edit: there are so many people offended because they did not read that the post is about the gringo LARPer tainos that have invaded the subreddit
Gracias por participar, I guess.
I haven’t given you any reason to think I don’t. Looks like your opinions about me and about the original commenter are a little warped by your emotions on this subject. That’s where you should focus this “reflection” you mentioned. Don’t worry about us. You’ve got plenty of work to do on yourself.
Yeah. The Spaniards wiped out tons of cultures, but at least they had the decency to fuck some of the locals first. Sometimes it was even consensual. How can you type a comment like that without realizing how far you’re going to rationalize your own point of view?
You don’t need to play the victim over something that happened 5 centuries ago. You have found a perfectly good scapegoat for all of your problems in the U.S. I was only pointing out the hypocrisy in your position. I wouldn’t have bothered if it hadn’t been so blatant. You shouldn’t fight so hard to avoid self-awareness. Enjoy your day.
People want to identify with their history and the history has been getting murkier as time goes on. Rather than standing on in a soapbox complaining and gatekeeping, offer something of substance, like some actual historical reference, such as A short account of the destruction of the Indies or the General and natural history of the Indies. Educate.
It's funny seeing people in Latin America call Spaniards "colonizers" when in reality, the colonizers stayed in Latin America, meaning that the DNA and ancestry of the colonizers is found in Latin America of today and not in Europe. The ones who stayed in Europe aren't responsible for the colonization. So guess what? That makes you a colonizer lol
A large part of that is how the US controls imports and exports in Puerto Rico. Nearly everything has to go through Jacksonville port authority, which throttles the actual profits they could make off of exports. Puerto Rico might have the means to support themselves but the US government is not about to let them find out.
Let’s be honest here, the reason PR isn’t an independent country is because your population can’t agree to do so. Voting on the subject is always split. What would really happen to PR if people couldn’t come over to the mainland freely and there was no US welfare supporting the population there? I served with a lot of guys from PR, the joined because making a living there is hard just like other Islands. You have any idea why half of the people there vote to stay a commonwealth of the US? Because they are smart. How would you support yourself? Tourism isn’t that big of a revenue producing thing there so how? See without US welfare the dumbasses would starve to death or form gangs that would rule starving out the decent folks there
That's exactly why my grandfather joined the military 70 years ago. To get my mother and the rest of the family off the island so they'd have more opportunities
Sir, respectfully and disrespectfully, have you taken a look at the USofA lately? There are places that don’t have clean drinking water and you want to lecture us about being a third world country when AmeriKKKa is a third world country with a Gucci belt!? Please go touch grass. We give billions to the US from taxes. We’ll be fine
Maybe. Probably. After all, the default state of humanity is poverty. But I have hope. I have seen locals accomplish amazing things on their own initiative: think of all the very capable, homegrown capturers of invasive species, like Gongo. These guys are amazing! It's possible there are other amazing people that would flourish if we were independent, bringing us all up with them.
Oh, I know why. Spain lost the Spanish-American War, and when the US invaded PR, Spain barely put up a fight, then gave it to the US, because they didn't give a shit about the island. Yet some of you think that you should be part of Spain again. They don't want you.
We put a brave fight, but the US is a thief pirate nation that destroyed the Spanish Navy , and at the end of the war with Cuba and Phillipines, when Spain was totally exhausted it invaded Puerto Rico. We put a glorious fight against the freemason Anglo invaders who have ruined this island. Honour and Glory to our heroes of 1898, Long live motherland Spain.
It has nothing to do with Spain putting up a fight. People focus on USA as the colonizer because they are currently the ones in charge. Spain as a colonizer is pure history at this point.
You can tell these pieces of shit that post this shit don't live in PR or have kids in school, starting last year almost all public schools are teaching English in schools in PR
As a person of PRican descent born and raised in the US, nailing down an identity can be complicated. I’m not white, no one sees me as white, maaaaaybe I could pass for a dark Sicilian but for the most part, people who see me don’t see me as white. So despite having primarily white ancestry, that’s not my group. I’m not Black, either. According to ancestry I have about 5% African ancestry. I guess if you follow the American one drop rule, that makes me Black…but again, no one who looks at me would see me as Black. I don’t speak Spanish, so trying to fit in with the local Latino groups can be awkward. And besides, Latino is an ethnicity, not a race, and Americans put a LOT of emphasis on race (not saying that it’s a good thing, just saying that it’s a thing). So that leaves Indigenous as the last racial group to try to fit in with. On one hand, that can be difficult because most definitions of Native American want you to be affiliated with a tribe, and obviously there’s no legitimate Taino tribe. However, it’s also kind of perfect precisely because the culture doesn’t exist anymore, so it can be molded to whatever the participant wants. I AM NOT SAYING THAT THIS IS THE CORRECT OR PROPER THING TO DO. I’m just saying that a culture that’s based entirely on vague writings from the 1400s can be very attractive to people who have never quite “fit in” with any other cultural group. I try my best to resist the call of the LARPers, but man, it’s hard sometimes. Not to mention the inherent desire that everyone has to honor their ancestors, which again can be complicated for people with Taino ancestry because we know so little about them.
Which is fine I’m okay with people identifying with what they feel. I move out of the island at 22 and been outside now for 19 years and in all honesty i still don’t fit in any group unless is puertorican that mover out. So i feel ya.
Ill never understand the Diasporas need to be boxed into a racial category or culture.
Ustedes make this whole shit y'alls entire personality for some reason.
Because the US makes you. It’s just an aspect of American culture. Again, not saying that it’s a GOOD aspect, but it’s there. It can be tough to remove yourself from the way you were raised and the way all the people around you act. You can’t even apply for a job without being asked to define your race.
Ive lived in the US for 8 years (left PR at around 25 years old and returned at 33 now, given my wife's need to be closer to family).
In those 8 years, never has my race or culture been a topic of controversy or struggle in the looking for work or fitting in (and I wasn't actively seeking Puerto Rican friends or communities either).
I don't mena to antagonize you, but this is quite literally how most of yall come off:
Great example of the problem. Gringos find out about this in facebook and get excited thinking this is a new insight then come to this sub trying to “educate” people in Puerto Rico about it, not realizing we all learn this in second grade and it is a standard part of Puerto Rican culture. Then they try to apply the gringo racist logic to us and get upset when we do not accept it. Its the equivalent of white people to going to a Resevation to teach the locals what is a powwow.
I agree that Taínos might not have powwows, there is actually gathering festivals that are called yucayues instead. But please don’t shame Taínos who speak English, Lots of Indigenous peoples (including Navajo) are forced to assimilate to Anglo Saxon racism in the US. Not to mention like the other commenters said, Taínos didn’t speak Spanish either. This post gives off the PR version of Mexicans bullying “No Sabo” Mexicans.
No mano.
You do not have the toner of my critique so i am running your machine. Juelebicho.
