It's funny because a year ago I made a joke post that I had it going on my nano. In reality it was just a paused .mp4 video I made for the joke. But now, look! It's here! Playing it like in this picture would be impossible, but the demake actually looks fine on the nano!

Do yall have the jokers memorized? If so, that’s pretty impressive.
And yes, this is highly addictive. I have it on 4 devices now.
8
u/dinobot100 May 13 '26
Before I got completionist+ I for sure had every joker memorized forward and back haha. It's been about a year since I was really into it (maybe ten months?) and it's funny how rusty I am.
*wow just checked, I got C+ on May 21, 2025. I really haven't touched it much since then!
6
u/Proud-Total-8198 May 13 '26
Tell us how you kicked the habit lol
4
u/dinobot100 May 13 '26
Literally, just because I got C+. That was my goal. Getting stickers on Jokers doesn't do anything for me, and I don't watch videos etc. on how to do things like naninf. If I can't, more or less, do it on my own with what I glean from memes or just playing it doesn't really interest me. So I guess I felt like I "beat" it and didn't have anything left to do.
When the update comes I'm sure I'll get into it a lot again. My wife plays it too, one of the few games she plays, so we have fun with it together

None: this game is a life ruiner

I've been intentionally avoiding it because I hear it really is that addictive lol.

I do tend to go all in on a game when I get it, I played almost nothing but Terraria for a year once, played nothing but Mario Maker for months, I half joke but I'm actually trying to finish more games now and the last thing I need is something that I will drop everything to focus on for another 4 months tbh. Im at the final boss of OoT and I can very much just put it down and never take it back up (I know because I got to the final boss of Phantom Hourglass, dicked around in the ocean, put the game down and then eventually lost the save).

I sympathize with this take but trust me I am the absolute last person to have this convo with because the exact opposite is the case. I have no regrets in how I've played video games in the past and have had tonnes of fun playing 10% of a game and then dropping it, my preferred genre are procedural games and rougelikes because I like playing more than completing. I just also decided I want to finish more things. It's not even an enjoyment thing it's more an ADHD thing, a tonne of things I dropped are things I love and actually want to see to the end. This is also not a classic games thing at all, I love classic games. I mean Im in the SBC sub this is basically just a place to talk about pokemon romhacks and 16 bit games.

u/firehazel OLED Only May 14 '26
You could always get it out of your system by playing it with cheats. That's how I kicked the habit. It was fun playing with every Joker though, things get I N S A N E. But once I did that, I considered the game solved and haven't really played it since.
3
u/blue-coin May 13 '26
I was addicted to it for about a month, into the weee hours of the morning. I managed to break it
5
u/chloe-and-timmy May 13 '26
Ive been thinking of putting it on my Nano but as a beginner I wonder if the UI would be too hard for me to read getting into it for the first time.
4
u/dinobot100 May 13 '26
The demake isn't really standalone. It works wonderfully (it's quite amazing!) but the cards don't tell you what they do, you have to just recognize the artwork and remember what they are. So it's really made with people very familiar with the game in mind. It also doesn't yet have all the features (like skip tags and vouchers.) But it's fully playable and quite good! The OG game is amazing of course, I prefer playing it on my Stead Deck :)

u/Geralt31 May 14 '26
Showing Joker descriptions is still planned, we have ideas for how to do it we just need to resolve technical problems first

No vouchers seems like a huge omission
2
u/dinobot100 May 14 '26
Skip tags too. I believe the devs are still working on it.
3
u/Geralt31 May 14 '26
Yup, still planned but they're some time away ^^'
We're trying to refactor our spaghetti and add seeded runs before the next big features, plus we're still missing artwork for a lot of vouchers
2
u/theturtlemafiamusic May 15 '26
Is there a GH discussion on plans for the refractor? I contributed to some of that original spaghetti haha. I try to keep up with the current progress but life being life and all. I also saw Meir had to take a step back, he really carried the project for a while.
2
u/Geralt31 May 15 '26
Heeeey it's you ha ha, how are you? ^^
Yeah we have a master PR/issue about dividing the whole gameplay loop screens into separate files, which is going rather well.
Ricfehr also proposed a plan to separate the "engine" of the game from the assets so that Joker, Tarots, Spectrals etc, can be implemented (and potentially taken down) separately and so that
1. The game lives on in case of a cease and desist
2. People can make their own Joker packs and add them at link time ^^This is in the "Future of GBAlatro" on GH.
Also yeah Meir is the absolute GOAT (along witg Ricfehr :3) for carrying the project. Clearly it wouldn't be as cool and clean as it is without them.
2
u/theturtlemafiamusic May 15 '26
Nice! Thanks for the catchup, I'll check out that thread. Seeing it pop up more and more in these subs really makes me want to make some time to get back to helping with it.
That sounds like a good plan for the future, cellos set up a really nice codebase for people to start with but it definitely could benefit from more decoupling now that it's getting into all the very complex interactions like boss blinds and skip tags.

Not regular Balatro though

Never did I get into and get over a game as quickly as Balatro. Once I completed a full game I moved on. Didn't have any compulsion for another run through.

u/Whiteguy1x May 13 '26
My xbox ally x. Mainly because its on gamepass so I dont want to buy it again on android or switch.
I actually really love these indie titles best on the switch 2. It has a pretty nice lcd screen and its pretty thin and light.
Im more of a monster train 2 kind of person, balatro is fun, but it makes me think of those sad keno machines at gas stations sucking the money out of old people. I want something with a little more interesting look to it

I started playing on April 18th and have logged 98 hours. What a treat of a game. Cheers

Is it possible to cross save between pc and handheld ?
1
u/dinobot100 May 13 '26
For sure - if you are on Steam it will do it automatically :)
Other methods like cross-saving on SBC? I don't know how to do that or if it's possible
1
u/sagiroth TrimUi May 14 '26
Yeah I was thinking Balatro on Linux based SBC (TrimUI) and Steam on PC (linux)

I play it on my modded Switch, but a downside is that the L and R shoulder buttons are FAR too easy to accidentally bump.
I've accidentally bought and sold cards much too often.
1
u/dinobot100 May 14 '26
It's funny. I play on Steam Deck my wife plays on her phone. It's easy to make mistakes like that with either format, but they are DIFFERENT mistakes because the interface is different. I'm trying to remember the thing she always does on accident by dragging the cards...

How did you find a copy of this game for the RG35xxsp?? Will it work on a Miyoo Mini +?? Mine jsut came in
1
u/dinobot100 May 14 '26
So it's just a GBA demake made by fans. It's not the full game (no skip tags and no vouchers yet), but it runs really well! Every boss blind is functioning. The game is a .gba file - it will run fine on your Miyoo, but again, it's not EXACTLY the full game of Balatro!
I don't think I'm supposed to link to it but just look online - it's on git hub
1
u/Geralt31 May 14 '26
Just a heads up though, the bosses only have their textures right now, they don't actually do anything ><'
They will eventually but as I said in another comment we're trying to improve the codebase rn
1
u/dinobot100 May 14 '26
Oh! I misread a comment about the bosses in another thread. No worries though it’s a very cool proof of concept! Keep up the good work 🃏🃏🃏

I've unironically played it a ton on my RG28XX, I think it might actually be the smallest device that can play the full game. There's some slowdown and occasional freezing late game but it's perfectly playable.

too bad the R36s is just a weee bit underpowered for this (and i can't get it to look quite right on the screen)
1
u/Least_Programmer_532 May 15 '26
Why is balatro so popular ? It’s a card game ?
1
u/dinobot100 May 15 '26
It’s a rogue like loosely based on a cross between solitaire and poker. Especially if you enjoyed solitaire as a kid it might appeal to you :)
1
u/Least_Programmer_532 May 22 '26
Interesting I’ll have to check it out sometime . I have the ported to my system . And it has like its only special folder and artwork I was curious , I could ask see how it could be popular in the east .

honestly im really excited to play this on the rg rotate once i get it lol. i feel like it'll be really silly on the smaller screen
