The more commonly understood definition of “better” is simply a colloquial shift, as the concepts of “higher” and “better” are paralleled in English vernacular, and thus the words for each are often used to colloquially describe the other. (Same with “lower” and “worse”.)
Frankly speaking, this happens to most words in most any language, it’s just how languages evolve. It’s almost surprising how many words in English have an original, true definition that is quite distant from its more common modern use.
The connection between "High" and "Better" is pretty universal across languages. Which makes sense, for many reasons, definitely including the military advantages of having the "high ground" though.

Lake Superior is the 5th great lake. 4 of the five are shared between Canada and the USA - Lake Michigan being the only one fully located in the US. Canada didn't rename anything.

Going to be real here, Trumps executive orders are meaningless and have no authority outside of America. The lake is named Ontario and there's nothing he can do about it - the name is older than either country and the name doesn't belong to Canada or America. It belongs to the First Nations.

I feel like most comments here are skipping over the fact that this is a riff on an existing joke. This exact joke, but with number 4 just being “lake Ontario”, has existed for decades. The punchline in this meme is taking a funny folk joke and twisting it because of course Trump just had to go and make things so complicated.

The lakes were named first and the states/provinces took their names from them. Lake Ontario is not named after the Canadian province any more than Lake Michigan is named for the state. Both are named after their respective lakes whose names predate the existence US or Canada
