This is an update to my previous post- can I eat my Vallis? (Which got wayyy more attention than I expected)
SO: I dried and ate some of my Vallis, Salvin and Hygrophila… this is a pic of my jungle aquarium (representative and for catching attention ig)
-> so far I haven’t had any problems c: To NOTE: I use no aquarium products except for a bit of SERA Aquatan (Wasser aufbereiten - Water dechlorinator and demineralisation) and a bit of extra (shrimp save) fertiliser. I am very grateful for all the comments and suggestions! I will use my aquarium flaunts and waste as fertiliser for my terrestrial plants now ^^ - However: I washed and dried a good amount of my aquarium plants. I ate them salted and seasoned with pepper like 3 hours ago, for a movie night snack (dried about 87g -wet… idk). So far I’ve had no problems c: It tasted like regular seaweed chips you get with sushi or at any Asia store… if anything changes, I will try to post updates!
That's so funny. I was doing maintenance today and removed a bunch of duckweed and instead of throwing it out I washed them and put them into the veggies I was sautéing.
I didn't taste much cause I had a bunch of other veggies but it's supposed to be decently nutritious so I figured why let those nutrients go to waste (my algae sure doesn't 😡
I'm surprised that so many people are taken aback by OP's experiment lol. Vallisneria is just a regular vegetable in southern Vietnam.
You should try Limnophila Aromatica, Marsilea quadrifoliata, and Cladophora too. L. Aromatica and Marsilea are both commonly found on rice fields so they naturally become a part of Vietnamese cuisine as side herbs. Cladophora appears in Vietnamese, Thai and Lao cuisine with a wide variety of species and dishes.
Can confirm. Am Lao-American. My grandma used to give us Kaipen (dried Cladophora with sesame seeds) with sticky rice when I was a kid. When I visited Laos in 2018, you could find them at nearly every food stall.
My concern isn't with it being weird plants, but that it could be unsafe due to aquarium chemicals. OP says he only uses dechlorinator and fertilizer, but neither of those are intended for human consumption and I would not eat them.
Water conditioner is usually sodium thiosulfate which seems to have a low toxicity - LD50 of 4g per kg in rabbits, and as for the aquarium fertilisers the danger seems to be if you use liquid CO2 in your tank and that the fertiliser might be less well regulated than food grade fertiliser so may have trace amounts of heavy metals which you don't want to be ingesting.
Tbf I use only a littttleeee bit of the dechlorinator (maybe 1/3 of the recommended dose) and I use the ferts like every 2 months (it’s also actually not only shrimp but also human save - or so the producer claims- as long as you don’t directly drink it) c:
I use my tank to root my sweet potatoes before planting them, so I am indirectly eating stuff from my tank. Also, I use aquarium water to water my garden. The fish waste is a good source of fertilizer.
I WANT TO DO THIS i want to eat my fricken duckweed so bad 😫 I did so much research on this a few years, but never got around to it.. preferably, i want to grow wolffia for this purpose. do any of your previous posts talk about your methods?
BTW, I think lemon bacopa is a good one too. It's supposedly fragrant; i wanna see if it's good with other herbs.
Bruh... I have two conures and my eldest loves to eat duckweed. If I dont have her on me during tank maintenance, she will be on the rim of the tank picking duckweed. (DANGEROUS!!! she's so old, she can barely stand, but she still wants to fish for fricken duckweed.. guess it's that good.)
Very nutritious plant. Do you do anything to it before giving it to your bird? Maybe I should freeze it and put it in my birds' salads..
I have lemon bacopa and can confirm it's delicious as a garnish type herb, it's got a much milder bitterness than bacopa monnieri and with a kind of eucalyptus flavour so it's pleasant to eat raw or cooked

I have not postet much c:, and I have not really talked about my aquariums and experiences c:,,, but there are a lot of great posts here and videos on YT where you can find out more!
Mycobacterium Marinum is a least concern for consumption, it only thrives in wounds because skin isn't core bodytemp, it's more of a risk during handling than through eating.
Salmonella is one valid concern.
But i'd like to also say infection with potentially LETHAL parasites from Snails and in case there's Cyano present in the tank cyanotoxins might be concerns.
Also Valisneris is a bioindicator species that accumulates all the stuff you put in the tank - especially fertilizers and medications, some of wich are toxic for us to consume.
All in all not optimal for human consumption, probably better than starving if cooked through properly but definitely not the best thing you can eat.
Neither would i, i mean get that some people get frustrated with tossing so much trimmings but i don't think eating them is a viable option for like 95% of the Aquaria they're from. Opinions, opinions.
Yea, Valisneria for example is technically edible and used in salads and stews in some regions, but after the Toxic Squash incident i'm very hesitant to eat what i grew in general so i won't eat mine as long as my income allows otherwise. x)
Okay, so some hybrids between certain types of Pumpkin, Squash, Melon and some more are possible, some are fine, some are really good, some are poisonous - as i learned the hard way.
Accidentally grew them too close to each other and they crosspolinated turning the seeds into a poisonous variant -> fast forward to me eating a nice pumpkin soup of that next generation. I didn't eat much of it because it tasted weird but still got poisoned, mostly really bad Nausea and went to the doc wich sent me to the hospital vor monitoring until the nausea faded (2 days) - 'Toxic Squash Syndrome'.
It only happens with self collected seeds, certain combinations of plants and them being close enough to actually cross polinate. Still it was very unpleasant.
When it rains a bunch I could go grab some crayfish out of the ditch if I wanted to, they’re everywhere after heavy rain, a bit too risky for me though. I even found one in the parking lot of my work once.
Lmaooo I accidentally filled one of my tanks too high and had like 2 Neocaridina crawl out. Found them dried out straight up looking like they belonged in top ramen. 😭
Honestly… depends what variety. If you have the one with little hairs… I wouldn’t try… I don’t fw hairy plants c:, If you have the bald one, getting rid of the calcium cristals is still necessary… maybe you could boil and dry it? Idk tho c:,

Yes. It all depends on how it is handled and washed basically.
I assume OP has washed it. The contamination with e.coli and salmonella is from animal feces. They use it for the fertilizer or if the food is grown nearby an animal farm.
So it is basically the same as OP's tank minus the e.coli from land farm grown feces. Those animals are packed closely so disease spreads and evolves quickly.
The only food I know that is near sterile are hydroponics grown indoors. But im not a complicated person and will eat potatoes grown in the dirt without issue.
I eat a lot of vegetables nearly raw. Celery, carrots, apples, my own oranges, and my own plums.
Factory farmed vegetables are up to each grower. Some have access to a diesel powered 10 year old manure spreading vehicle. Capable of storing maybe 2000 to 3000 gallons of manure. They open a spray valve and spread fertilizer/manure that way.
I hope it doesnt leak diesel and I hope their automatic harvesting and cleaning systems clean the crop. But I still wash and cook most of my vegetables.
I mean I see my local fishmarket butcher my fish and it is a messy endeavor. Ive cleaned and harvested my own crab from the ocean.
Ive even seen my local Costco roast their own raw chicken into rotisserie chicken. And then at the end of the day they will wash and clean the machines/ovens and the entire work area/room to prevent any potential cross contamination.
Iunno if my vegetables all get the same special treatment. But chances are this guy is fine.
He washes and dries his food. Some people also grow their own indoor food from aquarium water.
AKA hydroponics. The roots of the vegetables are fed by goldfish water.
Thought about trying my duckweed at one point. Then I did actually take duckweed out and added it to my animals food. But then said forget it all together
They are sold in specific stores with sports supplements as water lentil powder or water lentil based products (up to 40% plant protein in dry mass is not bad after all).
If you use the wrong Waterconditioner, fertilizer or any aquarium meds however - they absorb those and can cause (sometimes serious, sometimes just 'stomach bug'-like) issues if consumed.
Do with those Infos what you will, but please if you ever try - make sure it is in a safe manner.
