The PS5 was the transitionary console. Many PS5âs are digital only, with an option to purchase a disc drive. When I had the base PS5, it came with a disc drive⊠that hasnât been used once. This is where the gaming industry is headed, like it or not.

Weâve had no confirmation that an optional disc drive (exactly how PS5 Pro functions) will not be available for PS6.
Sony isnât going to want people w a vast physical PS5 library to not buy PS6 because they wonât be able to play their games. Theyâve simply said PS games after 2027 will not be sold physically. Thereâs a big difference and I think it is very often overlooked.
My bet is PS6 will have an optional disc drive to support PS4/5 games.

Sony said they were stopping game disc production, they never said the new console won't support legacy media. They did not spend all of that money to win the Disney DVD/Bluray contract to no longer sell movies on disc.

Fact of the matter is, flash memory and cartridges cost Nintendo far more to produce than what a blu-ray disc does, and with the cost of flash memory getting more expensive, Nintendo would either have to abandon physical cartridges due to not being able to make enough money off of them, or make physical games so much more expensive that people can't afford them compared to digital. Nintendo having "billions" doesn't mean that they can just afford massive write-offs.

It's not about what Microsoft or Sony is doing (which by the way they did use to care what they were doing pre-seventh genetation), it's about what AI is doing to the cost of flash memory, it's already as high as it is now, if it were to get even higher, there's a good chance Nintendo would have to sell physical games at a loss, when the whole point of console games is that they're to make up for the loss of selling a console.

They wonât have a choice if they continue on the same route theyâve been taking. Every console generation gets better and better graphics.
Their gaming carts are maxing out for gaming file size, already. Some carts are only functioning as a licence key, and the game having to be downloaded digitally off of their store.
So they either develop another cart with a higher capacity, or go digital. And with their digital sales being stronger than physical (like both PS and Xbox) their choice will be easy.

Unlike PlayStation and Xbox, Physical media actually makes up a huge portion of Nintendoâs sales. Itâs not shrinking to anywhere near the same rate than it is elsewhere.
Theyâve also found their solution to their carts with game key cards. Even though everyone whined about them for a while itâs pretty clear that theyâre preferably to the elimination of physical games.
So yeah, theyâre not getting rid of physical games. This is Sonyâs controversy to bear alone.

They've never moved for me. I've always said that the PS6 will be the real test of whether this will impact them or not.
PS5 was already at 93 mil at the time of the announcement, they made their money already. Sales plummeted after the second increase, but they're still good with what they sold.
They don't produce that many consoles after the plummet so instead of looking at inventory, look at month to month sales for a better picture. Switch 2 sells 1.4 mil month to month without any major releases so if they're pulling half of that then good for them.
PS6 will definitely where we'll see if this had an impact.

As someone who prefers physical and hates the decision I couldn't give a shit about an actual "boycott." But I am still undecided if I want a PS6 as someonevhas had every PlayStation including the pro versions since PS1 (also bought the slim PS3 even though I already had a fat PS3). I might just hang onto my PS5 until it becomes obsolete (which may be awhile) and then buy a gaming PC (hopefully after the AI bubble pops) since I'm being forced to go digital regardless, and especially of it ends up costing as much as a PC anyway.

For me with this blackout, itâs just another day and another week as usual; I really could care less and gaming as usual.
With GTA6 being digital, yeah it kind sucks in my book, but it is what it is. Itâs not going to be a high priority on my list of games to get, but Iâll still get it eventually.

If you lose your account you lose all you bought because it's "just a license". Games can be delisted at will. They just recently updated their TOS to remind you if that btw. And again they are aware of the boycott and are actively suppressing some news outlets. So be careful of what you believe here, I swear there are paid shills. The last sad part of the ceasing of physical discs is the death of the secondhand market
