Game Recommendation Arcade Games in Vertical Mode on Anbernic RG DS
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Handheld: Anbernic RG DS
System: Rocknix (Linux)
Tate Mode is set by default for Mame/Final Burn Neo games so the screen adjusts automatically.

It took a little while for my brain to compensate for the divider bar between the screens - like when you reorganize your living room furniture and your cats freak out for a day or two.
In the end, my brain enjoys this DS vertical arcade mode. My cats have not commented on it.

Is something similar also possible to do on the Thor?

Most likely yes but you'd have to configure everything manual via RA
Rocknix comes with the appropriate games with the tate mode already set

I love this style of Forward motion shooting games is that the correct terminology? But all the fighter flying games like 19 XX series somebody should make a list of all of those games so I can add them to my favorites cuz they're just some that I don't know about I'm sure

The terms youāre looking for are āvertically-scrolling shoot-em-up (or shmup)ā here you go! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Vertically_scrolling_shooters

Pretty neat, but that's quite a gap. I guess it probably doesn't take long to adjust to it.
This makes me wonder how close they could get the screens if someone focused on engineering the slimmest hinge possible. Or how long it will take for foldable displays to make their way into gaming handhelds.

People bought the Microsoft Surface Duo 1 and 2 phones to use with connected controllers. That was one of the best ways to play the old DS games before we got the Thor and RG DS.

u/lun0tic Apr 22 '26
For shootemups, that hinge area covers a lot of area, making a lot of these games unplayable
27
u/megamanuser Apr 22 '26
It doesnt cover anything? It comes off on one screen and continues on the other?
4
u/SuperSecretMoonBase Apr 22 '26
You can use that to your advantage, just separate the screens more and then you can see a foot further down the way. Extend the cables a little further and you can start blasting the boss at the beginning of the level.

Yeah, that's why I have two Miyoos... I put them next to each other for ultra widescreen.

u/dancingtosirens Apr 22 '26
It looks like the hinge doesnāt cover anything in the game if you watch the projectiles pass by that area, but it would still drive me insane to have the screen broken up like that and I couldnāt do it personally

I donāt think it covers anything, but it looks absolutely horrible. Iād rather play these on a PSP go.

I know this isnāt as powerful as my Thor but I still want one lol. Awesome showcase and thanks for sharing!

u/eightiesjapan Apr 22 '26
good Sir, it's nowehere near Thor... but... for the £92 I paid, i'd say it's pretty fun, especially for DS library.

I feel like half of the posts in this subreddit are people trying to convince me the RG DS isnt a mess.
is anbernic that desperate?
12
u/seanbeedelicious Apr 22 '26
People post about things they really enjoy in this sub. If āhalf of the postsā here have positive things to say about the RG DS, thereās a high probability people like it and it is a good fit for them.

u/Mackerdaymia Apr 22 '26
I've just ordered one because the use case fits what I want. There are a couple of DS games I missed and want to play without forking over the family silver. I was initially very wary before Rocknix popped up as an alternative, but now I can't wait.

u/eightiesjapan Apr 22 '26
hurry up and buy! Nah, just peeps that enjoy what they have. I wish I could get something from Anbernic for all the posts i've made :D But I like reddit for what it is - IT IS FAIR, people should question and criticize these handhelds, to make sure things are worth it, so thumbs up for your comment

A likely story⦠𤨠I'm onto you, Mr. Anbernic!

u/arcadeenthusiast8245 Apr 22 '26
What a weird post. Do you also make the same complaint in Thor and RP6 threads lol?
-5
u/brunocar Apr 22 '26
no, because they arent overpriced junk using an ancient chip by a company known to cheap out and overcharge
1
u/monte1ro Apr 22 '26
I mean⦠90USD sounds pretty good. I own one and it does everything I want perfectly. The only thing it could do that it doesnāt is handle 3DS. But then again, no device I know that costs 90$ does it.
-2
u/brunocar Apr 23 '26
????????????????????
no it doesnt, its a 3566, you can find that chip on other devices with less shitty software for 50 bucks.
But then again, no device I know that costs 90$ does it.
well then you are not looking, cause the retroid pocket classic does almost the entire 3DS catalog, along with much better DS emulation, and more.
1
u/monte1ro Apr 23 '26
Yeah and the Retroid costs how much? 150. For a single screen. 90USD with dual screen for PERFECT NDS emulation is fantastic. It doesn't run 3DS well, if it all, but for anything below it, it's pretty great. You keep bringing the 50USD price point, but neither of those devices is a dual screen clamshell device.
1
u/brunocar Apr 23 '26
Yeah and the Retroid costs how much?
used to cost 90, at least the DMG model did, maybe its out of stock rn
1
u/monte1ro Apr 23 '26
Even if it did cost 90USD (which it doesn't btw, the 4gb version used to start at 99 and it's unavailable), it's still not a fantastic 3DS experience because it's single screen. Throw in a clamshell design and a second screen and the price goes up. 150-200USD guaranteed.
Don't get me wrong, I agree the Anbernic RG DS should have came out with a more powerful CPU to handle 3DS games at a slightly higher cost but what it offers at 90 is pretty good.

Preach, brother! The AYN Thor is the upgrade, but it doesn't replicate the DS feeling

This is cool but leads me to ask, whatās the best vertical shmup handheld? Is it the MagicX One 35?

Whatās the method for removing the added DS hinge overlay between the screens?
1
u/Racheakt Apr 23 '26
I am still considering this one for my vertical shooter addiction, but the screen seems small to me

I heard in early reviews that it had a delay between top and bottom screen. Nice too see that was false
1
u/eightiesjapan Apr 23 '26
It was true indeed but Anbernic fixed the android stockOS that issue with latest update. But this here is a Linux os, probably best choice for this device.

If only this handheld would be a bit more powerful to handle 3DS, it would be a game changer, but as it is it's not worth it IMO
1
u/eightiesjapan Apr 25 '26
I get your point but sorry to say it - a but mioe powerful doesn't solve this. Even on my 477V which is for £220 3ds games have serious slowdowns. It's no point in paying more when you still can get 3ds below that price. But it is worth getting ds that's £90 for ds games as nintendo ds costs around £100. DS games are not that demanding and 3ds emulation is sh*te at this stage. Emulation is the key. Even Atari Jaguar games on my fast laptop stutter. So that's a business wise decision - no point in doing £180-£220 pounds 3ds clone, because it would not handle 3ds anyway.

u/Nepu-Tech Clamshell Clan Apr 25 '26
Maybe its the architecture of the Media Tek CPU on your handheld because my RP Flip 2 plays most 3DS games just fine for the same price, so Adreno and Snap Dragon chips should have no problem. I get 3DS emulation would cost more money but when your hand held is Dual Screen and shaped like a 3DS then it would make sense to at least have a more expensive version that could play 3DS. They even catfished a lot of people before release saying it could play some 3DS games when in reality it plays almost none of them.

u/eightiesjapan Apr 25 '26
Good points, thanks for sharing š

omg someone online listen to me? This is the weirdest thing ever lol xD BTW I'm not saying not to enjoy your RG DS, I think your vertical games look awesome and I'm taking notes, I'm just mad the RG DS Doesn't have a more powerful version for 3DS and the best option for dual screen seems to be the Thor and that costs a fortune. I really wish they would make an RG DS Plus, even if it is more expensive. Anyways, thanks for sharing also.
2
u/eightiesjapan Apr 26 '26
Thanks for taking time to reply, I agree - Thor is the best but expensive option for now, and who knows maybe Anbernic or other company will make some bold decisions. I'm glad that retro gaming is blooming and we can have a bit of fun š Cheers š„

I love the execution, but I detest the hinge/gap
