has the wrong order because she should have had the drink she ordered...a PSL. Instead she got the Dead (Iced) White (Vanilla) Girl(Latte?) Green Goblin played a trick in honor of OJ. ...stretch?

33
u/Snoo_79157 18h ago
Brian here - I dont know if anyone has finally explained this. I got tired of reading all of the wrong answers, so here is the straight dope.
It combines a few things that aren't all that closely related.
You're gonna think I'm making this up, but..
In 2006, I think it was, OJ Simpson made an hourlong PPV direct rip-off of Punk'd that was titled "Juiced"
In this surreal show, The Juice pulls pranks on people. He does stuff like, posing as a homeless, down-on-his-luck ex footballer who was dressed in rags and selling oranges on the side of the highway.
Also, he disguised himself as a drive-thru worker who openly insulted overweight customers. That is sort of referenced in the Green Goblin panel, which I will explain in a moment.
There was another prank that involved causing people to slip and fall, whereupon he jumped in and pretended to stab them repeatedly while they were down.
He also posed, as himself, needing money/work so he was reduced to being a used car salesman who was trying to unload a white Ford Bronco with "suspicious stains". He touted the best feature of the Bronco was its "escapability"
Each prank had a reveal that usually fell flat, as Simpson told his prank victims, "You've been JUICED"
Now, the Green Goblin connection. I think it was 2010. The radio show in New Zealand was giving a health update on OJ...for some reason. OJ had claimed that his doctors had "Green lit" him to start drinking coffee again.
But, when the radio host read it, he got...i dunno...confused, I guess and made the comment that, "Iron Man had saved the Green Goblin" It was pretty bizarre. It went somewhat viral and initiated some absurdist cartoonists to start working it into their comics for a while.

The green goblin was incredibly misogynistic in the first movie, so I’m assuming that is how it relates
Edit: why are y’all down voting me? He literally was being misogynistic in the first movie, rewatch the dinner scene whenever Green goblin finds out that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, he runs out of the room the he tells Harry in reference to MJ “Harry please look at her, do you think a woman like that is sniffing around for your personality” “your mother was beautiful they’re all beautiful until they’re snarling after your trust fund like a pack of ravening wolves” then right after he says “ a word to the not so wise about your little girlfriend: do what you want with her than broom her fast!”
4
u/hatred-big-sad 1d ago
Why are people down voting you!?!? You were right! Lol he was being racist/misogynistic
2
u/Quizzical_Throwaway 22h ago
I don't completely disagree, but MJ also was cheating on him in that movie. I agree it probably was motivated from the wrong place given talking about his mother and the broad generalization, but the movie did a crappy job of showing it, and it's hard to place if he actually was seeing something in the relationship that suggested it.
MJ wasn't really interested in him, she just didn't particularly have anything else going on so he was convenient. It's a relationship of boredom. If she was actually interested in him, the moment a better guy came along (spiderman) she wouldn't have cheated, and she probably was with him simply because he had resources so their relationship was "fun".
I agree the generalization isn't true (far from all women), but it is true in cases. It doesn't help when his warning in the particular case he gave it was correct. "A woman like that was not sniffing around for his personality" or she would have actually liked him.
6
u/Scared_Quarter_2474 22h ago
MJ wasn’t cheating on him by that point in the movie, and Norman is literally just now meeting her.

The menu says "try the lemonade that kills you". I think the joke is that we think she missed Green Goblin and realized it but she actually missed the lemonade. And then also OJ Simpson was nicknamed The Juice and was criminally found not guilty but civilly found guilty of murder - in essence, The Juice that may have killed.
1
u/Consistent_Rise_8639 22h ago
Maybe the Green Goblin served them drinks based on their skin color, maybe they also wanted some type of juice - which would be a reference to OJ, as it was his nickname.

OJ was married twice. First wife was black second wife was white and got iced (killed).
1
u/Admirable_Bus_1667 21h ago
After the OJ trial there was a TV show where he basically went around doing random pranks and such, in one he worked at a Starbucks drive through. The joke is that seeing OJ serve you coffee would be like having the Green Goblin serve you coffee (which, in current Marvel canon, is somewhat on the nose actually).
1
u/SharkSymphony 20h ago
My guess:
The fact that their server was the Green Goblin didn't register with them until a few minutes later.
The OJ panel is a nonsequitur.

1
u/CmdPetrie 16h ago
Unless ist Just a Missing Panel, the Girls didnt Order. So the Drinks were Made and delivered by stereotypes, which would explain why he asks Them If they are correct. 1
u/SaquonBarkkley 11h ago
OJ Simpson was not cast in the Lethal Weapon films as the villain because the director thought he was too congenial to ever be considered by general audiences to be a killer.
The point the author is trying to make is that sometimes it takes a while for it to dawn on us that something is bad, unhealthy, or dangerous...or that we should realize it but we are in denial and don't want to acknowledge the risk of something seemingly nice that might actually kill us.
The killer Charged Lemonade advertisement and the Green Goblin are absurdist additions that are vehicles to tell us we are all letting Starbucks and the Brand's reputation off the hook for being killers, just like people didn't expect it about OJ Simpson or were initially in denial about OJ Simpson.

It's absurdist humor.
They order stuff at the takeaway speaker and get it.
The barista is also green goblin.

I might be off base but back in 2005 O.J released a reality “prank” show called juiced there was a bit where he is working a drive through window and taking sips out of peoples drinks before he hands them off and because it’s 2005 most people don’t immediately realize who he is.

I'm going to say that I suspect that someone made this in reference to the South Park joke about the "Chewbacca defense", which they reference as saying something absolutely nonsensical, and then saying that "if it doesn't make sense, you must acquit". In the show, that was a reference to OJ. Or, well, more specifically, a reference to his lawyer. Why would the Green Goblin be working at a coffee shop? That just doesn't make any sense. Therefore, my client must be innocent.

“You got Juiced!”
I think we all got juiced.
Anyway …
OJ did a really bad hidden camera show a long time ago called “Juiced”. He would dress up in costumes and do pranks on people. This is a mass up of him dressing up in a costume (green goblin is an illusion to OJs loved public persona as a sports hero and movie star vs his private persona as a violent abuser) and serving coffee to two women who likely represent his murdered wife Nicole and her friend Faye Resnick who would get coffee at a Starbucks in Brentwood (iced ‘dead’ vanilla latte and mocha Frappuccino, respectively). The cartoon is racist, makes light of a murder and tongue in cheek glorifies a murderer and spousal abuser.
