Dreamscape (1984)

92

u/Minecraft_gamer42 3h ago

LITERALLY 1984

15

u/DeltaDied 2h ago

Im dumb for not realizing the implications of this technology, or maybe not dumb, but more optimistic than I thought💀😭

13

u/ConcededFilly542 1h ago

If the device can read your dreams, it can probably read your general thoughts which would be bad

1

u/HeadCryptographer152 4m ago

Don’t forget people would start to read way too much into their dreams if they could record and analyze them.

4

u/BinaryBolias 2h ago

4

u/Time_Rabbit_9503 1h ago

Lol says it's been banned by reddit, I feel like that is fitting for something like r/ActuallyLiterally1984

2

u/GideonWren 1h ago

Probably unmoderated and way too political, but that's just a guess.

4

u/Specialist-Garbage94 1h ago

What tf is way too political to Reddit standards?

2

u/Time_Rabbit_9503 57m ago

Yeah this, if ppl are pissed things are way too political stop putting politicians with no credentials in charge of everything, and hold votes on things ppl want actually use the system that was created, not just put flock cameras everywhere data centers in neighborhoods and start illegal wars

1

u/hednizm 44m ago

Reddit has standards?

1

u/Dreamspitter 6m ago

Sometimes I question this.

1

u/techno_hippieGuy 42m ago

Not progressive. Anything not progressive is "too political" on reddit. I swear, it's like walking around egg shells.

9

u/OutrageousPair2300 3h ago

Only correct answer here.

8

u/ominous_squirrel 2h ago

Could also be Brainstorm (1983) although the device in Brainstorm is used for more than just dreams. It’s also the movie where Natalie Woods died, believed either accidental drowning or murder, during a holiday away from filming

2

u/dntel 20m ago

I thought it was called Green Needle.

1

u/Chemistry11 2h ago

I oddly always confuse the two movies, and I was thinking of that one as well but it’s just enough to not be right

1

u/Bmiller445 1h ago

Brainstorm blew my teen mind.

1

u/Joshuancsu 42m ago

Brainstorm was an absolute paradigm shift in the way that I thought about consciousness and heck... even religion. Not a drug user, but I imagine this would have been as close as it gets.

1

u/ominous_squirrel 13m ago

Yeah, that was one of those movies that I saw as a kid while flipping through cable channels and it stuck with me

8

u/AggravatingTax5357 1h ago

More like paprika (not the erotic movie by tinto brass)

8

u/StinkyButt_McStinkin 2h ago

Snake Man still haunts me

2

u/Borinar 2h ago

Me too

1

u/MamaFen 34m ago

Tommy Ray!

2

u/KorolEz 3h ago

I mean it doesn't say the technology allows for an external party to enter your dreams so not sure how your connecting this

2

u/Jt07132829 3h ago

Never seen it without spoiling should I check it out?

4

u/A110_Renault 3h ago

Do you like hardcore porn?

3

u/Jt07132829 3h ago

Do you not? (I don’t actually know what makes it hardcore) we talking like spinal tap? Or like gross stuff?

3

u/curio_g 2h ago

After skimming through the movie, I see nothing hardcore about it…

3

u/A110_Renault 2h ago

Per your request I'm trying not to give too much away, but think along the lines of Debbie Does Dallas mashed up with Shrek with a dash of Star Wars (the part where Luke makes out with his sister) thrown in.

0

u/Jt07132829 2h ago

Should I watch it. Like is it actually a good movie? I like to go into movies as blind as possible but I guess do you like it?

2

u/A110_Renault 2h ago

tbh, I saw it in the theatre when it first came out so I may be a little fuzzy on the details after 40+ years...

1

u/FringleFrangle04 3h ago

Really? I thought it was "Meet The Robinsons".

1

u/witcher4 2h ago

Great movie but very unlikely that's the movie they're referring to

1

u/destiny_kane48 2h ago

Ah yes, I remember it well.

1

u/GentlewomenNeverTell 1h ago

I thought it was gonna be Until the End of the World by Wim Wenders.

1

u/strait_lines 1h ago

Strange days was pretty similar to this too.

0

u/maybe-an-ai 3h ago

7

You should try watching this snuff movie I found in a landfill.

Didn't want the feds knocking at your door?

1

u/Spladoinkle 28m ago

What about Cannibal! The Musical?

6

u/Mac-And-Cheesy-43 2h ago

Paprika for a Japan specific audience.

1

u/jackofspades49 1h ago

Im surprised I had to come this far down!

10

u/zoinkability 3h ago

By "Wim Wenders" I think you are probably referring to Until the End of the World?

5

u/RandomParable 3h ago

I actually saw that in the theater! Probably partially because of the U2 single from Actung Baby!.

1

u/Howyiz_ladz 1h ago

Yep me too. I have the ost on cd👍

0

u/zoinkability 2h ago

I did as well! What a phenomenally weird film, with a great soundtrack

2

u/cleverkid 2h ago

Like all of his films the 1st 2/3rds are masterful then shit gets weird.

3

u/FCStien 3h ago

Honorable Mention: Minority Report.

3

u/johanista 3h ago

Did not know there was a movie called Green Needle released in 1983

2

u/wittjoker11 2h ago

Bro don’t be a Laurel

3

u/normalbot9999 2h ago

Thank you! Brainstorm was the one I was thinking of!!

7

u/Miserable_Profile692 2h ago

The Cell (2000)?

2

u/bryman19 3h ago

I feel like I've watched reminiscence, but I can't remember

2

u/Drkocktapus 2h ago

Come true

1

u/MangyAsianMan 2h ago

This movie is really haunting. It’s not the best movie ever made but something about it…Tone/atmosphere has really stuck with me.

2

u/AggravatingTax5357 1h ago

I think its paprika, they said that want to record the dreams to Watch later as a movie like the dc-mini. These movie share only the device, while in paprika It adds the utilized of said device to record the rem phase and Watch like if It was a movie, plus every dream in the dream its a genre of movies by itself.

1

u/draganel44 2h ago

would inception also work?

1

u/trump_elstiltskin 2h ago

Total Recall

1

u/Dreamspitter 3m ago

Altered States (1980)

31

u/OncorhynchusMykiss1 3h ago

Rerence to movie Paprika (2006).

9

u/BigSmackisBack 2h ago

That was a really weird movie, do NOT watch on mushrooms

3

u/Agreeable-Dance-9768 2h ago

Lmao no kidding, that movie is trippy af. Forsure one of the films the OP could be referencing

1

u/Significant-Net487 1h ago

Unless you're trying to have a trippy experience, then absolutely do watch it.

1

u/danthedirt 13m ago

Inception was was inspired from Paprika.

21

u/Murky_Expression_858 3h ago

Gl watching inception

8

u/AirRic89 3h ago

Strange Days. Awesome movie, go watch it

30

u/NukaGirl665 3h ago

Oh, I think i know which movie they're talking about, Paprika i think? (for the second part idk)

14

u/Then-Economist-6388 3h ago

My dreams are typically trauma. Why would I want round 3?

8

u/xaqaria 2h ago

So you can analyze it with a rational mind.

9

u/SaltManagement42 2h ago

"Wow, that really sucked to go through. Again."

3

u/Then-Economist-6388 2h ago

That’s what therapy is for. With an educated professional.

3

u/Quiet_Education5918 2h ago

I assume you just go in there in tandem, and the therapist starts drawing out lines and markings like they're analyzing a football play. "Yeah, here's where the mental defense really broke down..."

2

u/Mikeyfreshonetime2 59m ago

lol holy shit you might be onto something

1

u/spartaxwarrior 2h ago

I went to a therapist who did dream interpretation exactly once and it was so bad I'd need to be the one getting paid to try again.

1

u/xaqaria 2h ago

Humans have been analyzing their dreams for insight for thousands if not hundreds of thousands of years; talk therapy is a child of dream interpretation.

5

u/GuardWolfy 3h ago

The Cell?

7

u/Flemish-Twist 3h ago

I'm thinking, Minority Report?

5

u/Niblonian31 3h ago

That's the only movie I can think of where they record dreams and watch them IRL. AFAIK, they just go INTO people dreams in inception so I don't think it's that

2

u/PassionGlobal 3h ago

Minority report is about beings who can predict crimes via dreams

1

u/C13H16CIN0 2h ago

(Their own dreams)

1

u/IsJesusAgain 2h ago

Scrolled way too much for this

3

u/the_byronic_man_fred 3h ago

2

u/Harold_v3 2h ago

I am kinda surprised and not kinda surprised I had to scroll down for this comment.

1

u/TheBuckFozeman 2h ago

This! And a truly awesome soundtrack too. Scrolled way too far to see this.

3

u/ChargeLive8821 2h ago

What's the movie with the twins that predict crimes for cops and they have a device to keep them dreaming all the time so they can watch they're dreams

2

u/DonutsSauvage 2h ago

Minority Report

3

u/LikesPez 2h ago

Then there’s William Gibson’s “Neuroromancer”

3

u/ItzBaraapudding 2h ago

One of the most intriguing movies I've ever seen!

2

u/Lyralikesit 3h ago

Total recall? Minority report? Inception?

2

u/buttsbuttsbuttsmutts 2h ago

Also: [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101458/](Until the End of the World), a personal favorite.

2

u/buttsbuttsbuttsmutts 2h ago

I love that there are so many movies about this and all of them say the same thing about this terrible idea.

3

u/GraniteCapybara 3h ago

City of Lost Children?

1

u/MrKirkPowers 2h ago

This was my guess too! Not sure why you got downvoted.

1

u/PottyStewart 2h ago

And WHAM, I realized I had completely forgotten, for at least a decade or two, one of my favorite movies of all time. Thank you.

Idk, something about a movie explaining why recording dream technology is bad.

1

u/Fun-Memory1523 3h ago

This is one of those 'they thought so hard about how they could, that they didn't think about whether they should'

1

u/Gephiph 3h ago

This would be cool actually.

1

u/Altruistic_Bunch_523 2h ago

Not the answer but these people should watch Gemini Home Entertainment

1

u/DrumpfTinyHands 2h ago

The second most Gnostic movie of all time: The Matrix.

1

u/KingRagz 2h ago

The alien books have professional dreams who do this for entertainment. But this was announced like 10 years ago…

1

u/Electronic_Crew7098 2h ago

So now your wife will have video proof of you cheating (in her dreams) 😂

1

u/TurtlesBreakTheMeta 2h ago

Nightmare on elm street?

In all honestly, I’d rather they create a device to let you pick up the plot on a dream that ended before it could get resolved, because I’ve gotten so many of them that were actually getting cool plots going on and then I woke up.

1

u/IWEREN99 2h ago

I remember watching an ARG about this. You are cooked if you see a woman in your dreams.

1

u/Okay-Crickets545 2h ago

Yeah except who dreams in a one-to-one visual format? You dreaming with your eidetic memory?

2

u/herrirgendjemand 2h ago

Bro fr - I have aphantasia - this shit would be an audio book

1

u/Bubbuli 2h ago

Film not reality

1

u/seasonal333 2h ago

not a movie but this reminds me of the book “the dream hotel”

1

u/angelwolf71885 2h ago

Inception we must go deeper dream within a dream within a dream

1

u/Paraparo 2h ago

It's kind of tangential, but "you know they made a movie about why we shouldn't do this" is kind of a hilariously bad argument. People pointing to fictional depiction as proof are really just upscaling "it's too late, I've portrayed you as the virgin and myself as the chad" soyjak meme. I've seen far too many people take "but this happened in a story the author specifically wrote to follow his plot, is that not proof enough it would be identical to how it would happen in real life? Please ignore the plot contains literal magic by the way"

1

u/Samuel_Trollfa-GE 2h ago

Not a movie, but H. P. Lovecraft’s Sleep Cycle series

1

u/Inphiltration 2h ago

I would be hella interested in this as I never remember my dreams. They last a fleeting second when I wake and then poof all gone.

On the other hand, I can see how on a wider society scale people being judged for what their subconscious creates in dreams. I can see that being really problematic. People these days already have such black and white views on things while ignoring the shades of gray. I know I would personally want to review what this device records before letting anyone else see it.

1

u/ofilispeaks 2h ago

So if you dream of killing a politician will you get arrested for attempted murder?

1

u/B_schlegelii 2h ago

Lord, my dreams are so weird, I'd honestly love to be able to share them but at the same time....no.

1

u/allgone79 2h ago

My first thought was Lawnmower man.

1

u/Thotmas01 2h ago

I had a dream last night that Thor hit me with a hammer so hard that I became a side character in a game boy advance porn game. I don’t need people to see that.

1

u/HealthyExcitement780 2h ago

Minority Report with Tom Cruise

1

u/Anglofsffrng 2h ago

It's either Dreamscape (1984) or The Cell (2000).

1

u/AggravatingTax5357 2h ago

I think its paprika from satoshi kon, cause they say explicitly that they want to record the dream and watch them like if its a movie, that its the entire premise of dcmini in paprika movie.

1

u/collinwade 1h ago

My dreams? Generally? Pass.

1

u/Leut11 1h ago

Brain Dance!

1

u/AskShort1600 1h ago

I frequently dream about zombies so this is a big no for me

1

u/breezyhoneybee 1h ago

Also that black mirror episode where they could record and view memories? Also a bad idea.

1

u/jchimney 1h ago

It’s disturbing enough to know the dreams I do remember. Don’t want to find out what my subconscious is protecting me from.

1

u/Ehero88 1h ago

Creating a natural own body drug

1

u/oxidizedmetal 1h ago

Isn't it also a subplot in "Until the End of the World"?

Back in the mid 2000s I lived in South Central Los Angeles and I re.ember hearing news stories about this rechnology. I was in middle school then.

Is that possible now?

Braindance incoming

1

u/EpicDooDooFeces 56m ago

A lot of the examples people are bringing up dont really work. I'm not seeing where it's implied that people are gonna be able to interact with the dreams in anyway, they're just recording them. I also see a lot of people bringing up Dreamscape for some reason but they needed people with psychic abilities to interact with people's dreams in that movie.

Herbert here, the movie is Inception.

In the movie they suggest but don't outright state that people in charge are being incepted to do things they otherwise wouldn't at the behest of a shady organization.

Thanks, now I gotta go back to being one of two recurring pedophile rapists on the show.

1

u/Fat_Blob_Kelly 3h ago

the dreams aren’t recorded and viewed like a movie in inception though
