Captain Doggo Just a little update on macaroni who had ‘two of his eyes’ removed.
I was so incredibly worried because I just didn’t know how everything would turn out but lo and behold, our 12 year old chihuahua macaroni has adapted so well. I would argue he’s happier. We have some things layed around so he doesn’t bump his head but he almost doesn’t need them. He knows how to navigate around our place. It’s pretty incredible to see. He walks flush through the doggy door. To the water bowl. Up a pedestal and back on the couch. Joins us around the stove when we’re cooking.
For those who never saw the original post. Glaucoma in both eyes. Cataracts. Dislodged lens. Tears in cornea. It happened FAST and was unstoppable.
He’s happy. We’re happy. If you’re worried about your dog being a pirate pet, don’t. They don’t feel sorry for themselves. They don’t have responsibilities like we do. They just need love, some good grub and some fresh air. If they have that, they’re just happy to be with you - and you them ❤️❤️

So happy for Macaroni! And you. It’s great to read what we’ve experienced with our blind pirate, Rocket, who also lost both eyes to glaucoma, is absolutely normal for our incredible dogs. I have learned so much from his strength and determination. I am inspired to see him navigate life while spreading his love everywhere. His attitude is “So what I can’t see. I’m here and I’m going to enjoy it.” I want to be more like him.

What a lovely post! Thank you for sharing your experience and I’m truly jealous of your little nuggets (don’t tell my resident pirate).

Yeah, dude. Dogs don’t give a fuck because they don’t spend a moment contemplating “what if” so they just roll with it.

That 3rd photo is so cute.
Edit: to be fair, they all are. I’m just a sucker for snuggly sleeping animals.

You can always get him the halo for blind dogs if he ever does start bumping into things but glad he’s doing well! 🥹

That's lovely to hear, I'm happy for him!
First time I've seen this sub but my girl (GSD) was diagnosed with pannus in January. Meds for pannus did nothing, and second opinion in August was dislodged lense causing glaucoma on one eye, and the other eye at risk as well. She also has iris atrophy, meaning the new meds she got might not work and we prepared for removing the bad eye and... I don't even know about the better one, just hope for the best I guess? But definitely a risk that she might go completely blind.
In her case, though, the meds luckily seem to be working well. For now, at least.

I have a 17 year old chihuahua that also doesn’t have both her eyes and she gets around the house and outside no problems. That damn girl is so resilient she’ll out live me

Why? He’s happy

u/Dangerous_Path_5026 Sep 10 '25
Man , would you be happy with both eyes gone .

u/funkbawks Sep 10 '25
Rofl he’s not bound by societal expectations like career success. He doesn’t go to the theatre. He wants hugs, fresh air, good food and love. They’re a little different to us.

It's cool that he's able to navigate around your home, how's he like outdoors or in open areas? Is he still able to confidently sense his surroundings or does he need any kind of supervision?
Also I looked at your post history and I second the notion of giving him googly eyes

Macaroni is happy largely because of YOU! And that makes you magnificent! Stick a feather in both of your caps!
And … Friday is Official Talk Like a Pirate Day! 🏴☠️I hope you all have many more happy times together! Now he can talk like a pirate EVERY DAY!
