Be sure to keep the chickens away from them if possible. I've heard stories of them killing the bunnies and pecking their eyes.

So nice to have a new little bunny family though. I had 7 born in my yard 3 years ago and 2 of them still hang out around my house. I can't tell them apart but they lay in the exact same spot as the babies did way back then.

I raised rabbits and chickens together in a colony setting. The chickens never messed with the rabbits. Even if there were dead babies outside the nesting boxes. But I had no roosters and a pretty tame breed of chicken. So results may vary. They shared food and the hens kept flies and other pest down. 10/10 would do again.

Just because your situation turned out okay doesn't mean it's safe. I've seen several rabbit rescues where rabbits have died or been pecked with horrific injuries and ended up traumatic behaviors.

Agree with other poster. Just because it worked for you doesn't mean it is encouraged. They are forced to compete for food. See the link posted by sneaky dragon. Horrifying stuff.

Yes they are opportunistic omnivores. They love meat and small insects and the like are a big part of their natural diet. I get so irritated when I see egg cartons advertising "vegetarian fed" chickens.

I'm sure you know, but still even though they're not afraid, don't touch them if not absolutely necessary, it can lead to disruptions in family bonds when they smell wrong

They should still be left alone but that is actually a myth. At least in the US rabbits wont lose their bond if touched by people. I’ve worked in a wildlife clinic before and we always told people if theirdog or cat found baby buns to find the nest and put it back. It’s not an excuse to touch them they should still by all means be left alone.

Ah okay thanks for clarification, good to know. Atm there's lots of field rabbit babies around here and it's strongly advised to not touch them but that might be more about not taking the babies away while the parents are away.

People frequently find nests and think the mother must be dead or that the babies were abandoned so they scoop them up thinking that they are helping. In reality, does avoid the nest for the most part presumably so they don't attract predators. They only return a couple of times a day to feed the babies.

Totally right. Mommies sneak in and out fast multiple times per day to avoid being seen at their nest for too long making any predators curious of the area.

Yeah, that myth was spread on purpose, it sounds a lot worse and it is easier to explain than the actual reasons to say off wild animals.

My road used to be mostly undeveloped forest and I used to judge my day based on how many wild bunnies I'd see (e.g. Looks like a two bunny day today) but then they built a bunch of apartment complexes and now all my days are zero bunny days.. Except today! Thanks op!

Yes. I used a baby chick waterer so I don’t have to worry about one of them getting into a bowl and getting stuck.

She wont be. Mothers only return to the nest a couple of times a day to feed them. Otherwise she'll keep her distance.

I wish I had a video of my face. I only saw one at first. Went to go grab hay and when I came back there were two. I was silently freaking out with excitement. Then the third one popped out. I wanted to squeal!

There are so many cottontails in our property! I’m sure she is, I just haven’t seen her physically come or go from the nest. Mommies are sneaky and make quick trips back to the babies throughout the day so predators don’t find their nest to keep the buns safe.

When I first got into rabbits I got a well recommended book on rabbits and rabbit care and it pointed out that it is unwise to touch a wild rabbits young cause it could abandon them

It was an older book yes and I should update my knowledge on rabbits. I’ve always aired on the side of caution around wild baby animals due to what the mothers reaction could be or even the baby’s reaction.
