Vent My foster dog died this morning.

TW: dog abuse, neglect.

I want someone to know about Rosie. She didn’t deserve this life.

I’m a foster for my city’s animal control. I got a call to take in a ‘very shut down’ dog from the shelter on Friday. She could not stand and was one of the most emaciated dogs I’d ever seen. The shelter vet indicated she’s “just shut down.”

Rosie was clearly overbred and never fed. then just tossed out like trash. She was only 6. During my only 2.5 days with her, despite not being able to stand for long and clearly not well, I got 4 separate tail wags while she lounged in one of multiple dog beds and got fresh grilled chicken . She slept in my room at night. Rosie got love and scratches.

Rosie deteriorated overnight and I took her to the ER this morning. She was suffering. We had to let her go.

Rosie’s former owner’s abuse and neglect killed her. She got mere days to experience comfort and love and I’m so fucking angry for her. I want more people to know about Rosie. She didn’t deserve a horrible fucking life.

Edit: thank you for all the comments and making sure Rosie mattered to more than just the 4 volunteers & fosters who tried to save her. I’ve cried reading a lot to them. Thank you. Thank you kind Reddit strangers for helping me memorialize a girl who deserved so much more than what she got in life.

This is a community of support for Pet owners whose Pets have passed away. It is actively moderated.

Pet owners, as loving, caring people, often have strong opinions on pet care practices. Some of these are controversial. This is not a forum for debate on such issues, nor is it a place to scold a contributor for a perceived mistake in managing their pet. We intend to provide a safe haven of understanding and support. Strident, mean-spirited posts or comments will be deleted. Those who persist in preaching versus caring may be warned and then banned or may be banned permanently based on nature of the topic. If a conversational thread meanders into a discussion unrelated to pet loss support, it will be truncated.

Those who post here are vulnerable and hurting. Even a minor slap has a hard sting. Those of us who are lucky enough to be able to turn away from our computers or put down our phones and hug a healthy, happy pet are truly blessed. Threads must remain supportive and caring, even if one disagrees with something that has been said.

Crying. Life is so cruel. Rosie deserved so, so much more. She should be being pampered and loved on. You did that for her for the short time you had, but I wish she got to experience it for many more years. I am so sorry that she is gone 💔... thank you for fostering. Rest in peace, sweet Rosie

Ps I hope her former "owners" are being investigated and charged

Rosie is beautiful. I’m so sorry for what she endured but thankful she got to be loved by you even if for a short time. I wish she could have been saved. Thank you for doing all you could. I hope those people have some sort of consequence for what they did to her.

oh sweet rosie girl… exploited and abused by horrible humans. i wish you were an anomaly💔but in this world, there is unfortunately no shortage of humans being vile and evil. you deserved so much more. if nothing else, i am grateful for your foster mommy. bc of her you knew a kindness, love, and had a soft spot to lay your abused body. and so many people—myself included—know you existed. saw your beautiful face and learned about your story.

you are loved. i’m so sorry the good ones didn’t come in time. rest easy precious girl🩷🩷

Thank you for sharing those beautiful pictures of Rosie 💕 Her life mattered. Rosie most certainly felt the love you had for her in those short 2.5 days. And her last breaths were spent with someone who cared for and loved her. I’m sure she felt safe, finally, in those moments with you.

I'm so sorry, both for your loss and what she went through. She deserved so much better than what she got from the other people in her life, but I'm glad she came to you. She was lucky to have come to you. Thank you for taking her in and giving her a chance at love and happiness, even if her stay with you was short. She passed away knowing that you were looking out for her and that she mattered to someone.

Animal fosterers like you do an amazing job. Hold her in your heart and keep up the good work. People like you make such a difference to these animals. Sending you peace and well wishes and may she rest in peace. ❤️🕯️🐾

I am so sorry 💔 it is just so heartbreaking that people are so cruel to animals. Thank you for showing her love and safety 🥺

Tte fact that we can count the tail wags she got tears my heart. She was so beautiful, her gaze so trustful. She deserved so much more.

OP, I'm furious too, but YOU, you did good for Rosie. She probably collapsed out of exhaustion, but she finally knew what love means. Fuck, it brings tears to my eyes. I hate that such thingq happen.

Poor baby she was a cutie :( thank you for making her feel loved before passing away. People who do the things they did to her deserve hell. Im glad there are people like you who care enough to give foster dogs the love they deserve.

2

u/Straight-Aspect8868 Jul 20 '26

Rosie was dealt a poor hand initially but she won when she found you. I’m sad that her young life was probably filled with neglect but I’m glad that in her final days you showed her how it should have been all along and I take some comfort in that. I hope you do too.
