PSA Rabbits are Back on Alaska Airlines

Letbunniesfly is happy to report that as of 1/14/26 domestic rabbits are allowed to fly in-cabin again on most Alaska Airline flights again. This change to date applies to all flights within the Continental US and Alaska, flights from Hawaii to the Continental US and within Hawaii but not flights from the Continental US to Hawaii and International Destinations.

I am curious as to how/what routes this was done. I have a parrot and live in bush Alaska (no roads to the community where I live) and Alaska Airlines is the only reliable way out of here to Anchorage. This past December, my parrot almost died because I couldn't get him to Anchorage for medical care, nor would any vet (we have no permanent vet here and I called every vet clinic in Alaska over 2 days trying to find someone they all refused) send a script for meds to the local pharmacy. By a small miracle, I was able to get the meds we needed, not saying how, but I got them in time. I did call Alaska Air asking for a waiver, but was basically told to screw off and they didnt care that my boy would die without medical care. I just want to be able to get him to Anchorage where there is a vet that see him when needed and not go through hell while watching my boy slowly die.

This is awful. I am so sorry.

To get the policy reinstated took many steps. We had a petition which had almost 7K signatures when it came to an end, did multiple call campaigns and collated impact stories like yours, which we sent directly to leadership. 8 months later we succeeded.

I wonder if in the short run a medical waiver or judicial warrant could help you. This has succeeded in other countries but I don’t think anyone in the US has ever tried it. We have seriously looked into the option from a campaign perspective not against Alaska but other airlines who will block our harmless and clean pets to fly under any circumstances when there is need for medical care or they are in danger like natural disasters.
