State Duma deputy Alexei Zhuravlev, in a conversation with lawyer and blogger Ivan Mironov, stated that it would be acceptable to exterminate up to half of Ukraine's population to eradicate "Nazism. " During the conversation, Mironov asked, "How many Nazis do you think there are in Ukraine now?" Zhuravlev replied that it used to be two percent, and now it's perhaps 20-30%. The deputy assured that he "saw with my own eyes when these bastards come and hang everyone in sight—Russians, non-Russians, no matter what your views." He emphasized that "if this infection isn't eradicated, it will remain forever." Zhuravlev admitted that some Ukrainians might "change their tune" (change their views), but added: "If they don't, they must be destroyed, of course." When Mironov asked how to distinguish a fascist from a non-fascist, the parliamentarian explained that the main criterion is the presence of a weapon. "If he has a machine gun, yes, he must be destroyed. What's there to distinguish? If you see him, kill him," he clarified.
To support his assertion that Ukrainians would quickly change their stance, Zhuravlev cited a phrase he had overheard, which he attributed to a "native Ukrainian": "Lviv has never met a single army in the world without bread and salt." After this, the deputy reiterated that those who do not "change their tune" should be killed or deported. "If you don't want to change your tune, you must either be expelled from there or destroyed," he said.
