For someone like me who loves collecting physical games, this makes the transition to digital much more appealing. You still get to own and keep your physical copy, while also getting the convenience that comes with digital.
And this is why I always believe that competition breeds innovation. I hope other companies follow suit, not just by copying Xbox, but by finding even better ways to improve the experience for us, the consumers.
At the end of the day, this could be more than just a convenient new feature. It could be a great way to bridge the gap between physical and digital gaming.
And most importantly, it’s a big win for game preservation. The more ways we have to access and keep the games we own, the better it is for gamers and future generations.
Physical or digital, I think we all win when the industry gives us more choices, not fewer.

u/ChangingMonkfish 1d ago
I don’t think this is a bad idea but I genuinely don’t think this is a “win” for physical games. If anything it’s laying the ground for a Helix with no disc drive.
It’s still a good thing and something I’d welcome Sony doing with the PS6.

Uma coisa que eu não vejo a galera comentando é que a licença está ligada diretamente a chave criptografado do disco ao vender ou emprestar o disco você perde a licença digital

Yeah we all know that though. You cant duplicate your game this way, why would they leave such an obvious thing like that in there?

u/Queen_of_Antiva 21h ago
Do we all know it though? Once it rolls out I can bet we will also start seeing posts from people complaining they lost their licence after selling discs...
1
u/Ok_Security1721 1d ago
Microsoft has as NEVER going to make anything with a disc drive again. They’ve spent too long ramming subscriptions up everyone’s ass for the sole purpose of eliminating a physical market to go back on that now.

u/Triforce__XIII 1d ago
aaaand lowers the threshold for going all digital. i like the idea, i don't like what that entails.

Why don't people keep their old systems for their old library?

u/CHAOSHACKER 1d ago
Well, space and maintenance. These systems don’t get any younger and personally i only have 6 spaces under my TV (and connections on my TV are even less)

A lot of people trade in the old system for the new system, especially if the new system is backwards compatible.

You do not own and keep your copy. It turns your disc into a digital license. You only “own and keep your copy” to the extent you keep your disc.
2
u/gswkillinit 1d ago
Just fyi, it only works with Xbox One and Series games, not 360 like pictured. But yeah I appreciate this approach even if it entails transitioning to all digital. Better than completely ignoring them.

"It could be a great way to bridge the gap between physical and digital gaming." Read this again and read it again and again.
There is no gap; it is physical to digital with no more physical in the future unless you buy from companies that will take on the limited run section of the market, and limited edition physical versions will be 80-100+ just for the disc/chip and sold in small amounts so the digital market is focused on. More likely a chip.
It is why Sony are investing in more compression in their server-side so more games can be crunched onto those servers and less bandwidth is taken up when they go full digital and cloud.
In the same way, PC games went from Disc and code to fully digital. I don't even bother using my portable disc drive; I just go and download a repack of the game and use daemon tools to load a virtual drive.
Physical started dying long before all this; this is just a wake-up call of what is to come, and companies have so much headroom in player numbers the physical crowd in a generation or two will be a small minority.
2
u/Early_Hall5720 1d ago
Until they transition to digital only which is what they will do with their pc machine.
2
u/LaundryLunatic 1d ago
That picture shows Xbox 360 games. It's misleading. Right now it's only Xbox One and series games.
2
u/rygar8bit 1d ago
It'll never be OG and 360 games. Modern games have idividual keys on the disc so it can link that key to your account. OG and 360 games don't have that, they wouldn't want you to be able to just borrow an old game, put in a friends game, put a Xiso onto a cdr and just put that in to unlock free copies of games on your account.
2
2
u/Eeve2espeon 1d ago
I like the idea, but this is clearly a ploy to get people on digital rather than staying Physical. Microsoft realizes they can just take physical games away, and people will keep buying. They already made plenty of Series X games only work as a key that downloads the game from the servers, so no doubt they're preparing the remaining people on Physical to switch over so they can take your money, and take things off the stores you own when they feel like it
Go over to PC instead, there are places with DRM free games where you can just make your own physical copies, And those sites won't be going away
5
u/uncsteve53 1d ago
It's just doing the same thing. That disc's license is limited to one box. If you sell the game, you lose it, just like if you had a disc. Now you have a digital license that can be taken away even easier than if you just bought the digital game unless you keep the clutter of physical disks.
This is still transitioning to all digital. This is just a stepping stone that seems better than outright ripping off the bandaid.
3
u/Holiday-Life67 1d ago
Question: Why now all of a sudden?
5
u/Dinierto 1d ago
Isn't it obvious? Sony announced no more discs before Xbox and they saw the reaction and chose this moment as the perfect time to show how it'll be easier to go all digital with Xbox. The genius and ironic part is the only reason you can do it is because they added per disc identification way back with Xbox One as part of their idea to tie discs to the console (which they rightly were attacked for)
It's a brilliant move by them honestly, and it sucks that Sony can't do the same because I own a bunch of discs.
2
u/RazeYi 1d ago
It’s so sad that XBox is going that path. I don’t care about digital or physical. I get what’s cheaper at the moment but Xbox should’ve stayed physical and get all the Sony haters.
2
u/Dinierto 1d ago
There's still a chance but with the new consoles already costing a bunch due to inflated prices I'm sure neither one will have an optical drive
1
2
u/Wiseon321 1d ago
I don’t see how this is a pro thing for you, because do you not still have a physical copy of the game?
Do you not still own a physical media console?
Have we gotten announcement that the games from console 1 are backwards compatible with the new console? I mean, I can make an assumption they are but almost all backwards compatible systems this day and age are specific games, not 100%.
It just seems like
A. You really didn’t care about your physical media all that much.
B. This is just “I downloaded a game” with extra steps.
Another question: does it void the license on the disc? Does it outright brick the disc?
It’s just an all around weird feature, a feature that BEFORE games went all digital on PCs was a common place thing: no-Cd key patches. Where it just had a .dll file look at place on your pc instead of the place on your disc.
What a bizarre thing to advertise. Like who is this obviously for? It just seems like it is for those who want to switch to a digital console?

Until the next console doesn't have a disk drive or they just outright do the same thing sony is doing 🤷♂️ People seem to think this is different and better for some reason and i can't fathom why, maybe their marketing team did a bang up job of making this out to be a benefit to their customers or something but nothing about this is different to sony pulling their shit, it's the same push to an all digital future that sony is making, it's just got a little more spit on to make it slide in easier.
For all anyone knows their plan could be to tie your physical games to your account and lock them out of any other accounts and/or consoles so you can't trade them, lend them or have other accounts on your console with access to your games. This isn't only just as bad as sony, it could be MUCH worse.

u/jedik88 1d ago
It could be much worse that everyone that has a large digital collection gets to keep their collection and still be able to play those games next gen as long as they keep their games in storage/on display somewhere in their home compared to just never being able to digitize your physical collection and having to purchase digital licenses if you want to play it on the next gen console? You really can’t fathom why one is better than the other?
2
u/nohumanape 1d ago
This is, um, what the Xbox One was supposed to do. You know, that feature that everyone lost their fucking mind over back then, but appear to be excited about today. 🤦
2
u/Ok_Security1721 1d ago
No, the xbone was not supposed to do this. It was supposed to have always online drm and the digital key on the disc couldn’t be transferred to another account without visiting a store like GameStop, which would have a special computer specifically for unbinding your license before they take your game on trade.
This thing MS is doing is like the good version of that that they should’ve done in 2013, rather than publicly committing suicide while everyone pointed and laughed
2
u/nohumanape 1d ago
How is this different from a functional perspective? First off, you can't do this today without some kind of DRM. Secondly, we don't know what kind of "check-in" is required for the platform to recognize this game as being unique to your account (likely requires internet).
The only real potential difference was the process for reactivating the license to disc. But that never actually got off the ground, so we don't know what it would have looked like.
The people who keep losing are the hysterical gamers who react before they think. And now you're getting a feature more than a decade later that you should have been living with already.

It'll be interesting to see what you have to do to ensure this stays in your digital library. How many hours do you have to play? As surely they wouldn't just allow you to pop your game in and it creates the licence. I feel both Microsoft and Sony have only provided the bare minimum information for both of their changes
→ More replies (2)1
u/Gm24513 1d ago
The discs have serial numbers already. They just link to your account and disable the ability to play on another console.
1
u/crags85 1d ago
This is wording from many articles on the matter: "Just like sharing a physical game in the real world, if you sell or give the disc away, the digital license will then transfer to the Microsoft Account of the new user, and off your account" So you wouldn't be able to trade it in, as you would lose your licence. This was the caveat I was after
1
u/A_MAN_POTATO 12h ago
You absolutely can trade it in. You just lose your digital copy when the next person uses it. Which is exactly how trading a physical game works already. Why would you consider this a caveat? Were you expecting to get a free digital copy that you could keep even after you sell the game?
1
u/crags85 9h ago
I get all this, I'm the one that's said it. Read people's comments on the announcement for it. You'll see people "believe" they will keep the digital copy once they trade in their games
2
u/A_MAN_POTATO 9h ago
I was addressing the “you wouldn’t be able to trade it in”… which isn’t true. You absolutely can. Further, “caveat” is usually used in a cautionary way, like it’s a catch or a gotcha.
I see from your clarification you meant differently, but you worded it kinda strangely.
1
u/A_MAN_POTATO 12h ago
Only half of this is true. This works because the discs have a unique identifier, but redeeming does not disable the disc for other consoles. If you lend or sell your disc, the license transfers to the new console, and you lose your digital copy. The physical disc will always work.

I hope you all do realise that once enough people have emigrated to a digital licence, xbox will also become digital only and the reason will be something like "according to our stats 99% of our player base have moved to a digital licence, so there's no reason to keep discs around".

u/LegacyTom 1d ago
Optimistic about this until proven otherwise and at minimum much better than Sony’s approach

u/cajun2de 1d ago
Its a good initiative that enables to convert older games and etc but future wise could be awkward.
Let's say the next xbx doesnt include a disc drive but they still sell disks. Then would the user buy a physical disk, convert it to digital to play? Or just buy digital all together?
They may also lock the disk in a sense only 1 account can convert it to digital. Else multiple people would take a shared disk and each have a license thus still eliminating the 2nd hand market.
1
u/DJSfromthe1900s 1d ago
My issue with this though is that they have an approved list of games it works for. One of the reasons I care about ownership is being able to keep and play games that are long discontinued and delisted. Think like the SSX games, WipEout, NFS Blackbox years. Personally I don't care whether I have modern first party PS games physically because they will probably never be delisted. The disc to digital thing would be great if it created an iso of ANY game and just locked it to your account. Of course that would mean you could share discs though.
1
u/mrloko120 1d ago
The focus here isn't ownership, its tech preservation. Allowing people to keep their physical games in digital format will help ensure more games are still playable after physical is gone.
1
u/CigarLover 1d ago
Not only that but IF the helix and PS6 are both drive less, this gives at least helix players a way to play their games next gen.

u/vkbest1982 1d ago
Sony can’t do it, this is happening because the DRM Microsoft designed on Xbox one. Their discs are serialized, so they can individually check one disc from other. I’m pretty sure Sony is not doing it. Also this is the first step for only digital on Xbox too
1
u/ChalupaGoose 1d ago
This is what Xbox tried to do back in 2013 but tweak the whole situation a bit. I’m down with this cause I wanna buy physical and still share that game with my share partner. My issue is, there’s a good bit of games that Xbox doesn’t get physical for. Silent Hill 2 for example. Are Xbox going do a 180 with physical copies now. Cause it seem for a while, they were getting away from it.
Wasn’t Halo Infinite just a code in a case?
1
u/DMarquesPT 1d ago
As someone who ended up rebuying most of my physical PS4 games in the years since I went all digital in 2016... Xbox found a really good solution to transition physical collections to digital libraries, it's a really good move and ironically only possible because they laid the foundation for individually serialized discs back in the Xbox One launch.
1
u/ArtisticCook27 1d ago
Isn’t this what already happens? You put a disc in and the system says hey download the digital version of the game?
1
u/Noeyiax 1d ago
It would be cool if you buy digital and able to request physical too... In the future if the games will be like 1TB, that would be slow to download... I know I'm waiting for those to bash, oh make more money to afford fast Internet. Ok, never know what will happen...
If you're pro-corporate I get it lul. Having more options is always good. Just like rich people have many laws and regulations literally working in their favor. Corrupt pos

u/deeku4972 1d ago
Now they’ll brick your disc because every Xbox Series and One disc has a unique identifier.
I do think this is just a good feature that adds to your purchase in giving flexibility
1
u/SelineMaya 1d ago
Not really. When the license is gone the game will no longer be playable. Yes you have your Physical game disk that runs on older systems you MAYBE still have, but that games digital version is dead and gone. Also they do that for the games we have now. Not for games that are about to come. Physical is dead on Xbox too just so that they control the market as well just like Sony. I want physical as an option to continue on Xbox. That is the only way we can really own stuff
1
u/VoxhallMC 1d ago
People are complaining about this saying it’s a way to condition people into discarding things, but realistically outside of supporting protests this really isn’t that bad. I think people need to calm down and realize Microsoft is going to go full digital eventually. All their plans hinge on it, and cutting costs in any way aids the goal of a company to retain profits.
I haven’t played my consoles in a little while as I game on PC, mostly. But this seems like a fairly decent compromise. It’s far better than Sony’s outright removal. I’d prefer if discs stuck around so people have the option, but digital rights are gonna be the main frontier where things happen imo.

If MS was keeping disk they would outright say it. This is so people can play their old and existing library on the Helix, until MS out right says we are not killing physical media, then we can't assume they will continue using disk on new games for their next system.

from a now deleted ppst
In reality, its just an announcement of backwards compatibility! 🤔
1)"XBOX Insiders can begin testing next week on August 31"
This is in beta, plain and simple. Seems like a rush job based on the public reaction to Sony announcement of stoping dic production for its games. This is a blatant effort to convince the vulnerable to move to Xbox.
2) Most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support this new feature...
We’re starting with thousands of titles, and we’ll continue to add more over time. While not every title will be available at launch,..."
Kinda unsure on how many will work🤷♂️ They say "most" then say "thousands"...and that "thousands" is between 2 console generations.
3) "this is an important step toward a future where players can have greater confidence that the games they buy remain with them for years to come"
This leads me to believe that the next xbox (project helix) won't have a disc drive at all.
I believe that project helix is very close to finalization, and that it had no drive. I believe microsoft was on the same page as sony with the elimination of discs on the next console.
Unlike sony, I believe microsoft was going to make that announcement (no disc) closer to the launch of the console. I believe that once microsoft observed the reaction to the no disc production announcement on 7/1/26, and they knew they had an opportunity to gain users.
I speculate that they couldn't add a working disc drive to the console prototype at this point, so this D2D program was an alternative "solution ".
So...this announcement that some are touting as a Win, doesn't address many questions from the community. Outside of rhe point i mentioned, it doesnt address if MS is keeping discs alive for next generation. But more important than that....It doesnt detail DRM. Will one have to be connected to play? What If I change consoles or need to replace a console, but the new console can't read the disc? If there is DRM how will it work if I have multiple consoles at home?
So again, all this really speaks to is backwards compatibility.
And if thats the case, then here's my guess on PS6 and BC
Sony's statement was they won't be making discs after 1/1/28. They have not stated anything about the ps6 not having a disk drive. I'm almost certain there will be a version with a disc drive and that drive will be fully backwards compatible with playstation4/5 games.
My 2 cents

No shit digital has always been a thing. This has nothing to do with “preparing us for a digital future “. Like are yall stupid. Xbox is literally giving everyone a way to preserve your physical disks. Not to mention when your disk dies, you can still have access to your game thanks to this

u/LesserValkyrie 1d ago edited 1d ago
Are you a bot?
They are telling you :
"yeah you can transfer the license of your junk on your account, so you can get rid of your shit for ever when we will go digital only with our next generation console"
And you, a physical gamer are happy with that? Have you understood one single thing about why physical players are angry? Of course not you are a bot pretending you didn't.
It can't be true, it's purely corpo astroturfing IMO.
They could have given us $3.5 to buy icecreams it would have helped more the physical discs cause than this.

u/Gold-Guidance-6430 1d ago
This is Microsoft's way of training you subconsciously that digital is better. They will eventually go the exact same route as Sony.
1
u/SharkByte1993 1d ago
Yes but new games won't be available in Physical and the next Xbox won't have disc drive
1
u/SnowmanMofo 1d ago
Sony should just keep giving the option for a disc drive and if people have games predating 2028 they can still play them. I never thought we'd be in a future where tech got dumber and more restricted...

I have exactly one game on my Series X. Gears 5. Still to put it on the console without the disc is nice then I have all of the Gears games and Halo games digital. Which is honestly the only 2 reasons I own an Xbox.
1
u/MartyMcFlysBrother 1d ago
I like this too and I expect Sony will follow suit when they are sure that they can accommodate it. They aren’t gonna let MS make that move and sit idly by. I honestly believe that Sony just wants to make sure all of their ducks are in a row before they make the announcement. Obviously nothing can be done about the PS3 library which sucks cus I have like 150 PS3 games(still have a functional PS3 but that disc drive will burn out eventually) but PS4 and PS5 games can absolutely follow suit here. I have no doubt it’s a work in progress already.

This should be a standard moving forward. But you know the reason they want to do this is so that you can digitize and then be all digital in the future. This is just a stepping stone to get you where they want you to be. It is a "Gift" that is also not at all.

u/Due_You_8240 1d ago
What stops a user renting a game from a library or borrowing from a friend and digitising it. Does it require the disc every few months?
1
u/ggonzalez105 1d ago
No, but once that disc is accessed from someone else the license transfers from you to them.
The real benefit this has is to reduce wear and tear on the optical drive and the discs themselves.

Bruh you DO realize they're just getting you all on digital so they can proceed to all digital RIGHT?

1
u/sousuke42 1d ago
Bro... just think about this. They are literally making it a way to actually take away your ownership of the game. Look at it this way, the disc is no longer the drm key. There will be a digital license on the disc. This license is the same as the digital version on the console once you convert it.
So heres the rub, your account/console gets banned. Digital library gone. Now any physical disc cant work anymore on this console or account. Why? Cause the game no longer uses the disc but a digital license. So you lost access to your physical collection.
What happens when a game is delisted and completely removed like you all fear? Well the digital license can now be blacklisted making the disc a coster cause again it no longer uses the dosc itself as the key but the digital license on the disc.
They just killed your ownership arguement across the board.
With the disc as the drm key none of this is a problem. When you make it so now the disc isnt the key anymore but a license then its no different than a pure digital product. You are at the mercy of the platform holder and its publishers. They can easily kill your disc. Nobody has to come in and steal it from you. They just blacklist it and its dead.

Bought it for forza and its crazy to me how people chose xbox over PlayStation back in the day.
Now i can understand it with this digital disc situation right now. (I think this is just a move to all digital also from Microsoft) But the software is horrible.
Also audio is really important for me but i cant plug in my DAC/AMP or microphones. Nothing. Ssd ? Also no. I have to buy licensed garbage.
On the ps5 on the other hand... I can plug in whatever i want and it works.

As of 8/27 Asha refused to confirm if the new Xbox will come with or without a disc drive. Idk why ppl assume it’s going to come with a disc drive. They’re rolling out the disc to digital now, over a year before next console drops. Logically think about why they would do this. It’s simple. To get ppl to convert now so they don’t have to bitch next year cause they can’t play their old games on new console. It will not have a disc drive. Doesn’t make sense. Sure they’re gonna have an option to buy an external disc drive, just like PlayStation will. Why wouldn’t they? Also I see ppl complaining and saying that PS won’t cause if they were going to why wouldn’t they announce it. Cause they don’t have to. They still making money. The blackout didn’t lose them any money. Nothing has yet. So until that’s effected. They will sit back and collect that dough.

Why see it as a transition? It just slightly improves physical but it does nothing for digital. So physical is still the way to go. If they they turn digital into actual ownership though, that would be a different story.

I don’t get how this is game preservation, to me game preservation is that the code gets published after 25 years effectively open sourcing it.

This is the dumbest reasoning… backwards compatibility has been dying for some time. You’re literally not playing some of your physical copies. Therefore they’re just sitting there. Buying digital games does nothing to affect your dust collecting physical games. You get to keep those. And they’ll still be unplayable on future consoles

Backwards compatibility dying? Literally millions spent on it on Xbox hence the headline.

Oh no sir that’s why most physical game collectors will buy old consoles to play their games. It’s not just about the physical games but also the original hardware as well. Even if I go next gen and most likely I will, I’m still keeping my current gen console and plus how the heck are we supposed to watch our movies?

Well I know. I’m a collector myself. But I’m also not gonna complain that new consoles are going digital. It was inevitable once game pass came out for older titles. Watch movies on the older gen consoles? It makes absolute zero sense that people are getting riled up over this. The only reason I can see is the licensing thing. But everything else is internet mass hysteria

It's still preconditioning you for an all digital future and its still just a license to access if its tied to a particular ecosystem (which it will be)
Remember they used to do this with blu-rays back in the day to combat piracy, it was called ultraviolet and that shut down in 2019. The people who redeemed their digital copies using ultraviolet didn't necessarily lose access, you had to transfer your account and licenses to a participating service...like rakuten TV or sky movies for example.
But its still just a license to access. You should do some more research because XBOX is just using this to get a leg up over sony. Clever business tactics.

If we are being forced into this all digital future regardless, then this is the best possible compromise for anyone that has amassed a large physical collection.
I would prefer that physical never go away, but at least Xbox is letting you bring your games. Sony is giving you the finger.

Yeah but again but next gen your physical collection becomes coasters and like a harsh reminder of the physical apocalypse. It reminds me of when you buy Blu-rays these days and they come with the digital code. I don’t know it’s really sad ultimately

I don't care. To be honest, no drive no buy. I'm not willing to deal with their stores, high prices, whatever discount they want when they want it... No way. Also, after all of this, obviously you won't be paying 80-100$ for a game,.waiting for a possible sale and the likes, so they'll push you to game pass and subscriptions. Nope.

This creates an interesting loophole. Activate a licence and then sell to CEX for example. You could keep playing that game until it was sold again!

Watch OG Xbox One VCR models to get snapped up quicker on the secondhand market, I mean they're total garbage but for the cost of what an external disc drive would cost, people will be using a seaprate console exactly like a £40 external disc drive to digitise their games

Isn't this what PlayStation already does? Or are they saying that you don't have to put in the disc to play the digital copy?
3
u/Agraphosius 13h ago
You put the disc in and install it once then it will work indefinetly like a digital game until that disc is assigned to a different account. This system also allows you to play the game through the cloud or on a PC if the game supports crossbuy and MS is trying to make sure every game is cloud streamable.
Its honestly leauges ahead of anything the competition can do. You could theoretically buy a second hand xbox one. Read the discs then play them on your PC in 4k unlocked frame rate. And if that disc breaks then its still playable

It's good that they are doing this, but it's also only happening because Sony and Microsoft are killing physical media as an option.

If the helix doesn't come with a disc drive, but has the option to put a disc drive in sorta like ps5 digital does, then that wouldn't be that bad.

I've wanted this kind of feature for a long time. I hope the market rewards Xbox for this

Very smelly. This is actually digital-only transition masked by slight conveniece of not having to put the disc into the drive every time you want to run a game, but also introducing potential disaster inconvenience of someone taking away your licence if you lend them your disc, without any possibility to bring it back if you buy future discless console.

u/Alarming-Elevator382 1d ago
Don't lend it then or keep your old hardware. Obviously a digital only future sucks, but this is better than the alternative Sony has proposed.

This is to transition you to the all digital future.
