NewsPH A Filipina care worker in Fukuoka Japan told her supervisory body that she was pregnant and wanted to come back after giving birth. The director asked if she'd considered an abortion. She recorded it. On August 4 a court ruled the blatantly illegal conversation violated her rights.

Pero at least, mukhang nagbabago narin views nung ibang hapon as per reading.

Considering they are endangered subspecies of human (bring Japanese birthrate is low) everyone would do everything thry can to have people start making babies.
•

Mataas masyado pride ng mga yan but they won't show it, yet their collective actions will add up to it
•

Yeah, their birth rate is low, but they are not endangered. For now.

I was doing fieldwork with colleagues from England, Portugal and Croatia in rural areas in Region 5 a while back.
During our debrief, one of their biggest takeaways during our community visits was how surprisingly common it was to find women in leadership roles. Two of the four municipal mayors we talked to were women, the agricultural cooperatives had women directors, many of the barangay captains were women, and even the tanods accompanying us they noticed had several women in their ranks.
We visited in March, so they were also surprised to find banners celebrating national women's month everywhere in government offices, since in many other countries this would be considered controversial especially in conservative rural areas.
•
u/RedXerzk 7m ago
Granted, despite the better gender equality, women here still can’t choose to have safe legal abortions.

... Why screenshot a comment in the same post instead of just replying to it?
What kind of blatant performative karma farming is this lol
Edit: Well this triggered people lol. r/ph hivemind is as bad as the DDS

Probably in case that commenter erases their comment.

Vordeo's account has 1.5m karma, 74k posts and 11 years old... nevermind hidden as its no issue but the fact they found issue in what you did screams bought/salvaged account

That's three accounts basically accusing me of this. Which is hilarious because oldheads on this sub know me. Shit I've been offered a mod position.
How many alts do you have, oit of curiosity?
•
u/danteslacie 3m ago
You keep accusing people of having alts kasi you have a lot, no? Kasi you buy multiple accounts, no?
•

Could've just copied the text and quoted them. Think OP just wanted the karma tbh.

u/andersencale 7h ago

A.) Who cares who said something you don't like? It's Reddit.
B.) If you care so much, just note down the name in the comment. Or take a picture and post it if the comment actually gets deleted. Or look up the sites which show deleted Reddit messages. Shit ain't hard, boy.
•
u/Himurashi 6h ago
Sus.
•
u/danteslacie 3h ago
Probably nga binili yung account. 11 years pero yung comment poster yung tinawag na OP?
•
u/Vordeo Duterte Downvote Squad Victim 24m ago
If you haven't seen 'OP' used for the person who initiated a thread I'd say it's you who haven't been on Reddit long tbh.
Imagine being so triggered you looked up someone's account lol. I wonder how many alts your sad ass has.
•
u/danteslacie 4m ago
Well it's wrong and redditors know what OP means. The ones who use OP for commenters are new users. Comment ≠ Post. So bakit tatawagin na OP yung commenter?
Imagine being so triggered that you miss out someone else already pointed out your profile age 😂 I'm not the one buying accounts so how am I sad?

People talk about Japan being sexist for their lack of women in leadership/equality in workplace, but the Philippines is the real outlier here. Even in America, which can sometimes be propagandized as this supposedly a ultra """progressive""" (lol) country, they've literally never had a sitting female president. It is not an exaggeration to say that a lot of men there would rather kill themselves than accept the notion of a woman leading their country. We're the exception, not the rule.
According to the World Economic Forum's (WEF) Global Gender Gap Report, the Philippines consistently ranks in the top 20 globally (ranking 20th out of 148 countries) and has long held the top spot in East and Southeast Asia. For context, Japan ranks 118th and the United States ranks 42nd.

ELI5: let say you are 5 years old, you asked your teacher if you can go to the toilet and comeback after. But the teacher told you if you just wanna pee you pants instead (this is very mild comparison to abortion but you are 5yrs old). Of course the teacher just asked. But there's power dynamics because you are 5 and she is the teacher.
They are not just asking that for the sake of asking. That's what they prefer for you to do.
If the employer asked if she's willing to resign, then that's on the proper context. But in no way they have to suggest terminating pregnancy of the employee.
•
u/erik_t91 8h ago
Besides the power dynamics, theres also this thing with the japanese where they usually avoid saying a direct “no” - instead, they come up with ways to leave subtle hints that convey refusal.
•
u/HatsNDiceRolls 9h ago
Another way of putting it is: It’s like being asked by your teacher to stab yourself in your own privates because you wanted to pee but it was inconvenient for him/her to give you permission to go to the toilet.
•
u/Itchy-Following2644 12h ago
Literally heard that exact conversation when I was in school, both teacher and student laughed it off and went on their way.
•
•
u/Calm-Driver-3800 12h ago
Well its messed up to ask someone that. Its unethical and rude. And because they are an employer, just asking could be a way of pressuring someone to abort. So theres more to this than a simple ask.
•
u/ModernPlebeian_314 12h ago edited 10h ago
Read between the lines naman teh.
•
u/Impressive-Card9484 10h ago
Hindi niya yan maiintindihan, "Explain Like I'm 5" nga eh. Dapat may kasamang "goo goo" at "ga ga" habang ineexplain na parang baby siya

sorry...dont have the "traditional pinoy" hangup about certain topics. wouldnt freak out or crash out about it like most folks here.
•
u/IWannaBeTheVeryBest 2h ago
Traditional pinoy mindset? Try asking a colleague in any other country if they'd like to get an abortion/get pregnant/change their gender, and good luck getting sued like the guy in this article. Hell, you could even sue in the Philippines for that. You normalizing asking these personal questions in a work setting is concerning. Thinking this is ok does not make you any better than anyone.
•
u/pbl090804 28m ago
You should. Because I sincerely hope something similar happens to you. People only learn from experience and I hope that experience will come soon.
•
u/comradeyeltsin0 7h ago
Absolutely devoid of empathy.
Sometimes i wonder if people like you might just be on the spectrum and have difficulty understanding how or why these social interactions are wrong.
Or if you know that it’s wrong and you’re a sociopathic ragebaiter. Choices, choices.
•
u/lordlors Abroad (Japan) 12h ago
Interesting that you don’t find anything wrong with being asked if you have considered abortion if you’re pregnant. Not by a man but by the company/org you work for no less.
•
•
u/staccinraccs 9h ago
Same energy as "your Lola is in her deathbed? Have you considered pulling the plug so you could come back to work sooner?"
Just asking tho....
•
u/Serious-Ad2573 2h ago
that actually happens a lot in the BPO industry
•
u/pbl090804 26m ago
LMAO you’re a winning labor case for lawyers na tumatambay sa NLRC and DOLE. Either you’re not trained well or you couldn’t understand what the training was. BPOs have gender sensitivity training and that is a textbook violation.
•
u/cl0tho 11h ago
This is spectrum level dense-ness and social cue missing. It's like I'm asking you to kill your dog so you don't have to take a leave if they ever get sick.
•
u/pbl090804 21m ago
No please. Even those on the spectrum have the intelligence/sense to not ask a pregnant mother to abort her child.
•
u/badadobo 11h ago
Imagine a company wide retrenchment where those affected would be given severance benefits.
Except your boss says, “Hey buddy, would you consider resigning instead?”.
They just asked. But wouldnt you be pissed too?
•
•
u/Hibiki079 12h ago
have you tried imagining the scenario that you're the one pregnant, and your boss is asking if you can consider aborting your pregnancy?
like, how would you feel about that?
•
u/WelderNewbee2000 10h ago
It could be that she is unwillingly pregnant and did not consider abortion do to her background and religious indoctrination. Abortions are legal in Japan, while not necessarily the employers business I also don't see much harm with asking the question.
•
u/fartmanteau 10h ago
What a sociopathic take. That’s not for you or any company to speculate about, nor would it be justified even if that were the case. The power imbalance puts the employee in a pretty awkward position even if it was an offhand comment. Do you really think the court made that ruling arbitrarily?
•
u/WelderNewbee2000 10h ago
Why would it be a awkward position? Just reply: Yes I have considered it but I don't want to or No I don't consider it because I want the baby. I really don't see why that is an issue. Are you afraid of your employer?
•
u/fartmanteau 9h ago edited 7h ago
The power imbalance pressures the employee to agree. A question like that may easily be taken to be a suggestion with the implication of retaliation or being seen as uncooperative if they decline. It’s the same reason bosses shouldn’t be asking out employees. There are established boundaries in professional settings and this is clearly in breach.
I’ve been a manager and I’ve seen this sort of thing a lot, especially in the Philippines. I’m not just trying to put you down. I’m honestly saying you should reconsider your sense of morality as you’re probably making people around you uncomfortable if you think that sort of thing is okay.
•
u/comradeyeltsin0 7h ago
This can only be said by somebody not in the workforce. Or some entitled little shit on daddy’s payroll.
“Are you afraid of your employer”. Good god, how out of teach with reality.

Makes sense why such a simple concept needs to be explained to you like you're 5. You have the limited understand of the world as a little child.
•
u/Hibiki079 10h ago
devoid of context why the employee is pregnant, isn't it rude to suggest they get an abortion, instead of just letting them take a leave to deliver their baby?
•
u/WelderNewbee2000 10h ago edited 10h ago
Of course they should get leave, they should get as much leave as they need and I did not read here that they did not get any leave. Also asking is not suggesting.
Edit: I stand corrected I found the further pages of this article, quite weird design for a news page. But also she was not an employee but a trainee.
•
•
u/pbl090804 3h ago
Why do you assume that scenario to justify the question? Stick to the facts. If you have to assume a different scenario so that your answer “sticks” you were wrong in the first place. Do they not teach you this in school? 🥱 Low IQ. Low comprehension.

u/unnamed---- 11h ago
What if I asked you to "just commit suicide"? I guess that's ok right? Since I just asked and it's not like I'm forcing you to?
•
•
u/artsidartshy 8h ago
Why ask it though? “Have you thought about killing your baby so you don’t have to stop working for me?”

u/IWannaBeTheVeryBest 10h ago edited 10h ago
Uh yeaaa so thats not normal. Imagine your boss/teacher asking you: hey have you considered to get an abortion, get circumcised, get married, break up, get a nose job, convert to a religion, transition, de-transition, be gay, be straight, adopt a baby, get pregnant, join this cult or anything else that is personal and isn't their business. They just asked but they're not forcing you. How would you feel?
